Since we're on about distribution, I converted a nodejs application to Crystal. The docker containers were 1GB vs 20MB.
I've never written a line of ruby in my life. For me, Crystal is an easier and asthetically prettier alternative to rust. It's syntax and type system are superior to golang. It doesn't use a giant VM.
> And the people who might crow about "security" - my device, my rules. I can block it on the network if I want.

We've entered a sad dystopia when the manufacturer is the leading security threat to the integrity of my personal devices.

But they paid for the $4,000 treadmill, not expecting it to magically become the $400 treadmill.

Are there any good Linux CLI tools for generating an ERD?

I'm attempting to make a ERD and most of what I find on google are just heavily SEO'd SaaS-wares begging me to pay $$ per month for the privilege of manually dragging my mouse around their slow websites for hours. I'm using postgres but I'm fine with anything that requires a little bit of scripting or config files as long as it doesn't require yet another free trial of barely useful. The...

I typically suggest something like your first 25 domains are exempt, registered businesses also get some reasonable amount. Past that there should be a relatively hefty squatting fee. Maybe additional exemptions can be applied for.

My first thought, while I don't know the exact rights of the parties involved, they should have filed a complaint with ICANN regardless.

While true, a free and open web is generally desirable, and we'd like to keep the barriers of entry for federation to a minimum. If someone was ready to start mycool.forum, but doesn't have $500/yr to start a website, they must now wade through a garbage pile of "minimum $2,000 bid" squatted domains, weird TLDs that could declare your domain premium and charge $400,000/yr at any time, maybe even if the only thing "premium" about the name is that your website got popular, or buy a domain like themycoolforum50.com.

This might be only one managable issue, but these things add up, and the more they add up, the more facebook becomes the only website people use.

Was it {firstname}{lastname}.gtld or only one of those?

I do have a complaint about relatively new TLDs. Did you know .forum domains are $500 to $2000 per year?

We live in a world where everybody is complaining about censorship and nazis, but one of the best new TLDs for an independent forum is prices out 99% of the market!

Of course, there are plenty of TLDs in the $5-$20 range, which are great, but this will cause cheap TLDs to become crowded and .forum will be a ghost town.

Forums generally don't make money. Any forum making money, probably isn't making enough to budget $500 extra in another domain. Any company that would say "wow, $2000/year is acceptable" would already have something like {forum,community}.acme.com.

This is awesome, I'll probably try it out soon.

My primary use case is that I don't want my end user(s) to know the IP address of my core application.

But, the option to pay someone other than AWS/GoogleCloud and then have to write my own lambdas is also a plus.

Something similar, but for "fetch metadata on this URL" (tags, description, title, etc), version 2 of that being support for when the end target is an SPA, or also a "take a screenshot of this URL" would also be nice.

This is pretty cool. Is it opensource? What stack is it built with?

> Ruby 3 does static typing

Categorically, what I've seen of this falls closer to "lintable comments" than it does "actual static types". Static types are a foundational aspect of crystal, it's not like a sticker slapped on as an after thought.

Reality: Kotlin's value proposition is android development.
Re:Crystal 1.0 – What to expect on Tuesday March 23, 2021 @09:50AM (#26554933)
Sounds like a fair compromise when the alternatives includes at least one of the following tradeoffs: harder, less safe, and/or slower.
Re:Crystal 1.0 – What to expect on Tuesday March 23, 2021 @09:42AM (#26554842)
That doesn't stop 99% of the mind share and language design from being "Java with lipstick".

Agreed.

Re:Crystal 1.0 – What to expect on Tuesday March 23, 2021 @09:38AM (#26554802)
Crystal does a better job with making portable binaries. For example I have written an app that's a 20MB alpine docker container. A comparable app written in Elixir used an 800MB alpine docker container.

I think Elixir is one of crystal's top competitors, but only for servers. Probably you'd never leave Elixir to write a webserver in Crystal. That's just Erlang's specialty. You would leave golang, Ruby, python, PHP, etc. for crystal though, because of the type system, performance, threads, binary, etc..

I've actually started using crystal to write the kinds of scripts people would normally use python for, despite it not being a scripting language.

Re:The future of web software is HTML over WebSockets on Thursday February 25, 2021 @03:14PM (#26267667)
I feel like websockets get waaay too much hype and attention compared to SSE, especially for use cases that are barely interactive at all.

A similar list for free to use bootstrap 4/5 themes (like https://bootswatch.com/ but I already know about bootswatch) is in my wishlist.

Show HN: Webapp to Format SQL Queries for Readability

I wrote https://sql.greatenemy.com/ because I needed a quick way to make app generated SQL statements readable. None of the alternatives I could find quickly via search engine at the time included the following features: dark mode, small and fast, works offline, postgres first, not covered in ads.It is mostly a wrapper around npm's sql-formatterhttps://github.com/greatenemy/sql-sapper

Re:RBS, Ruby’s new type signature language on Thursday July 30, 2020 @01:35PM (#24000864)
This was my experience with typescript. Nothing I actually wanted to use had first class support for typescript. Nothing I settled with didn't have endless compiler errors that had more to do with the tsconfig than my actual types.

Then at the end of the day, it was still JavaScript (an interesting word for "not ruby"), but with types slapped on top.

I ended up switching to crystal, which is basically ruby + types (infered when possible, but I actually wanted the types) with the performance of golang.

Re:Named arguments are coming in PHP 8 on Thursday July 30, 2020 @08:33AM (#23997340)
Definitely a top feature of crystal lang. Not having to worry about what the default was to the second positional argument while using the third is satisfying, not to mention that it's basically optional self documenting, too.

Fix this easily by abstracting the manipulation of user uploaded files to chroot/serverless.

Re:Go vs. Crystal Performance on Wednesday June 24, 2020 @11:31AM (#23629050)
I'm hoping to put a side project into production soon, crystal the language is basically perfect, biggest issue is that I often have to write my own shards, but every shard I write is a shard someone else won't have to write and sometimes npm/gems can easily be converted. The performance and type system working in ecr templates gave me confidence that I could write a higher quality lowjs webapp with a better dev experience than my default stack, which was going to be an uphill battle getting typescript Frankenstein'd into vuejs with a backend in laravel or Frankensteining typescript into a nodejs library (I didnt find any typescript-first nodejs http webservers that I actually liked _and_ also didn't require infinite yakshaving just to get tsconfig, tests, vuejs SSR, etc. working).
I took the quote to imply possible categories like copagandists, white supremacists, Nazis, KKK, or even random apolitical opportunists, which is a distinction with a huge difference. After all, Trump did announce something like "Antifa did it" instantly after the riots started while law enforcement across the board has been struggling to find any evidence. It does smell like an astroturfed misinformation campaign intended to drown out criticisms of widespread systemic police brutality.
