My gut is telling me it's "belonging".

I think the state of affairs on the moderation side is a lot more banal than you allege. But that doesn't preclude the likelihood of there being bots, shills and propagandists active.

My general gripe with the level of discourse here isn't necessarily topical as much it is based on my impression that the community has reached some sort of Dunning-Kruger-Dunbar number where the threshold of people knowledgeable in some areas who engage in curious debate in other areas has been breached by people who think the purpose of the site is winning arguments/handwringing and other nefarious actors.

The turn from your initial comment to this was about as abrupt as Hulk Hogan's in 1996.
Re:AlpineBSD on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:53PM (#50282611)
It's apparent that AlpineBSD is meant to support some idiosyncrasies that NetBSD isn't guaranteed to accommodate.

To start a community.

This would be useful. As of right now it looks like HN is leaving that sort of analysis up to its users. Which is fine. But if this is going to be the case then a coordinated effort is necessary to help spring the mods to action.

Re:Websites Should Be Printable on Monday October 26, 2026 @08:59AM (#50242852)
Printing a web page (or a PDF) is not unreasonable provided the content is two pages or more and it's something that invites itself to depth and close reading or some sort of value like ordinary print.

Your everyday blog is not worth the cost or effort. Nor is a Wikipedia entry.

HN has reached its "elder game" stage [0].

Established public figures here know how to play it. Everyone else either uses it as a temporary means for virality or are just here to hotbox the forum while it still stands.

In the meantime I hope your filter turns into something you think is worth making public. I have a 'concept of a plan' for an alternative but it would take some time and would not be a Show HN.

I agree. The responses you're receiving here are indicative. But it would help if you included some evidence of your own and a call to action.

Here's a past approach that proved successful for some time: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4102013

Software is in its SoundCloud rap era.

There’s no Power Broker in the city to keep the irons hot.

This offers an interesting glimpse into the dynamics of a changing world…
Name checks out. This is awesome.
Those can very well be common palindromes just pulled from the web. I know the last line is very common.
Mute Mic does not toggle in Safari on iOS for me.

Use cases is essentially for medium-sized lectures. Only one or two people should be speaking at a given moment on these occasions.

All in all, I just like seeing a straightforward web app like this. Glad to help.

I never thought of that. That would definitely put a spoil on common access to digital information in the long term. Perhaps it could even bifurcate the Web in the way that‘s been entertained before: a separate Web document environment and a separate Web application environment.
This is cool. I’m in mobile. My phone has a grayscale display. There doesn’t appear to be anything that shows me whether my mic is muted or not when I press “Mute Mic” nor is there anything that indicated whether my connection is reset when I press the corresponding button.

If this could accommodate around 8 people or so and I had a reason to trust that the communications were secure, I’d have immediate use for it.

It’s Nice though! And the stack sounds cool.

This is an exciting time, but also topically exhausting. I can see how past generations of technological change may have taken being in the midst of it all for granted in between the hype and the volley of takes for and against the latest groundbreaking innovation of the time.

Side note: I’m looking forward to a viable OpenAI competitor to come along and introduce their own chatbot…right now all of the speculation in the LLM area of AI are concentrated to the work of one company…what else can be out there?

Re:The End of Front-End Development on Monday March 20, 2023 @04:13PM (#35237921)
Elaborate, please. This is a new take to me.
He should share the entire chat.
College stinks, but what will happen to “blue collar” young people who do not make it into the “white collar” apprenticeship pipeline, who would have previously achieved so through college. Oh yeah, well they can just choose college. But as this apprenticeship thing becomes more popular, what will the competition be like?

Young people! The labor market is turtling…what are we going to do?

Edit: I’m choosing a more tasteful description for the American labor market. Thank you for expressing your distaste with the original one.

This was a delightful read. I wonder what the consequences will be

Ask HN: Online Writers Under 30?

At first I was going to ask for “bloggers” under 30, because I’m really interested in seeing if there are any young people who have garnered a following through their own personal websites, but I suspect that to be kind of a rarity. I’ll settle also for anyone under 30 with a relatively popular Substack, or account on the Fediverse, or stuff like that.Just please, no Twitter-ers.But if you know...

The end is not unlike the beginning, in that it has been written to exactitude. “The pen has been lifted and the ink is dried”.
