Re:Stalwart v1.0: The Fastest Mail Server on the Planet on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:31AM (#50254725)
I've also been self hosting for a couple decades, and I've taken this approach a step further. I self-deliver to most destinations, but for a while there was one destination (a regional ISP's mail server) that would not accept my emails. My solution was to route _only_ emails for that destination through MailGun. The volume was so low that I stayed within Mailgun's free tier.
This was a temporary measure for a couple vintages/years after a frost decimated nearly all the vines in the BC Okanagan. The regulators stepped in to allow relaxed importation rules to help wineries survive. A winery like Mission Hill typically grows and sources all of its grapes within BC.
You can still get a long exposure by accumulating many 1/5,000 exposure shots together. Just like a regular long exposure, this will still cancel out random noise and improve SNR, and also still has the tradeoff of motion blur. This kind of accumulation is commonly done in photography-adjacent technologies like spectroscopy.

Regardless, I agree with your larger point that the proposed system would be entirely impractical!

Flock is such a scummy company. One must just read a bit of the coverage from 404 Media [1] or Benn Jordan [2] and get a whiff of how this company is handling pretty legitimate criticism about privacy and basic device security.

This is interesting. Do you have any specific examples?
Re:Native Instant Space Switching on macOS on Friday April 10, 2026 @12:02AM (#47713469)
Same same. I'd been a die hard mac user since System 6 in the early 90s, but last year I switched to Asahi Linux and my next hardware may or may not be from Apple.
Re:Spotify playing ads for paid subscribers on Thursday March 19, 2026 @12:55AM (#47435122)
Is there a reason to use Gonic instead of Navidrome? I've been using the latter for hosting my music collection for over a year now and really like it. Good riddance Spotify. [1]

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for more choices. But it seems like you have opinions on this topic and I'd like to hear them.

Same. It looks like battery replacement from ifixit is not too difficult, so I plan to do that when the time comes.

Incidentally, I just switched to Asahi Linux, but that was for software quality and openness reasons, rather than anything to do with performance.

The new rules will be incorporated into tzdata, which is used for various operating systems, software libraries, etc.

I’m with Freedom Mobile in Vancouver, currently using a rather old iPhone. My next phone will probably run GOS.

I have issues with Freedom on my iPhone too. Poor signal, or else “good” signal but poor data backhaul.

Are you pretty sure your issues went away after going back to stock Android? Or is it possible it’s just Freedom Mobile’s general issues?

Re:Is the RAM shortage killing small VPS hosts? on Thursday January 29, 2026 @06:55PM (#46818683)
I did a detailed review of a few Canadian VPS providers last year.

https://lukecyca.com/2025/canadian-vps-review.html

Last year, I moved from DigitalOcean to FullHost (their Vancouver datacentre) for hosting a small SaaS and a bunch of personal projects. It's cheaper and FAR better performance.

Me too. I’ve been an Apple fan for 3 decades, and the Mac has always been my daily driver.

Up until this past November when I installed Asahi and haven’t looked back. It’s been tough work switching, but the writing’s been on the wall for a while now, so best get started.

Also been hit with this using DHL. Doing trade with the USA is such a gamble now with so much uncertainty.

Suit yourself. I think a little whimsy is refreshing.

Finally!

Here is a delightful article from NYT from last year on this topic. Truly fascinating and bewildering.

Re:NIST Randomness Beacon Shut Down on Monday November 10, 2025 @01:32PM (#45879148)
An automated batch job started failing for us recently, and we found that it is because this source of randomness from NIST has been shut down "Due to a lapse in federal funding".

This is delightful. Personal projects are a great place to buck the technical monoculture and try something unique. I really enjoyed reading this.

This entire blog really resonates. I don't take it all literally, but it is funny and insightful and dark and poetic and accurate in many ways.

More weird stuff like this please.
