I wonder how long it will take for someone to get rich enough to be able to send their own private interstellar space missions. America's super wealthy are getting very rich. At this rate we will have multiple people with a trillion dollars by the end of the century. What is stopping someone from building and launching interstellar probes instead of buying another few super yachts.

Have to remind myself every time that the bright headlights would actually make me blind instead of flashing for a second.
Re:Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright

My guess is that the average population of car drivers is aging. With age comes worse eyesight and and the ability to see in the dark. So a lot of people are probably more comfortable with having brighter headlights.

I feel like this begs another question. If there are proven approaches and well established practices of professionals how good would chatgpt be in that profession? After all chstgpt has a vast knowledge base and probably knows a good amount of textbooks on psychology. Then again actually performing the profession probably takes skil and experience chatgpt can't learn.

Yeah I had a few servers look up on me without any clear way to recovery because some app was eating up ram. I am ok with the server coming to a crawl as soon as the swap has to be used but at least it won't stop responding all together.

You only need to defend the easy to reach parts. So the base and the cargo pod. To hit the upper parts you need advanced rockets and targeting systems.
Re:Space Elevator
on Monday October 20, 2025 @06:46AM (#45642412)
The issue of the line falling back to earth is solved by putting the base of the elevator on water. If the top part of the elevator was cut of you could even detonate charges along the line to make sure all pieces fall into water.

The page takes about two different programs. The first section only talks about benefits like LAN parties and tournaments as part of your 'Ausbildung' or training. The scholarship can apply if you work for them part time. Looks like it's primarily a recruitment tactic.

Yes. German car makers have been very dependent on the Chinese market to sell their cars too. Now that China is pushing for domestic electric vehicles, German car makers are falling behind.

Total energy need is not equal to total electricity need. And electricity is a lot more expensive then heating energy. So the cost savings can still be significant.
Re:Solar leads EU electricity generation as renewables hit 54%

I heard a few years ago that China was building up to two new coal power plants every week causing huge amounts of pollution. Looks like they still do. Yes they scale up renewable energy but what good is that if fossil fuel power generation scales at the same rate. At least with the EU and the US you can see a trend of moving from fossil fuels to renewable.
Re:AI coding made me faster, but I can't code to music anymore

My theory as a none scientist is that you need a different part of the brain to think about AI prompts compared to coding yourself. Or maybe that whatever though process you need for coding intersects with the part that enjoys listening to music. And because of that intersection you can't focus on both at the same time.

Maybe the issue is that people assume that a randomly selected population would consist of US citizens. What if you picked Japanese? They did well during covid. An they are know for having a strong communal responsibility. Maybe the average US citizen is just a bad choice for a generation ship? Then again given the choice between sending foreign citizen's or sending no generation ship would probably result in no generation ship bring launched.

I don't see why smaller societies should not be able to thrive. My grandparents said once that back in the day you could identify what rural village someone was from by their accent. Meaning populations inside of villages changed very little. And most of these villages did just fine with populations as low as 200.

What makes people think that the future advances in AI will continue to be linear instead of falling of and plateau? Don't all breakthrough technologies develop quickly at the start and then fall of in improvements as all the 'easy' improvements have already been made? In my opinion AI and AGI is like the car and the flying car. People saw continous improvements in cars and thought this rate of progress would continue indefinitely. Leading to cars that have the ability to not only drive but fly as well.

I know in our university pretty much everyone that attends exams uses chatgpt to study. Chatgpt is arguably more valuable then Wikipedia and Google for studies.

And over time take up more and more views.

I remember a Node.js library I worked on completely broke after a Node.js security update disabled a encyption feature. I don't think anyone could come up with a tangible exploit chain but the Node.js maintainers made the breaking change anyway because of the CVE. There was maybe one guy bringing attention to the CVE and 20 or so more people complaining about broken production applications. I wonder at what point people give up on CVE notices and just don't update for security patches when the majority of CVE reports are bogus anyway. I know the Node.js library we work with had about 10 security notices on npm audit. But none of them compromise the libraries security in any way. People still try to remedy them with npm audit fix but that just causes there dependencies to break completely.
