I'm not the organizer and was not asked to post this, but I've attended their events in the past and they are very thoughtful and well done. Nikhil, who runs Out of Pocket, is very reputable in the Healthcare/Healthtech world.
op here, thanks for the question! Yup, any old laptop will do the job, that's the point! But by installing this as the OS essentially, kids can have ownership over the machine. As for why it's not good enough for adults: old computers don't always run new software very well, but Ubuntu + TUI = very smooth.
Author here. I'm curious whether other parents would actually want something like this. It’s intentionally very opinionated: no desktop, no browser, no apps, just boots straight in. I don’t know if that constraint feels freeing or limiting to others.

Distribution is the biggest open question for me. Right now it’s just an ISO you flash yourself, but I’m experimenting with mailing pre-flashed USB drives. I've also thought about preloading old laptops, though that adds a lot of overhead.

I'm also very open to technical feedback around the input layer (evdev for true key-down/key-up, sticky shift, double-tap caps) and the paint-style color mixing, or anything else. Thank you!

Hey HN, I'm Tavi. I built this for my 4-year-old.He and I used to "computer code" together in IPython: typing words to see emojis, mixing colors, making sounds. Eventually he wanted his own computer. So I took an old laptop and made him one. That IPython session evolved into Explore mode, a REPL where kids type things and something always happens: "cat * 5" shows five cats, "red + blue" mixes...

Ask HN: Best OSS for custom form builder within multi-tenant SaaS application?

I am building a multi-tenant SaaS (CRM) for a small non-profit niche. Custom form building will be a critical piece for my customers. Forms will be used for e.g. event registrations, donations, volunteer coordination, food orders, seat assignments for fundraisers, accepting payment from credit cards/Venmo/ACH/etc. Admins for each tenant will be creating different sets of forms.I wonder if I can...

Absolutely not a dick move, regardless of the status of projects. Raising rates is part of contracting. Once they know your value, you're in a great position to ask for a significant rate increase. I have no context so take this with a grain of salt, but I'd ask for the $100 that you wanted initially; the fact that they didn't accept that rate 6 months ago does not mean they wouldn't accept that (or more) now that they know you.

As gostsamo wrote, ask if they're interested in continuing. If they are, here's an example of what you could say next: "I've really enjoyed working with you and I'd love to continue. I'd be most comfortable with $100/hr. Would you consider that at this point?"

I run Sequence Software, a Los Angeles-based software development, data analytics and bioinformatics consultancy focused on healthcare and genomics. Sequence Software is currently just me, and my clients are mostly small pharma companies focused on cancer immunotherapy. In general, I work with biotech companies to brainstorm and build web apps, bioinformatics pipelines, predictive models, and so on.

Always excited to talk to folks working in biotech/healthcare, whether or not that results in a consulting engagement.

I would caution you to only go for that type of reduced salary arrangement as a last resort. 2 years out is very different from a decade, and getting a job at market salary is probably well within your reach. A company so concerned that you might not meet the bar that they don't want to pay you what you're worth is also more likely to decide that you don’t, in fact, meet the bar.
Welcome back! Sounds like it was very worthwhile. I did something similar a few years back and felt similarly out of the loop.

What worked for me was briefly brushing up on my data structures and algorithms, and then bombing several interviews. After eventually not bombing a few real interviews, I felt like I was back in the game.

On a resume, I would list your time as a sabbatical if you did no coding during that time, and I wouldn't give it more than a sentence of space. If you did even a little coding, I would focus more on what you coded.

Your decision to travel doesn't mean that your career is in trouble! You may or may not run into obstacles finding work during this time. Just be sure to prepare for a possibly lengthy process.
