Re:SaaS Is Dead on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @08:16AM (#50179635)
This. So many of the matches are wrong. I’ve also tried a lot of these tools and they’re immature. I hate the SaaS model for consumer software but at least most hold a quality bar I can trust.
Re:DeepSeek: DeepSeek v4.1 Flash 1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:19AM (#50130926)
To be fair, east and west are in relation to England, not the US.

Trump’s a smelly orange shit but the US at least pretends to have data privacy protections and we can’t legally compel companies to have back doors… yet. I think. It’s very hard to keep up with all the nonsense these days.

Re:DeepSeek: DeepSeek v4.1 Flash 1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:16AM (#50130905)
If you pay for a business plan on openrouter (I know, it’s not opencode, just another option), you can geo lock providers if China is a concern.
Re:DeepSeek: DeepSeek v4.1 Flash 1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:13AM (#50130882)
Agreed.

It doesn’t have to be better, it just had to be nearly equivalent. I’ve been doing a lot of vulnerability work lately (trying to get ahead of the bots finding exploits in our code) and the frontier models feel like a chaperone at a church dance: get too close and they show up with the ruler and enforce the safety margin. Using deepseek and glm and qwen, I’ve gotten nearly equivalent results without the constraints. I still use frontier models for things but outside of a company environment, I’m happy to spend 1/10 the money, get the same results, and not have try and trick the AI into working.

Did we make it all the way up to average?! Good for us!
Re:Ask HN: Why aren't Americans rising up against tipping? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:33PM (#50038955)
Been to Taco Bell lately?
Re:Ask HN: Why aren't Americans rising up against tipping? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:32PM (#50038947)
No, she can’t. Cleaning staff ware not hard to find. Cleaning jobs for fair wages are. Our economy works because we negotiate the cheapest labor we can for the highest output. Tech isn’t even different. We give options to people in lieu of cash on the hopeful promise that we’re gonna blow up and be work silly money. When was the last time you worked an unskilled labor job?
Re:Ask HN: Why aren't Americans rising up against tipping? on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:28PM (#50038933)
The only reasonable stand is to advocate for living wages but we’ll never do that in numbers strong enough for it to happen. Tipping has gotten out of hand but so has the cost of living.
Re:My personal AI agent posted my bank details on company Slack on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:25PM (#50038918)
This article screams “I’m a good target for spear phishing.”
Re:My personal AI agent posted my bank details on company Slack on Saturday October 10, 2026 @09:24PM (#50038908)
My _personal_ AI bot was also connected to the _company_ Slack.

Didn’t need to vibe scribble a whole post to make the key point. Do what you do with your bots but keep them separate. Did AI make you forget the last 30 years of common sense?

Re:Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society? on Monday September 28, 2026 @11:18AM (#49879438)
That is a problem but it’s definitely not the root. The root is our increasingly high tolerance for violence, especially in schools. We should also stop shying away from the gendered aspects of the thing: this is done by boys and men FAR more than girls and women. We just don’t like to talk about it.

We need to address violent tendencies in males and our ludicrous willingness to not see the reality of it.

File a feature request! ;)
Re:Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests on Sunday September 27, 2026 @12:16PM (#49868045)
Check out floci-az. I haven’t touched it but I know it’s there.
Re:Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests on Sunday September 27, 2026 @12:15PM (#49868037)
You’d think that but it doesn’t seem to be the case. I do a lot of offline development and the only way it used to be possible was localstack but that’s AWS only. The open source community is the only interested party, it seems. Thankfully, there’s a lot of contribution happening in this space. Because I have need, I make a lot of my own contributions. I’m doing full stack cloud development against GCP without ever leaving my device.
Re:Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests on Sunday September 27, 2026 @10:00AM (#49866717)
I use tf with floci and floci-gcp, weekly…
Re:Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests on Sunday September 27, 2026 @09:59AM (#49866706)
Yeah. Stupid really didn’t want to type that. :)
Re:Fakecloud: Local AWS cloud emulator for integration tests on Sunday September 27, 2026 @09:33AM (#49866538)
But how does it compare to floci, which already picked up with localstack left off?
Every one of their models has become absolutely useless, for validation of bugs and the remediations. Unless I’m doing straight forward dev work, I’ve turned to alternate models and harnesses I’ve started building on my own. The frontier models have apparently become so good at security that they can’t be bothered to discuss it with laymen…
Re:Protobuf has LSP support. You're welcome on Monday August 17, 2026 @09:43AM (#49330732)
Sounds like a you problem. If someone did me a service and told me I was welcome, my take would be entirely based on the delivery of the phrase. I don’t even know what to do with the gum analogy because that’s just nonsense.
Not if the funding is blocked.
Can you be sure Google’s ${anything} will be around in 6 months? They have a decades long habit of dumping things that have major use but aren’t novel internally. Worrying about the next 10 years isn’t something you can honestly do when you your argument includes Google owning a thing.

Bias: I fought for things like Reader from the inside. If it doesn’t move needles, it goes away.

I don’t know the appropriate way to celebrate this but I most definitely will. If there’s a hell, he’s going to find out what it means. (I don’t believe there is a hell.)
AI has helped us all lose the plot because now we don’t just know better than everyone else, we can prove it by project managing our better versions of the same things.

What I find really great is that we’re only a prompt or two away from proper docs for these novel solutions but we still don’t make them and if we do, we definitely don’t read them first.

Yes.

Re: on Tuesday May 20, 2025 @06:43AM (#44039996)
I’m surprised no one has mentioned pdsh yet. Piped to dshbak and output was grouped by response. I’d probably use a config management tool for anything more than simple commands now but that tool was indispensable for managing our fleet, when we used to actually connect to machines.

Re:xAI has acquired X, xAI now valued at $80B on Saturday March 29, 2025 @08:27AM (#43514992)
It’s actually more, right? Because it’s $33b+$12b of debt, which means he’s saying it’s worth $45b.
