Unless you can show either experience or level of interest ( hobby ) that effectively produces a portfolio, you can't ( sans pre-existing connections -- but then you wouldn't be posting on HN ). And that is the point other people in this thread made.
Re:OccupySaaS on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:24AM (#50338089)
So your argument is to do nothing or you saying doing this amounts to nothing?
Re:Ask HN: What hardware are you using to run local LLMs? on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:54AM (#50337643)
I grabbed a minisforum before they got prohibitively expensive ( and before that a framework variant, but I got a dud from them ). If you can't do that you can estimate what you can run model wise and play with LMS ( some interesting options are now available -- in my recent tests GLM and Qwen are doing well for local stuff. )

Note.. you can always try to pool things ( not memory, that is super hard; devices as there are more small models now that you can squeeze onto things ).

<< We need to take a look at all the factors affecting health, not just the ones that aren't ideologically inconvenient.

Oh, I understand, but I also openly wonder if you would argue the same way if said ideologically inconvenient considerations found their way to your 'side' of the argument?

Because then someone you consider politically opposed could theoretically define what sick means. I would invite you to think on this before you answer.

I am just a guy, but there are people who read HN and you may just give them an idea.

Re:OccupySaaS on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:25AM (#50337242)
How about instead you try to tell me why you think you are right. I know what I think already and you know my objection ( it is an incomplete solution: it is not an either or choice ).

<< I don't believe it's able to hurt capital at all, no matter how many vibecoded replacements they make.

Maybe, convince me.

No worries. And it is a fair reason. I was merely curious. That said, it is now the best and worst time to try ( and you won't know which until you do ).
I know what he said:D What I was trying to subtly get at is that tooling and knowledge is available, so why does he need organizational support? I am not asking willy nilly.
Re:OccupySaaS on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:11AM (#50337048)
I think I agree. Protest is a protest is a protest. I suspect that people have this idea of what a protest should be as opposed to what it is supposed to accomplish. Depending on which SAAS projects are targetted, it may well work well enough.
The real question is what exactly is stopping you right now?
No. What they are trying to do is to create a medical solution to a political problem. But thanks for playing.
Re:OccupySaaS on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:53AM (#50336813)
Oh man, you assume all weak points are the same and work the same way. You are not exactly wrong, because the proposed approach is incomplete, but you are not exactly helping saying this.
<< The manosphere, a diffuse commercial ecosystem and loose collection of online communities united by shared beliefs about masculinity, misogyny, and male victimisation, is an under-recognised determinant of health harms. This network has been implicated in considerable health harms: widespread mental health impacts, especially in young people; violence against women, girls, and gender minorities; and delegitimising help-seeking in boys and men. In this Viewpoint, we argue that the manosphere is best understood and addressed as a public health problem.

I think we can now safely say Lancet is not a serious organization. It is not often I see such blatant political takes pretending to be a health consideration.

I will respond, because I think I have a leg in both worlds.

It is a little scary as it will likely drown new releases on steam/itch ( I think it already has ). Otoh, good stuff is still good stuff and now there is little to no excuse to not look for something better if what you find fails.

My personal major project for 2027 as a result is proper 'tagging' system that can withstand typical human tendencies and interference. Tall order, but I can already see it will be needed.

I am optimistic, because even if the above fails, I can just keep adding fun little tools for myself and they are exactly what I want them to be without having to align myself to somebody else's idea of what useful is.

If anything, it adds meaning -- but there is a trade-off.

Re:Anthropic Bans Reverse Engineering with Claude on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:23AM (#50336499)
Not unexpected, automated RE was getting kinda crazy. And I am not sure Claude banning it now matters now anyway. The cat is largely out of the bag. It may slow it down though.
Re:$48 e-paper display can be whatever you want it to be on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:20AM (#50336473)
It is actually kinda neat on the surface. What I found more interesting that they immediately tied a whole bunch services around making it more using to anyone other than a hobbyist. Smart.
As an MBA, I can confirm. We might not necessarily do it well, but we can do it:D
It took a moment:D I wanna call this art:D
Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:02PM (#50320201)
It is true and it is worth pointing out. Still, you have to admit that what he did here shows the distance of how easy it is to get from prompt to a working prototype if you have a clear idea of what you want to do (edit: his blog claims 3h.. which seems like a neat outcome if it includes gathering hn info from scratch ).
Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Saturday October 31, 2026 @04:38PM (#50319953)
I currently use downloaded and curated youtube videos on my local server ( mostly for my kid so that I don't have to deal with youtube autoplay or her clicking something kid would ), but this is just a reminder of much google has changed for the worse.
Re:It's Time to Ditch Chrome on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:43PM (#50312435)
All depends on the amount of annoying you are willing to put up with. Some of the companies have started implement changes that make it harder to log into their services from privacy oriented browsers. I am personally at crossroads and didn't quite decide how to proceed.
Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:58PM (#50312170)
<< Have you not interacted with a once star senior engineer who now operates at the level of a low-quality junior because they refuse to use AI?

I can honestly say no. I might question your premise a little. Lets hypothetically say you got Karpathy level senior; clearly a star and beam of sunshine in an otherwise dreary world. Is he now less of a star just because he won't use AI?

It is a real question, because if he is then the question becomes why.

Did he simply stop working as much? Or is he working the same amount, but it looks like he is doing less? If it merely looks like it, we may well have office situation on our hands, where rank and file may end up turning to management and asking themselves and the management one simple question:

What exactly it is you are doing here?

I know for a fact good management can enable some things, but I am starting to question the blind fervor I seem to see more of lately. If you can't motivate Karpathy or worse, you now are suddenly are unable to see his value, then maybe it is not Karpathy's fault.

<< This is a similar situation; they're not kicking out engineers for being 5% less productive, they're re-interviewing to find engineers who are 1/10th or 1/100th as productive as their peers

And this may be the big part: productivity. The problem is that productivity along the lines of silly metrics like: lines of code, agents commits per engineer are.. uhh.. not useless exactly, but, how do I phrase it a sensible way so that it reaches at least one stray manager that watches this conversation,

*really fucking dumb metric to treat as a measure stick.*

But who am I to judge.

<< but it's a necessary action

None of it is necessary. By definition it is all elective. That said, the nature of that relationship goes both ways and, I will be super subtle here, right now it is not the engineers, who can't do it all.

Quite the opposite, management could find itself in a pickle now, because it has neither skill to drive the development, practical knowledge that you only get from getting to close to the abyss, 'taste', theoretical foundation, curiosity or even basic exposure that would it let develop either of the previous facets.

Make no mistake, a lot of us choose to do deal with some of the idiocy for a stability gain. But, if there is none, why do I need you? I might as well try to strike out on my own and watch the AI coded towers fall ( being mildly dramatic for visual purposes; amusingly, I don't think I am that far off ) .

Re:Product Managers aren't safe either on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:53PM (#50310653)
:D Eh. We know how it is going to work, which is the more ability you have to stay away from the 'blast radius' as some llms would like to say, the happier you will be when it inevitably tumbles down, because a very, very confident manager thought they understood what they pressed Y for.
Re:Product Managers aren't safe either on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:51PM (#50310625)
I honestly can't tell if it is satire or not and I like AI.
Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:31PM (#50309044)
As I think about it, I am starting to suspect that it a layoff in disguise. Even the likely backlash part is. Still, it seems.. bold primarily because, if anything, we are in a transition period of sorts. No one figured everything out yet. You want people who can do it, but those are the ones who will jump ship, because those are the ones with options.
Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:33PM (#50308264)
<< “I want to acknowledge myself, personally, that there was a communication failure on my part and there are many things that probably could and should have been communicated differently, and this is something that I’ll have to reflect on and improve over time. So I will do that.”

Note how he says that he wants to 'acknowledge' things. Not apologize. Not that he is wrong about the re-interviews. He says he didn't use nice enough language to soften the blow. Basically, in simple terms, he didn't Lisa it up as temporary refund adjustment.

edit: and the passive voice is a cherry on top

edit2: I gotta say -- all those CEOs are getting a little uppity for people who likely use copilot for summarizing emails.

Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:55PM (#50306694)
Few people will argue with the logic of whether it is technically accurate ( assuming actual deployment will be optimal, because that is hardly a given ). It is just amusingly self-serving. It is almost as if McD got to decide you can only eat there.
Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:05PM (#50305890)
In a sense, I think everyone knew it was coming. Historically speaking, in US at least, there initially may be a notable number of upstarts, but those numbers quickly dwindle to form oligopolies. That is how we end up with 3 million cereal types, but 2-3 companies controlling them. The same repeats throughout most industries with an annoying consistency.

I actually use both gpt and local qwen and I personally think the question tends to be of what one needs ( speed? privacy? lack of corporate silliness? ).

Still, it is sad that we can predict the future so well based merely on what happened before.

Edit: I certainly hope I don't have to explain to you why the above is relevant. No market participant would dare to argue this if the competition was healthy.

<< Coming from an era when S&P 100 companies having 3% single day stock swings would be front page news what's happening today is hard to comprehend. Intel losing $150B market value, Google $480B, Microsoft $360B earlier this year, SpaceX $400B, Nvidia having several $500B+ swings in either direction... People are barely blinking at trillion-dollar companies gaining or losing a quarter of their value overnight.

You compared old times to new times. I am simply testing whether it makes sense. Just a bigger absolute number on one day does not change much, and just the 150B example only a decade ago is different from 150B now.

And you seem to know this.. so why offhand response?

edit: 150B clarification

Massie has certainly upped his overall profile lately. Still, the whole saga is at heart 'who guards the guards' and there is no easy solution to that beyond engaged ( and thoughtful ) populace.
