Tangram | Rust/Linux Programmer | Remote (USA) | Full Time

At Tangram, we are making a programmable build system and package manager. Check out the code samples here: https://www.tangram.dev. We are looking to work with programmers who have experience with systems programming, Linux, and Rust. As a founding engineer on a small team, you will have the opportunity to work on interesting technical problems, such as:

* Building a content-addressed distributed file system.

* Making builds serverless with Nomad, V8, and Firecracker.

We are well funded by investors including Kleiner Perkins and the founders of GitHub, Vercel, and Slack.

If you are interested in joining us on our mission to save programmers from suffering with slow, unreliable builds, please reach out at [email protected].

Re:Filesystem hierarchy standard (2013) on Friday July 29, 2022 @11:07AM (#32277900)
What in particular are you referring to? A lot of software still depends on paths that adhere to the FHS. Dynamic linkers, etc all bake in assumptions about search paths based on FHS. Certainly application developers will violate FHS when placing config files etc but I’m curious what the Distros are tossing out?
Really excited about this and rust-vmm which allows you to build custom Virtual Machine Monitors. The problem with a solution like Firecracker, and why they are able to get such fast startup times and a small memory footprint is that they selected a subset of features to expose. This limits the capabilities of the running container, which is of course the point. But it is not general purpose enough for all workloads. For instance, I want to use Firecracker but require host file system sharing. Rust-vmm looks like it is trying to solve this problem by providing a collection of rust crates that allow users build their own VMM with the features they need. It's build-a-bear for VMMs :)

This post does a really great job explaining the risk we all take when downloading code that we haven't audited from the internet. I've never taken the time to audit the code I'm including in my projects. Instead, I blindly trust that someone else has. I love how socket has identified common security red flags and is automatically warning users about what they find. Great to see!
Re:Internals of Go's new fuzzing system on Friday February 18, 2022 @12:54AM (#30382548)
Deno is another project that is trying to add more to a stdlib. In some ways this is really fantastic because in the JavaScript ecosystem there is so much fatigue in deciding what libraries to use. On the flip side, if you couple too much into the stdlib then you’re limiting the huge benefit of an open market.

Tangram | Rust Programmer | Remote USA

Tangram makes it easy for programmers to train, deploy, and monitor machine learning models. With Tangram, programmers can train models and make predictions on the command line or with libraries for languages including Elixir, Go, JS, PHP, Python, Ruby, and Rust, and learn about their models and monitor them in production from a web application. Tangram is open source and everything is written in Rust, from the core machine learning algorithms to the web application. We are looking for strong Rust programmers who love the Rust programming language and either have machine learning experience or are interested in learning machine learning. Here are some projects you might work on:

* Design and implement the SDK for training a machine learning model in Tangram's language libraries.

* Add support for A/B testing multiple versions of a machine learning model.

* Add support for training new model types including time series forecasting.

* Add automated alerting for statistical data drift detection by implementing Chi-Square or Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests.

Tangram is founded by former MIT, Facebook and Slack engineers. We recently raised a seed round from Kleiner Perkins and our angel investors include the creator of NextJS, the founder of GitHub, and the CEO of Slack. We are looking to grow our current team of 3 to 6 in the next couple of months and are open to programmers working remotely from anywhere in the US. Re:From Node to Ruby on Rails on Thursday December 16, 2021 @12:12PM (#29580624)
Agree! But isn’t it kind of weird that we accept that ml happens only in python? I’m biased because I’m working on a startup that makes machine learning sdks in ruby, elixir, golang, php, JavaScript etc. Also, to clarify what you are saying, you think companies are choosing to write their entire stack in python just because ml tools are in python?
Re:Ask HN: I'm looking for a good book on the fundamentals of CS on Thursday December 09, 2021 @10:42AM (#29498620)
Bottom up cs is a great resource. https://www.bottomupcs.com/ It might feel very low level at first but once you understand these fundamental building blocks of computers you will be really well equipped to build upon this knowledge and learn higher level concepts. I also think the Rust Programming book (https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/) is a great resource for general programming knowledge. Some sections e.g. on the borrow checker and lifetimes aren’t 100% applicable to general programming knowledge but I still recommend it. It is more of a 201 level book instead of 101 though.

Re:Supercharge Your Node.js with Rust on Sunday October 24, 2021 @11:21AM (#28978717)
We're doing exactly this in our language libraries for Tangram. Our core machine learning code is written in Rust and we use a native add-on so people can make predictions directly from their javascript apps. In Python, this is incredibly common: NumPy, LightGBM, XGBoost are written in C/C++ and exposed to Python.

Tangram | Senior Rust Programmer | Remote | https://www.tangram.dev

Tangram is an all in one machine learning framework designed for programmers. With Tangram, developers can train models and make predictions on the command line or with libraries for languages including Elixir, Go, JS, Python, Ruby, and Rust, and learn about their models and monitor them in production from a web application. To learn more about what the product does, watch the demo on the homepage at https://www.tangram.dev or check it out on GitHub at https://www.github.com/tangramdotdev/tangram.

We are looking to grow our engineering team with senior Rust programmers. We are currently based in Boston, MA but are looking to build a remote team. At Tangram, you'll get to work on everything from our core machine learning algorithms to writing front-end code in Rust! We are looking for developers with experience in Rust and familiarity with or willingness to learn machine learning concepts. If this sounds exciting, email me (Isabella, cofounder) at [email protected].

I couldn’t agree more that a black box does not result in confidence in your modeling! Tangram is not a black box :) we tell you exactly the hyper parameter grid we trained, the settings that led to the best model, and provide explanations per prediction based on SHAP. And if you don’t like our settings, you can pass a config file, specifying everything from the column types in your csv, to the features produced, to the hyper parameters of the models you want trained. https://www.tangram.dev/docs/guides/train_with_custom_config...
Yes! We want to make the whole ML process from training to deployment to monitoring radically more convenient. The CLI interface makes it easy to quickly train ML models without ever opening a Jupyter notebook, learning what pandas and numpy are etc. And after you’re done training, we want you to be able to incorporate your models into your existing stack: we have language libraries for programming languages traditionally underserved by the current ml tools: ruby, golang, elixir, nodejs, rust. (We also have python). All prediction happens in process with no network requests, meaning you don’t have to deploy a separate service to host your ml models :)
