And yet, there are so many layers of abstraction under everything that it all still feels no faster than it all di in the late 90's...

We don't need to develop extremely high abstractions yet. Not until all the layers below are optimised.

Re:What tweaks do you use in your Macintosh? on Saturday October 19, 2013 @03:46AM (#6575705)
Quicksilver is back under development - the latest version is 1.1.2, and the last commit at their repo[1] was five days ago... Not on fire, but there is stuff happening.

Also, you may like Moom[2] for window management - sucky name, but the feature set makes up for it ;)

Why bother? It's intuitive enough: "Alpha" => 'A', "Bravo" => 'B', and so on...

English > NATO may not be easy without memorization, but there's no need to memorize anything if you want NATO > English.

I'm not a heavy Linux user, but I have this on my experimental Arch Linux installation (it works on Ubuntu as well)...

Why does this sound exactly like the Ubuntu Edge?
Those stripes are quite uncomfortable for my eyes. You should consider something more subtle...

You need more than 200 karma, which you seem to have.

Re:DoS exploit crashes iOS/OSX devices using WebKit on Thursday August 29, 2013 @05:25AM (#6294987)
But it is "particular" to WebKit (on iOS and OSX, due to CoreText), which Firefox has nothing to do with.

There's an error in the sample code.

    for(int i=0; i<ar2.length; i=i+1)
The '<' should be changed to '<'

Re:What a 600,000-megapixel-wide picture looks like on Sunday August 04, 2013 @06:29AM (#6155213)
This guy seems to be taking a pic of his friend in fromt of the gigapixel rig: http://360gigapixels.com/tokyo-tower-panorama-photo/?v=151.1...

Really awesome panorama, makes you feel like some kind of government agent...

This doesn't make sense - the apps that aren't in the list of the top 300,000 downloaded apps may not get many downloads as far as we know, but without further information, how can you arbitrarily declare that as the threshold for "zombieness"?

Realistically though, it is really hard to get some attention in the App Store nowadays, and Apple really should build some mechanism into the store to combat this.

I'm quite sure that they are merely replacing some of the application's image resources and resigning it... But I could be wrong.
Re:A Dark Room - minimalist text-based game on Saturday June 29, 2013 @05:56AM (#5961887)
I think it's actually using local storage, which is a bit harder to get at. But I ended up surpassing my iPad game within 15 minutes anyway... Good fun :)
Re:A Dark Room - minimalist text-based game on Friday June 28, 2013 @11:19PM (#5961401)
Darn, guess I'll have to start all over again on my PC.

Seems like there'd be a use for a way to "save" games by emailing a parameterized URL to yourself... Or just an alternative to arrow keys for all of those tablet users out there.

Still a great game, though! Next time I'm feeling like procrastinating on a 2007 vintage netbook, I'll know where to look :)

Re:A Dark Room - minimalist text-based game on Friday June 28, 2013 @11:11PM (#5961388)
I just bought a compass, and entered "A barren world" on my iPad... And I'm stuck. What are the controls for this part of the game?
