What is the first step to de-googlify your life ?

Is it really an affordable situation with the current pricing of the RPI to setup a computer cafe for the kids who don't have access to the computers and internet ?

Re:Ask HN: What Are the Big Problems? on Wednesday August 19, 2020 @08:08AM (#24209566)
Quality Software : Yes, this is becoming more and more important and is overlooked at many levels. With more of our infrastructure, lives and the future of humanity in the hands of a bunch of software & hardware. We need to take things a tad bit more seriously. I believe this is not yet a big problem but it is becoming one.

wow! I was not aware that it is copy-righted. That is shitty at so many levels. But, genuine questions, what's stopping you guys from designing a new flag ? Is it the reach of the existing flag or the resources required to create a new one and spread it again ?
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your other half of life? on Wednesday August 12, 2020 @10:52PM (#24139504)
I guess everyone has a point in life they realise they are not in the same mental state they want to be in. Growing up with lot of issues in the family and financial trouble. I kind of dumped me into work head first and used that as a tool to distract myself from everything around me. No social life. No hanging out with the friends, family or co workers.

While I did good at work I was kind of viewed as the serious person whom you don't go to for small talk. On top of that added up more responsibility with our necessarily getting more benefits( since am not that fun person to hang out with or to be around) This put me in an eternal state of anxiety with every increasing load of work and my issues compounding.

It finally led to a burnout of massive level where I started hating my work and gave up reading or writing anything technical. I couldn't force myself to even write a small program. I constantly doubted myself. Kicked myself for all the small things and abused myself literally.

Then finally I came to terms and took a break. Accepted that work is just another part of the whole life. No one dies if I don't work for a day or fail to deliver the project. But, there are people in my life who get worried if I don't call them in a week. Its good to have the around and value them.

Again, don't have any practical solutions but you need to know the value of the things you are dealing with. You need to prioritise them at each level.

I think of journaling as a log to debug myself and it has helped me out so well in finding out lot of physical health issues and mental states which I want to cultivate and avoid.
Re:Tell HN: I just made my first sale on Wednesday August 12, 2020 @10:38PM (#24139419)
“The 3 most harmful addictions are cocaine, carbohydrates and a monthly salary” says Nassim Taleb in his book black swan. I guess the first sale from the product you built also goes in the same line but in a positive way!
I love wikipedia as much as anybody I have known. I currently don't donate but would love to once my situation changes. Their donation request is the most horrible one I have seen. They should definitely work on their tone and presentation. Having said that I feel they shouldn't need to ask for donation because they are basically providing the top search results for most of the search engines and Digital voice assistants like Alexa and should be able to have a stream of income from the big corps with out effecting their integrity.
Re:Independence, autonomy, and too many small teams on Friday August 07, 2020 @03:36AM (#24079325)
Really like the article. How do you approach a reverse situation. Where you are working with a small team and there are lot of moving pieces. I work for a small org which builds and maintains their own in-house software. It's not a single product, more of a duct tape of tools. Given a team size of 10 people and ~50 projects, like a bunch of cli tools, web applications, desktop applications, written by many people and passed down legacy stuff, how would one organise the team and drive the development effort.
Re:Ask HN: How do you fall (back) asleep? on Thursday July 30, 2020 @07:01AM (#23996741)
Waking up at the same time everyday!

Sounds counter intuitive but forcing myself to wake up at the same time irrespective of the quality of sleep has forced my body to adapt. If some reason I couldn't get a good sleep, I still force myself to get up at the scheduled time. This makes me drowsy on the day but I will be tired enough to get a deep sleep next day. If I let myself take few more hours of nap by snoozing because I didn't got enough sleep that spirals down.

Re:Do you struggle with anxiety from work? on Thursday July 30, 2020 @06:56AM (#23996701)
I have been in a lot of stress lately because of the workplace dynamics. Initially I couldn’t even know if it’s actually work related or if I am going through some kind of health issues. After thorough investigation I kind of realized its mostly the work pressure which is acting on my nerves and causing me to trip. Here is the rough approach I followed to start debugging myself.

Physical: 3 major components...

Sleep: Are you getting the right quantity and quality of sleep.

Exercises: Are you getting enough physical activity? Make sure your routine involves some sort of sport which you are excited about and one which takes you out in nature and sunlight.

Nutrition: Monitor what you are putting in your body and more importantly when. Cook food, real food. Make sure you are taking the necessary supplements like Vitamin D( most are deficient).

Mental:

Meditation: I am still trying to get the hang of it. Hearing a lot of great things and trying to spend at least half an hour in a sit.

Journaling: Game changer for me. https://neilkakkar.com/the-human-log.html

Learning: Last but not the least reading, listening or watching to new and interesting ideas and people.

Spiritual:

This is personal and you need to sit with yourself and analyse what's working and what’s not. Take some time off and listen to yourself. This is always the most tricky one.

Hope this rambling is of some value! Cheers!

Re:Is leisure part of your productivity routine? on Thursday July 30, 2020 @03:57AM (#23995712)
After burning myself by overworking for almost a decade with out break, I recently got a 3 months break. Got laid off, thanks to COVID and it showed me the value of leisure. I was so stressed out I didn't felt like working at all. I am the kind of person who used to spend the weekends on the latest js framework or some new language features. I simply dropped everything for almost the whole time. Read a lot of non-fiction. Did lot of physical activity like swimming and running. Spend most of the time listening to podcasts while learning to bake.

This gave me a new perspective on the leisure time, which I didn't had before. Now that I am slowly getting back to work I want to make leisure an active part of my routine. It is going to be tricky but at least I will try to continue my swims & runs.

Re:Interview Nightmares on Thursday July 30, 2020 @03:46AM (#23995662)
I recently had an interview where I was supposed to record the screen while I am solving the problem and share it with the interviewer. I couldn't do it. I am one of those people who's mind goes blank when someone is standing behind me and watching over the shoulders. The thought of recording my screen induced the same feelings.

Ask HN: As a new hire how to deal with legacy codebase and introduce standards

Recently accepted an offer to join a small size company as a mid developer. From the internal scoop and the interview I already know the code base is not great. There is a lot of technical debt, legacy tooling, poor coding practices and a lot of junk. I don't want to give up and just write more cruft or throw tantrums and pester everyone to re-write stuff. If you are in my position, How would...

well this is one amazing article. The author just earned my mad respect. Just bumped up his book on my read list. I find it interesting to find out how the entire system is shaping up.

For me operation vacation is the interesting point of the presentation apart from the regular ML stuff. That's something which we need to integrated in our regular development workflow.
interesting interpretation. I guess, sometimes you need to know the author to understand what they meant more than what they say.
can someone mind ELI5 "the high minimum, high maximum"

Ask HN: How to create a framework than an end product

"Stop thinking about creating the perfect end product and create a framework under which the right systems can emerge and continue to grow as we learn more."Not sure where I read this but found it while reading about software architecture. It kinda stuck with me. Any other resources which helps gain more understanding on this approach and implementing it. Any products out there which does this...
