Ask HN: Moving to US from the UK

I'm wondering if anyone has done this before and can share any tips? What to look out for? What expenses would I have that differs to the UK?I'm currently living and working in London, have a wife and child. My company has an office in Newport Beach and is looking to relocate me there; so this is less about VISA, but more about lifestyle, tax etc.Appreciate your help as always

I use gocardless in the UK. Highly recommended.
Re:Leaving the Nest on Friday June 03, 2016 @05:04PM (#11833271)
I was at work the other day when I got a push notification that there was smoke upstairs from Nest protect. I left work immediately and arrived home to the smell of burning, an incense plug had been left in and was melting.

Nest saved me, the ROI for me is priceless. Thanks Tony, good luck in your next venture - learn from your mistakes.

Re:Ask HN: What HN meetups and groups do you know? on Monday May 09, 2016 @07:21AM (#11658927)
Just signed up to London, if anyone fancies a beer instead of waiting for the next meetup just shout (Email in my profile)
Yes, but why has Hacker News chosen to force this upon Tor users? Given the audience, I think they should whitelist as per these instructions:

http://fontfamous.com/

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11247567

FYI I found it by Googling "site:news.ycombinator.com font logos"

Can it have touch support so mobile browsers can interact with it? I can see that being incredibly useful as it allows you to have multiple actions on limited screen real estate.

I found these guys after being advised to find a Sales Guy for my side-project:

Disclaimer:

I'm not associated with them in anyway but the link is my referral link.

I would pay for this - email in my profile, let me know when you launch.
@tixocloud - Can you drop me an email (in my profile) as I think I'm also working in the same market but from a different angle. Couldn't find a way to contact you on your website.
Re:Ask HN: Would you hire a programmer without a degree? on Thursday April 14, 2016 @08:35AM (#11496096)
I'm in the UK and we definitely hire without a degree. We do, however, require a few years exp. to make up for it.
I only have a LinkedIn account as the App I have requires me to have one. If I delete my account, my App goes too. If I create a new account just for the App, all my users have to re-link their accounts. Sucks.
I just signed up as a business and decided not to proceed. I don't like the upfront cost, I would much rather a pay-per-click model or a percentage of sales achieved. Feels like too much risk for an unknown, unproven service.
Any ideas on how? I have tried Facebook/Google/LinkedIn Ads' and didn't get much response, it's a high touch sales process that involves pointing out the problem they have, most are aware of social media, have created accounts but then do nothing with them.
I agree to some extent, but normally they would expect there money to be spent on marketing etc. rather than to cover my household bills?
I should mention the reason I haven't made an 'Apply HN' post is the money available ($20k) wouldn't be enough for me to cover my expenses and quit my job.

Ask HN: At what point does your side project become your job?

I run www.propertywizard.io and also work full-time. I launched in December and I am at £544 monthly recurring revenue. The cost to run is roughly £1k a year, so I'm profitable if you don't take into account my time.I have a child and a mortgage to upkeep so I cannot leave my job until it is making significantly more, however, I know it needs my full attention to reach that stage. What would you...

I didn't get an email, just wanted to make sure I didn't miss it?
Re:Google nabs Apple as a cloud customer on Wednesday March 16, 2016 @05:54PM (#11300981)
Side note, but I'm impressed the article didn't try and put a positive spin on it given Jeff Bezos' interest in Business Insider.
It works worldwide, the only reason I'm concentrating on the UK at the moment is because of my high touch sales process. I'd love to chat more (email in my profile) and I'd appreciate any connections you can make. I'd also be happy to pay you a referral fee.
If anyone reading this is interested in this product please email me (in my profile) - as this will be ready very soon after chatting with the OP.
FYI applypage.io is available.
I think you're onto something here but don't realise quite how useful what you have can be in the right hands, with the right pitch.

Push the mobile side of things, right now every recruitment site has a brick wall where the CV upload is mandatory but every iPhone user cannot upload a file - you're solving that problem and then some.

My product is similar to HootSuite, Buffr etc. but by focusing on a Niche (Real Estate) I'm seeing promising traction. By focusing you're going to find it easier to reach potential customers and your product development will be cut down too.

Are you in the UK? I'd love to meet for a beer and discuss, I think this could be huge.

Nice, any reason you haven't launched it as an App and tried to make some money? :)
How do you see them using it? I know a couple of a Tech recruiters and I'm happy to email them on your behalf if I can understand the use case.
