Re:Bank of Japan, in a Surprise, Adopts Negative Interest Rate on Tuesday February 02, 2016 @08:00PM (#11024020)
Yeah, dang is really strict. He or she, I don't know what it is, maybe transgender, moderates with pride. Protect the "boys club" and all.
"legitimate government interests" should be enough to scare everyone. It's not for criminals, just like gun control is not about criminals. Think the worst, 'cause it don't get any better!
Re:Dell XPS 15 review: A bigger version of the best PC laptop on Tuesday February 02, 2016 @01:10PM (#11021163)
Same here with Mint 17 on a 2010 MBP. The headphone jack lights up red and won't turn off. Weird...
Re:Quiver: Programmer's Notebook for OS X on Tuesday February 02, 2016 @10:03AM (#11019783)
I think it's fun to create anything, especially if it involves programming by myself, outside of a stupid agile environment with Scrum idiots running around preaching the gospel.
Re:The Other Children of Silicon Valley on Monday February 01, 2016 @07:26PM (#11016819)
Wealth has nothing to do with poor kids under performing in school. It has to do with not having a father in the house and the proper values being taught.

There's no hungry kids starving and being saved by the Federal School Lunch Program, and there's not any lead paint on the walls of the public housing, and schools have plenty of resources as evidenced by the multi-million dollar budgets the districts have. But leave it up to the Leftist to ride in to the rescue spouting off about the poor being disadvantaged.

There are poor people, but most are just sponging off the welfare system. And these people can get jobs and school loans just like I and others have done. And you know what? Welfare and school loans are there to help these people, and effort has a lot to do with their making it!

Re:Yahoo to cut 15 percent jobs, close several units on Monday February 01, 2016 @03:37PM (#11015188)
I still use it for email.
Re:Treasure in a Cornfield on Monday February 01, 2016 @02:15PM (#11014481)
It's cool and all, but I was hoping they would find a bunch of gold bars or something. It's kind of a bummer to go through all that and just find some shoes and canned goods... :( Actually, I'd be pretty pissed off.
Re:Microsoft Edge records browsing history in InPrivate mode on Monday February 01, 2016 @02:07PM (#11014391)
Seriously, does it even matter? Your ISP knows all, the NSA knows all, the free email service providers know all. There is no privacy. Having said that, I still don't like that they know I look at porn. :)

See you back inside the Matrix...

Re:You weren't born to just write code and die on Monday February 01, 2016 @01:58PM (#11014292)
Well, that was a big waste of time. I'm glad I only skimmed it instead of reading it. It also had too many links.
Re:Obama Pledges $4B to Computer Science in US Schools on Saturday January 30, 2016 @05:34PM (#11004123)
This is just more bullshit to waste money on. In 8 years of development, I can count on one hand the programmers who showed any interest in programming outside of work, or that have GitHub accounts, or that know what a Binary Tree is. Programming has become, for the most part, Web development and the barrier to entry is so low that anyone can enter it after studying material off the Internet and watching YouTube videos. To be even more controversial, CS is not even needed for most programming today, but only for passing interviews.
Re:Why Programming is Difficult (2014) on Saturday January 30, 2016 @02:59PM (#11003468)
Too many sentences like, "you where thing when designed this thing to the next guy/gal" make reading hard. Slow down dude, wtf?
Re:Open-Sourced Logos on Saturday January 30, 2016 @02:42PM (#11003387)
Yes, but thought, money, and man hours went into them. They didn't just grab rejected logos from the "commodity" bin, which is what we have here. Seriously, if you can't put some design effort into your logo then something's wrong.
Re:Open-Sourced Logos on Saturday January 30, 2016 @10:27AM (#11002136)
They're all just geometric shapes that anyone could throw together. Really, you're pretty damn lazy or uninspired if you can't put together a stop sign outline with 2 circles on either side of it!
Re:Making 20% Time Work on Saturday January 30, 2016 @08:43AM (#11001756)
Not 20%, but I got the manager to give us 2 hours every Friday. I guess that would be 5% time. I was doing C# enterprise work at the time, so I would use those 2 hours on totally different stuff; like brushing up on C++, or dicking around with Perl.
Re:JavaScript web apps considered valuable on Thursday January 21, 2016 @09:31PM (#10950380)
Ha ha, the effing path length limit drove me crazy! There'd be 50 node_modules folders and Windows wouldn't let you delete anything; It was nuts! I had to start renaming directories to "a", "b", "c", and so on until I cut the size down. I like JS for quick personal projects, but I'm glad I don't use it professionally anymore.
Re:Why you should not develop apps for Windows 10 on Wednesday January 20, 2016 @03:16PM (#10941004)
I never liked it either, but I've worked in places where it was like the eleventh commandment and you better not say anything against it! :) I'm glad to hear it's loosing popularity.
Re:Why you should not develop apps for Windows 10 on Wednesday January 20, 2016 @03:10PM (#10940961)
I've never experienced VS crashing, but Intellisense stops working EVERY time I use VS! :)
Re:Why you should not develop apps for Windows 10 on Wednesday January 20, 2016 @02:59PM (#10940890)
I use to love the Mac and OSX, but the whole freezing up while spinning a colored ball thing has got me too pissed off to use a Mac any more. I switched to Linux a year ago and only use Windows for playing games. As for the increasing market share, I think that's more of the perceived coolness factor of a Mac. But man, I love the MBP keyboard! I can't wait to try a Happy Hacker 2.
No, it does not seem like a rational requirement. It's also none of our business what these institutions do with their earnings. Most of us will never go to Harvard and we need to get over it, regardless of our race.
Re:Dear GitHub on Thursday January 14, 2016 @07:46PM (#10906180)
I think if these people have that many issues with GitHub, they should find a replacement. That's what happened in the Node community and it led to a better Node. That's a big list of complaints and GitHub doesn't have much incentive to fix 'em except to silence a bunch of cry babies that are bitching about a free tool.
Re:Dear GitHub on Thursday January 14, 2016 @07:31PM (#10906084)
Yeah, and now look at SO, it's got so many "rules" that you can't look cross eyed at it without breaking one of them. "You don't have enough rep!" "A minimum of 15 characters per comment." "At least 5 characters per edit." "That's been asked before." Eventually, everyone just stands in line with blinders on, forced to stare straight ahead, mouth shut, one step at a time. There's never an end once you start "tackling" these so called problems.
Re:How to fix America's financial relationship to healthcare on Thursday December 31, 2015 @05:59PM (#10820205)
It's good to hear from someone that's experienced another system. I would rather have that system than one that caters to the big corporations and corrupt officials. ObamaCare just shifted the burden of the uninsured directly onto the tax payers, through subsidies, from the insurance companies and hospitals that billed higher for it. It's a BS system that allows the Obama administration to look at statistics and say, "Wow, look at how many people are insured now!"

I've been unemployed for 9 months and now have to pay the individual mandate for 6 of those months. I think the Supreme Court was bought or blackmailed on that one. We need a system, but not this one and it can't be opt-in or get fined! Maybe a sales tax would work.
