So... a 30A breaker instead of a 20A breaker? And a few hundred bucks creating a venting solution to the outside? I could set this up at my house right now, by myself, in a day, maybe 2.
Re:Why I Am a Programmer on Sunday October 25, 2026 @08:10PM (#50237346)
Where I landed was as such: I hated the very concept of AI. My post history, if you look, deliberately referred to the tech as LLMs, and I mostly still do.

I've been behind the 8-ball at $dayjob, for reasons I don't have a say in, nor does anyone in my entire CoC. Vendors are delayed, we have hard shipping deadlines on our end.

Work pays for an expensive "AI" sub. I used it because I'm in a jam and deadlines are tight.

It worked. I'm a decent engineer/programmer. The tech saved me a month, at least. I think the money around all this tech is wrong and bad, but in a vacuum the tech works.

Well since you mentioned it, I posit that most of the financial issues the world is facing today is because the GFC wasn’t allowed to occur, it’s been a slow bleeding out ever since.
Have you kept up with the financial status of France and GB? Read anything about the riots?
Squishing the budget deficit for 1 cycle in 2 years.
The point of the law was to generate money for the state to fund the same mistakes France and GB are currently reeling from. Reducing power had nothing to do with it.
18 day old account and 450+ upvotes, man that's impressive. Spit what out?
Oh. Maybe make a country people want to live in instead of flee. I didn't realize it came across as a riddle.
Re:OpenAI: Securing our frontier model training environment on Friday October 23, 2026 @09:40PM (#50217623)
Read between the lines. None of this is surprising, none of this was an accident. LLMs do what they are instructed to do.
> The US definitely has some culpability for making other places harder to live in.

You didn’t answer my question. :)

Oh man, they answered the question in the beginning:

> The reason, according to the researchers, has to do with the information environment AI systems can access.

Amusingly:

> The researchers also found that incorporating X search amplified left-leaning recommendations in Japan, the opposite of expectations based on the U.S. discourse environment.

I guess “something” meant a vetted web of trust. My children will be better off if they don’t need to learn to navigate the internet cesspool, so either you’re wrong and it sucks of them, or you’re right and it sucks for them. Either way, well-played! Very clever!
> People already risk death to cross the border

At what percentage would you say? 1%, 3%, 87%?

Does the country they are fleeing have no culpability? Why are they leaving?

Account created date + … something?
Re:Docker Is Weird on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:26PM (#50202980)
Oh wow, hi! I think my biggest “gripe” with docker is that everyone grabs it as a hammer and views many problems as a nail. Am I way off base with that? What was your original vision for how docker might be used in the wild?
I actually enjoy sports gambling, and since its been legal and the apps hit, I have won more than I've lost over the past what, 3-4 years now. Not a lot more, but enough to where I haven't had to deposit money in a few years. Call it an entertaining hobby, my goal isn't to make real money, just to feel smug about being smarter than the odds-makers.

I completely agree with you. Watching gambling ads makes me irrationally angry. They should absolutely, 100% be banned from advertising, similarly/identical to cigarettes. Nuke them from orbit.

Whenever I write I library I don't allocate memory. If memory needs to be allocated, the program calling into the library allocates memory and passes a pointer (or reference I suppose) into the library call.

Clearly this can't be enforced, but I've always found it bad practice to allocate memory inside a library.

I’ve purchased (and sold) multiple single family homes in central Maryland that did not and do not have an HoA. Under 275k, with excellent schools.

It’s really not hard to find, though last time I bought was a decade ago and prices have increased, the HoA status (a lack of an HoA) has not changed.

I also explicitly refused to even consider an HoA neighborhood. Lol, fuck all that.

Sorry everyone here is dumping on you, I think kids these days say some like “go touch grass” when this kind of thing happens.

I think this is neat and honestly the perfect use of an LLM, just some for-fun project to visualize something completely inconsequential and nostalgic.

Somehow is devolved into dunking on the west and other unfortunate “better than thou” comments.

Re:Gold is now the top U.S. export on Saturday October 17, 2026 @04:12PM (#50134668)
I still don’t get it. Why does everyone want gold? Its uses are some types of electronics and jewelry. Almost seems like crypto, it has value because it is somewhat rare… and everyone else also thinks it has value.

Sincere question.

Yes they lock it before the snap, or before the pitch is thrown. All I can figure is that they have someone at every game, or somehow have a "live-er" live feed than genpop.
My contention is that someone 'dobbing' on someone else holds zero weight. Also, we just went from ' a friend' to 'a police informant' quite quickly.
“Hey this guy stole a painting.” knocks on door “did you steal a painting?” “No” “can we come in?” “No”

That’s how this would go. How do you expect it would go?

At least on the two big sports gambling sites, they lock the app from making bets during these moments so you can't. I can verify this because I like to go to sports games and had that idea. "Oh I'm here live I wonder if this will work?" Doesn't work.

Can't speak to prediction markets, haven't touched 'em.

Re:'AI' Is Not a Tool by Rich Hickey on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:50PM (#50062001)
So gdb isn’t a tool then. Huh, that seems odd.

AI is only a tool, it isn’t anything more than that. I use AI because work pays for an expensive subscription, and I’ve found it helpful… as a tool.

I prefer the freedom of putting a pot of water on to boil and walking off to take a leak, personally. That would drive me absolutely insane.

FWIW, I believe petroleum is a synonym for crude oil. If you put it in your cars fuel tank, you'll have a bad time. Gasoline is made from petrolium.
