News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

So I removed auth for the main page you login at and the links to tags. Everything else will require login. I think this was a great idea, I've been in my own bubble and yes, not everyone is just gonna login.
I think I can safely setup all the routes as unauthenticated except for the post pages (where you can comment) and create post pages pretty quickly.
I built this as something I needed for my portfolio, and to challenge myself as a developer with only 3 and a half years of experience. I know the code is kinda bad, but I also know I'm not a horrible dev, so I really wanted to learn as much as I could during this project.

I'm using auth0 for oauth, SSL, and express in my node middleware. I'm using Material UI and react-router for my frontend.

If anyone noticed I left client secrets, or finds a bunch of bugs, or just has general suggestions, I'd really appreciate getting sent them to [email protected].

I don't believe this argument for a second, with the ubiquitousness of successful Electron apps.

I understand that Electron apps tend to be a resource hog, but what other options for software create as many cross platform opportunities with as much work? I think for every single greedy developer/company there's another small software project only able to get off the ground because of the maximized opportunities. This is coming from a relatively new full time developer who's trying to get a small side project off the ground.

On the API docs, there's plenty of code examples and a caching feature which is awesome, but I wish the docs at https://stripe.com/docs/development could be cached like the API docs.

Anyone have suggestions for these?

The cooking thing really hits home. I work in a high stress, banking environment at a fortune 500 company, and I eat out most days. I know theoretically how to cook, but between the time it takes to shop, cook, and clean, AND I'm doing well financially it's so hard to convince myself to cook. Living alone doesn't help either.
Is this the result of a decreasing amount of patriotism across the US? Or maybe it's just money.

I especially feel this, my fiance is a biologist, we each have our own "language" we speak. I've learned more from him about communication than anyone else I've ever met!

I would invest in a pair of nice noise canceling headphones. They work wonders for me and are a must have in open offices.

My 11 year old brother trades stocks

Not sure if that's what they meant by free market

It seems so obvious now that the birth of Cyberpunk would come directly out of the counterculture movement in the 60s and 70s.

What if one used audio feedback while using soli, eg swiping made a literally swiping noise, turning your hand clicked every notch you turned on a volume slider.

Yarn is generally regarded as not necessary anymore: https://medium.com/@vincentnewkirk/npm-vs-yarn-2019-e88757b1...
It's not that I think I'm specifically different, I think that everyone "thinks" differently, and I incorrectly assumed everyone thinks like that.

While hooks are generally regarded as faster, classes are actually much closer than previously though. But they still get beat out in the benchmarks: https://medium.com/@dan_abramov/this-benchmark-is-indeed-fla...

Firebase was bought by Google, which while there hasn't been anything in the news regarding Firebase, Google still collects and shares data. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privacy_concerns_regarding_Goo...

Using yarn, without hooks, and giving Google even more data.
I see. I didn't really think about that, my line of thought has always been that there's no one like me so of course there's deep differences between how people think.

Is this where the "millennial snowflake" idea comes in?

I feel like this article is trying too hard. I've kept a journal with thoughts from the day for years.
