Its similar to an taxi ride without the customer service or refunds.

You're billed by the hour / mile, you can choose an economy vehicle type, but the Toyota driver kept getting lost, swapping out vehicles, changing the price, when you finally reach your destination, you need another top up.

The last big change I remember before I stopped paying attention was how they yoinked out node to replace their own JavaScript system…

Yuck

I don’t understand where this energy that signal doesn’t want 3rd party clients is coming from.

Their open source code is permissive of commercial forks.

Like, if their goal was to block third-party clients, then they would look more like Facebook or Reddit

For many people, email/phone support, password recovery, two factor authentication, etc is it much safer option to self-managing and run the risk of your hardware token or your house burning down, or getting mugged.

I’m on my phone, so it’s a little bit difficult for me to find clear examples, but I think this post talks about some of those freedom of speech violations.

I might be completely wrong, but it seems like news articles are not repeating the messages that caused the arrest. They just seem to be reporting that the arrest happened and high-level description of the content.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:57PM (#50269198)
My work gave me an m4 MacBook Pro. I could barely tell the difference between my personal computer and my work computer.
Re:Retired decorator's Pokémon cards sell for £1.5M on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:30AM (#50240313)
Also, I don't know a single person that actually enjoys playing the game. There are no popular online pokemon card games (like MTG or Board Game Arena).

Pokemon company did a terrible job designing and evolving the game itself..

golang has been backwards compatible since 2012.
Re:Does Ruby on Rails still make sense? on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:02AM (#50209187)
Didn't rails drop support for nodejs and ask everyone to migrate back to their ruby thing?
Re:Does Ruby on Rails still make sense? on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:02AM (#50209175)
yeah, maybe im just scarred from then.

Last I looked into it, Ruby added niche/wonky syntax that is useful for like specific library situations

Re:Does Ruby on Rails still make sense? on Friday October 23, 2026 @10:01AM (#50209159)
golang. golang doesn't do breaking changes.

I’m ex-ruby on rails dev.

Framework and language upgrades are super annoying in ruby and rails. LLMs obviously make it easier, but a rails project can’t be “done” or you risk being so far back in versions that it becomes impossible to leap forward to the latest when you wanna fix a bug or add a feature.

I trim and clean up my trees before they become high risk for falling over. If my neighbor fails to maintain their trees, then I may have legal grounds to remediate property damage caused by their negligence.

My presumption is the state does not regularly audit and trim high risk limbs or branches near the property line. Since the fence is owned by the state, they will not sue themselves in civil court for their own negligence.

From an Apple employee culture perspective, software team is second or third class to the hardware group.

A friend on the App Store software team wasn't invited to a private iPhone Duo preview, because she wasn't in the hardware division. She felt so disrespected and is considering leaving.

My sister (on the hardware team) shared that its a constantly cycle of non-hardware folks getting shafted and then they complain loud enough until they get 'equal' treatment until the next unfair thing rolls out.

I have ChatGPT Plus (and temporarily paid for Pro for 1 month in the summer) and I have never been asked for a phone number.

Maybe this is a new requirement and I am grandfathered in?

I'm a white foreigner in Asia and feel the exact same as you. But I also realize, because I'm different than everyone else, there is more interest in getting to know me.

Also, people that are different than everyone else (but same background as me) seek me out to be friends.

For example, there is a HUGE difference between a Seattle Tech event where I am literally the same as the other 60 people in the room vs Vietnamese Tech event where I am one of 3 people that speak english. Those other 2 English speakers are going to walk over and chat with me.

I have an abundance of positive social experiences that remind me that the highs are high and the low are low and I just need to push through it to find that next great experience.

I can definitely see how someone who doesn't have many positive reference experiences would prefer to just be alone and avoid the lows all together.

Not that you asked, but I'd encourage you to not define yourself as antisocial. You just haven't found your kin yet, and if you keep looking you can find it.

Re:Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) 2026 Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:52AM (#50082949)
that might be a nail in the conference's coffin...

You're not wrong for wanting your money back for services not provided, but also recognize this organization is to promote women in tech. A charge back kicks them while they are down.

Re:Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:48AM (#50082921)
yeah, feels like they were hoping something would come through until it didn't
Re:Apple and a Hacker's Future on Sunday October 11, 2026 @08:43PM (#50049827)
I think you’re missing my point.

No matter how much discernment and discipline about my privacy, I can’t protect myself from someone else’s lack of discipline and discernment about my privacy, especially for mandatory critical systems.

Why put in all this time to protect to my privacy when UpGuard, National public Data, etc will leak my SSN anyways?

Re:Apple and a Hacker's Future on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @02:20AM (#49974902)
According to haveibeenpwnd, the email address I've used since gmail was invite-only is in at least 39 data breaches.

In 2019, my SSN was used to purchase 4 iPhones, open 2 credit cards, and used to buy perfume in another state.

In 2026, almost mainstream messaging app monitors your private messages (yes, even Whatsapp now [0]).

Society decided that to be in it, you must give up your privacy along time ago.

Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Monday October 05, 2026 @01:24AM (#49960977)
I currently have alternative versions of these tools. I would rather run the latest qwen model or SOTA models than whatever outdated model Apple wants me to use.
Note: this is not related to spaceship pods.
You’re not forced to file jointly, but you don’t get the same benefits of 1 high earner and 1 home maker experiences.
1/ lower housing costs. Singapore has the same chinese mindset when it comes to marriage: boyfriend needs a house (and car?) before he is suitable.

19 year old Singaporeans within a year of dating must sit down with their partner's families to put a $200k sgd deposit on a house to join the 7 year waiting list so they can get married by the time they are 27.

2/ Singapore does a decent job at this, but further normalize domestic workers. Domestic workers drastically soften the blow women experience in their careers, especially with kids.

If they can push costs down further (like housing a worker is expensive), this would enable more Singaporean women to have more free time to date, get married, etc.

3/ Male Singaporeans have a mandatory 2 year service, which detracts from their time to date. Potentially offer more benefits to marriage or more time off to date.

The USA has a flavor of this: tax discounts for married couples and kids.

But your proposal really f's over people with real trauma and medical conditions that prevent them from having kids. I've met several people that don't want kids due to the trauma they endured as children or men and women that are just infertile.

I don't understand how a government app fixes the problem.

I've talked with women about this offline and they usually fire back with: "You expect women to lower their standards?"

Women would rather delay pregnancy until they find a suitable partner, than risk being with the wrong guy.

The only thing I _maybe_ can think of is governments could only show profiles in your 'tier' (looks, social economic class, etc), whereas private dating apps found that showing everyone pretty people keeps people coming back.

I built something similar, but mine used asymetric encryption.

It allowed people encrypt files and then the only person that can decrypt is the person with the private key, which may or may not be the person the encrypted the file.

Re:California is chasing wealth that has feet on Friday September 25, 2026 @12:53AM (#49840320)
In WA state (maybe others too?), the county assess my land value and the building value separately on my property taxes.

Point being: the government has been assessing land value for a long long time
