I have also a weird story to tell that a human did and it is as crazy as this. It happen in 2019 so no LLMs at all.

A person that was hired as an expert in our startup spent more than one week full time working on implementing his solution to the problem we were having. I checked the code after one week to see the progress and was curious how they are implementing an already crazy sounding idea. I found that the whole week was spent re-implementing in python, python's built-in "float" function. That was it, the whole code was just that.

Our problem was related to financial services and their implementation of "float" was not even correct.

Re:The New AI Superpowers: Focus and Followthrough on Monday July 27, 2026 @06:14AM (#49067419)
But AI is only able to get you through those already easy first 90-99%. The hard and most time-consuming part of getting to 100% is still there, and AI does not help or make us more productive achieving that, in my opinion.
The iPhone was the only smartphone in 2007, and the one that they could track based on AT&T coverage.
Every person after taking just one 101 statistics course tells everyone "correlation doesn't equal causation". But here, in the abstract is clear:

> National-survey evidence on time use and sexual behavior is consistent with the iPhone reducing in-person interactions, increasing pornography use, and reducing sexual frequency.

Not every rich person got an iPhone. The rich people without an iPhone did not had equal amount of less kids. There are two groups, one has an iPhone, the other has not. The assumption is that two groups are big enough to have equal amount of people from any other group that can explain the decline in fertility, i.e. equal amount of rich/poor, educated, etc. They can control for this because they know which people had access to the iphone based on the AT&T network coverage.

At the end of the abstract they state the likely explanation of this seemingly spurious correlation: > National-survey evidence on time use and sexual behavior is consistent with the iPhone reducing in-person interactions, increasing pornography use, and reducing sexual frequency.

It has a lot clearer explanation of the method than Google's own post.

You can try it with your own recorded video. I record myself doing exercises and Gemini gives me really good feedback on my form.

"A4 paper sheet-sized ceramic film could hold more than 2 TB of data" Just 2 TB? Makes you appreciate just how much 2 TB of data is.

Also, what's the point of "storing our future" if it is so difficult to read and decode? How would one even know where to look for the data if it's get lost. So besides doing it for fun I don't see the point of this and how it can be ever scaled to be in everyday use.

Perhaps is intentionally, to allude to the multithreaded nature of free-threaded Python.

Off-topic, but anyone knows where to buy such [1] old but not rare (so they are cheap enough) math books? In UK and globally? Is e-bay and perhaps amazon the best place? How to avoid fakes?

Re:Bitcoin price hits $100K for first time in history on Friday December 06, 2024 @11:00AM (#42340955)
Like FooBarBizBazz says below. One can buy and sell multiple options at the same time such that the trade overall makes money if the price stays within a range or (with a different set of option trades) makes money if the price goes outside a range, regardless if it is up or down. Search for straddle and strangle options. Option trading for Bitcoin and all major crypto currencies is possible and it is where the majority of trading happens.
Exactly! You make all the points. Nothing more left to say.

One can make money predicting volatility.

Exactly! Many motions in nature can be modeled as either Brownian motion or Lévy flight.
Re:Writing by hand is still the best way to retain information on Thursday November 24, 2022 @12:02AM (#33727951)
Not an eink tablet, but Samsung Notes app on Samsung tablets do exactly this. It lets you search your handwriting without converting the handwriting into text first.
Great post, such a clear writing style. Farewell Kite!

First time hearing about Krita, but I am amazed at how good it is. Paying $40 for Acorn 7 seems foolish now...
calories in, calories out
It says caloric restriction without malnutrition. Eating 15% less carb and fat calories won't make you loose any more muscle mass than you would have otherwise.

But I am wondering my self too, what's the effect when you combine CR with exercise. 15% out of 2000 calories is 300 cal or about 30 mins jogging. So instead of eating less, will the effect be similar if I spend 300 cal more everyday through exercise?

Re:Earth-like planet spotted orbiting Sun’s closest star on Friday February 11, 2022 @06:21AM (#30300097)
Just for reference, the planet is 4.0×10^13 kilometres away, if we send our fastest ever probe, and assume it averages the top speed of 586,800 km/h all the way there, it will still take 7,781 years to reach the planet.
I wonder how it compares to Google's "Learned Index Structures" https://arxiv.org/abs/1712.01208
Re:Closest Temperate World Orbiting Quiet Star Discovered on Wednesday November 15, 2017 @10:55PM (#15710159)
I expect we would find life on another planet within 50 years. But, it would take a lot longer to find or be found by an intelligent life.

No. That is not how it works. Read the papers again.
As a foreigner living for 2 years in Singapore and coming from an unstable country I can say that Singaporeans have more freedom than any other citizens in the world. Like Mr. Calvin Cheng says:

"I tell you what freedom is.

Freedom is being able to walk on the streets unmolested in the wee hours in the morning, to be able to leave one's door open and not fear that one would be burgled. Freedom is the woman who can ride buses and trains alone; freedom is not having to avoid certain subway stations after night falls. Freedom is knowing our children can go to school without fear of drugs, or being mowed down by some insane person with a gun. Freedom is knowing that we are not bound by our class, our race, our religion, and we can excel for the individuals that we are - the freedom to accomplish. Freedom is living in one of the least corrupt societies in the world, knowing that our ability to get things done is not going to be limited by our ability to pay someone. Freedom is fresh air and clean streets, because nothing is more inimical to our liberty of movement than being trapped at home because of suffocating smog.

These are the freedoms that Singaporeans have, freedoms that were built on the vision and hard work of Mr Lee, our first Prime Minister. And we have all of these, these liberties, while also being one of the richest countries in the world."
