Re:Did Automattic commit open source theft? on Saturday October 19, 2024 @02:10PM (#41889472)
This seems like a pretty damning indictment of Automattic. The WordPress foundation (that they presumably set up) may have rules that give them legal cover for some of the moves they’re making, but it’s going to hurt them in the court of public opinion. I think that matters to developers, who are the people ultimately responsible for choosing whether or not to contribute to / use their product. It’s true that migration cost might prevent churn from these actions right now but stopping the train of logic there seems short sighted. What about all the business that they may have received in the future that they might not get now because they’ve tarnished their brand?
Re:The Weird Nerd comes with trade-offs on Sunday June 09, 2024 @11:57AM (#40625322)
I read the article as acknowledging this pressure by arguing that Weird Nerds should not be forced into people management positions. Without the workplace pressure on Weird Nerds to become people managers, would they still manage people? Maybe not.

I can’t speak for academia, but in tech companies I’ve worked at I’ve seen a marked improvement in management when there’s a tech track for engineer advancement such that they never need to become managers, if they don’t want.

Ask HN: Is it safe to update to macOS Catalina (10.15.3)?

When Catalina first came out, HN was flooded with articles about how bad it was. Now, a few weeks later, is it safe to update my mac? I've backed up everything, but would still hate to have my personal laptop performing on a subpar level when I need it for photoshop, iterm2, xcode, firefox, etc.

Thanks for the heads up! I was just about to update. Didn’t see anything about the 32/64 bit thing in the update release..

I'm just learning Go now and I'm still in the middle of the whole "Go solves concurrency" part. It's nice to get a second opinion

It gratifys me in some weird way to know that companies stress out about the recruitment process at least as much as I do
Are the current fads not still agile, scrum, and lean?
Feels like the headline here should be related to bug itself, the amount of privacy it violated, and how long it took Apple to fix it!

Clearly a good PR move for Apple.

Re:Google is buying Fossil’s smartwatch tech for $40M on Friday January 18, 2019 @12:12PM (#18940779)
Hopefully this means that my Fossil Q Wander is going to be on the cutting edge of Google's software updates now. Big fan of this watch by the way, only complaint is that it doesn't led itself to workouts as well as some other watches.
Re:Ask HN: How do you organize everything you want to do? on Saturday January 12, 2019 @02:24PM (#18892818)
I've also gone through several iterations including text files, excel and google sheets. My latest approach (and personal favorite) has been the GTD approach with Trello detailed here: https://blog.trello.com/gtd-getting-things-done-maximizing-p...
Love to see people trying to make topics in math and cs more accessible to a wider audience
Re:Absolute Beginner's Guide to Emacs (2012) on Tuesday December 04, 2018 @04:31PM (#18603767)
I've been using Sublime since I started and have no complaints. That being said I always hear about emacs referred to as the OG. I know there's positives and negatives to both, but is there any pressing reason to switch from one to the other?
Googling it comes up with a bunch of calculators to generate time and cost of project, but I don't know how much I'd trust them.. Honestly seems like it comes down mostly to trial and error, and understanding your own process when deciding how long a project might take / cost.
Re:Ask HN: How does HN handle trolls? on Wednesday June 13, 2018 @11:17AM (#17303879)
Here's what the guidelines say:

"Please don't complain that a submission is inappropriate. If a story is spam or off-topic, flag it. Don't feed egregious comments by replying; flag them instead. If you flag something, please don't also comment that you did.

Please don't use Hacker News primarily for political or ideological battle. This destroys intellectual curiosity, so we ban accounts that do it."

Re:Twitter Soars After Surprise Sales Gain, First Real Profit on Thursday February 08, 2018 @02:16PM (#16334718)
So Twitter has finally given up on building for the avg person and begun creating more tools to make life easier for advertisers (ie big money) and they're suddenly more profitable. Shocker!!
Re:How to Beat Amazon on Tuesday January 30, 2018 @06:30PM (#16270085)
tldr: the only chance you've got to beat Amazon when building a consumer brand is selling a premium product to a specific niche

> Amazon and Goodreads ratings, and numerous online book-reviewing sites, have all contributed to and reflected the democratization of the arbitration of literary taste. But such democratization is not intrinsically a good thing.

It hadn't occurred to me before this article but after thinking about it I do depend upon Amazon/Goodreads ratings in large portion when choosing my next book.. Upon re-examination I think I'm going to factor in more book critics' opinions into my selection process.

The Apple Face ID hack could have long-term ramifications, no? Especially with anybody who doesn't read these articles believing the system to be completely secure.
If the kid is too shy to ask for help or has been taught never to talk to strangers, then they would never even attempt to approach a stranger. Seems like that's the main difference: that Japanese children are taught to trust the community they live in.
Re:The World Might Be Better Off Without College for Everyone on Friday December 08, 2017 @05:49AM (#15877909)
I read this and it seems to make a lot of good points..However, I'm not sure if the fact that I'm reading this at 2am instead of studying for my Spanish and Discrete Math exams validates or discredits the argument. I plan to review it again in a week when I can think straight.
Re:How to read 100 books a year (and still have a life) on Monday December 04, 2017 @01:12PM (#15846046)
...yea if your goal is about a quantity of books and doesn't include some qualitative goal how do you ensure that you are fully absorbing each book and not just racing through them without learning anything.
Re:Books I read this year on Monday December 04, 2017 @01:05PM (#15845983)
I really appreciate the fact that he continues to put out reading lists. I believe that people are more motivated to read after finding out out Bill Gates reads a lot bc people want to emulate him (and his success).

More people reading is obviously only a good thing if you believe that reading is a good habit for people to have bc it exposes you to different arguments, opinions and ideas. I do think that reading is a net good. If you don't I'm interested to hear why.
