Re:Symbiosis of Docker and Perl [video] on Saturday November 26, 2016 @01:14PM (#13045050)
I'm surprised people still think of Perl like this. You realize Perl is being used by major sites such as imdb, booking.com, and duckduckgo? Maybe try watching the video before making a critical comment.
I have been slowly migrating away from my gmail account and I intend to delete it very soon. I highly recommend Protonmail as an alternative web-based email provider.
Re:How to get started with DJing on Friday November 25, 2016 @12:56AM (#13034648)
> Alternatively, you can spend 10 years in your bedroom learning how to be a really good music producer and hope some popular DJ signs your single and then gradually build a following and then maybe in five more years you might make what a junior sysadmin makes.

Or you could become a junior sysadmin right from the start and treat music production as a hobby with no intention of turning it into a career. Although, I have a feeling many young people wouldn't listen to advice like that.

Not sure about a toster, but there are benefits to having some household appliances connected to the internet. For example, a washing machine may be able to determine what hour it should operate for maximum energy savings, and ping you when finished. I guess a toaster could be similar; pre-loaded with bread so you could ask it to start toasting before getting up from the sofa.

> Consumers may find it totally cool to design images for toast using a smartphone. Meantime, the resulting data would help food companies understand how people approach breakfast, design new products and market to consumers more effectively.

Re:Amazon RDS now supports PostgreSQL 9.6.1 on Tuesday November 15, 2016 @08:46AM (#12957889)
It depends on the type of application and the requirements and expectations of its users. I wouldn't recommend having a web app talk to its database over a WAN, for example. Unless it had a decent caching layer in between.
Re:Whatsapp: Video Calling on Tuesday November 15, 2016 @07:40AM (#12957498)
But you are part of a very tiny proportion of users smart enough to realize this. And it doesn't address the issue of someone sending private (or incriminating) messages to you, which would still link you as a "person of interest". If I send you a message containing the word "bomb", for example, that could get both our accounts flagged.

> It's odd, the world is the safest and most stable that it has ever been.

Tell that to Mother Earth, who is about to show us all who is boss. Climate change is much worse than most people realise.

You may also be unaware of what is going on in Syria, and the fact that NATO has ordered the deployment of thousands of troops to Eastern Europe to put pressure on Russia, a nuclear-armed country.

Re:Pornhub Bypasses Ad Blockers with WebSockets on Thursday November 03, 2016 @07:52AM (#12863189)
Well said. It's why I have no respect for people who work in the porn industry, however successful they may be.
Re:Japan home to 541,000 young recluses on Wednesday September 07, 2016 @09:50PM (#12449622)
Why is this a problem? What's wrong with living a reclusive life, if that's what you want to do?

I live alone and don't go outside unless I have to buy food. I work online, and make electronic music and play video games when I'm not working. It's how I choose to live my life and don't see anything wrong with it.

Re:Make Dope Beats with ReactJS on Monday August 22, 2016 @04:01PM (#12338998)
I'm interested in this and I have bookmarked it to try out some time.

Maybe in the not-too-distant future the days of standalone audio software will be gone and everything will be run in a web browser. This would solve all the piracy problems, no need to update ever, and no compatibility issues.

I never tried the hardware MPCs, but I recently splashed out on an MPC Touch and I'm having a great time with it.

Re:Ask HN: Have you launched a failed web business? on Saturday August 13, 2016 @12:13PM (#12281970)
I spent years making a website/webapp similar to metacritic, which aggregated new releases of new movies, games, apps etc, except the data was crowd-sourced, like wikipedia. It worked great and looked good. However, it never made more than a blip on the internet. It stuck around page 10 of google and I couldn't get any visiblity for it. And without being able to build a community it would never work so I had to pull the plug, which was very depressing. I wasted a large amount of my life working on that.
Re:Stop Treating Marijuana Like Heroin on Saturday August 13, 2016 @11:58AM (#12281913)
I've got high almost daily for the past 15 years. I'm also a programmer and I am proud of what I have accomplished. A year ago I quit smoking and started preparing and eating edibles instead. This was for health reasons but another benefit is that I am now able to dose myself much more precisely. There is a level which improves my productivity and focus, where I really feel in the zone. Sometimes when I am trying to solve a difficult problem, getting high helps me to break through.
Re:Indie Hackers: Learn how developers are making money on Thursday August 11, 2016 @01:49PM (#12270301)
Nice site, I enjoyed reading it.

I like the effect when transitioning from grid view to list view. Is that just CSS or is there some Javascript magic doing that?

The residents will not get any compensation. That's just the way it works in Spain.
Re:JQuery++ on Friday August 05, 2016 @11:24AM (#12233005)
That depends on whether the Promise specification gets cancellations. I like fetch's clean API, but being able to cancel my ajax requests is essential.
Re:JQuery++ on Friday August 05, 2016 @11:18AM (#12232953)
One reason I still use jQuery is because its ajax() API is much nicer than the XMLHttpRequest API.

Edit: another reason: slideUp() / slideDown() are very useful and not easy to implement with native code.

Re:How Dirty Is Your Air? on Wednesday June 01, 2016 @07:39PM (#11819225)
I was looking at this a few days ago http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/AC3256_30/3000-series-air-clean...

It has good reviews on Amazon, but it's not cheap.

Re:Learn Docker by building a Microservice on Wednesday June 01, 2016 @01:11PM (#11816155)
I run my production database in a container, even if it has its own dedicated server. It's nice being able to install, start and initialize the database with a simple docker command or two to get a consistent build, instead of manually setting it up (copying/editing configuration files, deploying schemas, initializing data, setting permissions, etc.) And it makes upgrading the database very easy. Having this process automated and in source control is great. I also have the awesome ability to bundle cron in my database container to schedule regular backups. Persisting data is as simple as mounting a data volume.
I still use Fireworks (CS6 on Windows). It does the job.
Re:SS7 MITM Attack Against WhatsApp and Telegram on Tuesday May 10, 2016 @06:44PM (#11671284)
It's not broken. People keep echoing that accusation but nobody has ever provided a valid source.
