Wow you described exactly what I'm starting to feel in my late 20s. Especially the point about neurotic feedback loops.
What do you mean legalized? Was it not legal before?
I would say you have 2 reliable options, either to join various club or then (and this may get a lot of hate here) to rush a fraternity/sorority. It’s a pretty well structured way to funnel yourself into friendships. Yes it has its cons but it’s not unheard of to be more inactive senior year so think of it as a 1-2 year experience.
I believe The Trade Desk is the alternative ads exchange platform to Google and Facebook. But I agree, we need more.
I generally agree that this is probably the fate for many American cities, but NYC seems to be in a league of its own compared to the other cities in North America. I feel like a better comparison is something like London, Rome, Mumbai, Beijing. These are cultural epicenters that are more resilient (but not immune) to economic downturns. Yes things might get tough for a bit but they're the place you want a multi bullion dollar investment to live when the goings get tough.
Respectfully, what is there not to understand? They’re expanding their footprint in NYC due to increased demand. I’ve heard here and there that headcount at Google NYC has always been tight, so this should alleviate some of that. Facebook and Amazon have also committed to massive leases in NYC within the past few years as well.
Besides that, these companies wield so much cash it seems like a safe bet to park a couple billion in. NYC real estate is arguably one of the safest bets in the modern era
I also generally agree with this but I think it's area dependent. Living close to a major metro, there have been very few rides where I can genuinely say that I did not at one point almost get hit by another vehicle, but I can imagine it being much safer in a rural area.
not sure about most but maybe somewhere between decently and generally productive participants compared to the rest of the nation
Did you first SaaS project work out? Are doing your own thing now?
Can you elaborate more? I understand that they didn’t invent memetic desire (no one did it’s a innate human behavior from girard pov) but don’t understand the second portion of your comment
I read this article and elaborated on the prompts while procrastinating from work and felt immediate relief which allowed me to finish up work for the day. What I’ve taken away from similar ideas is that if you treat yourself like an old friend and can break the cycle of mild to severe self hatred a lot of us procrastinators develop over the years, then it becomes easier to tackle harder tasks with more of a growth mindset which I think more productive or efficient people are able to do. In some ways it feels like the stakes are lowered and I can focus on the actual task instead of why the task won’t end.
What books would you recommend? Have similar not good enough feelings towards work.
Him becoming a PM for Google Maps seems surprising to me considering his entrepreneurial background, but I can’t deny I’ve also considered making the jump now and then from The dev life
I actually thought he was playing the meta game with palantir. His rhetoric of democracy is incompatible with freedom became famous around the time of the founding of Palantir. I viewed it as him attempting to reign as a philosopher-king-ceo steering the surveillance apparatus the US gov is contracting out as safely as he thought is possible.
Any recommendations on military history reads?
They're a newish company but not brand new. In my visit to china in 2019 I occasionally saw their SUV's in major cities and even visited a dealership. They've had several models in production prior to this car that have been well received and to me were quite impressive.
I’ve realized after building a small amount of competency in 2-3 narrow fields over the years how wrong most people are about those same topics online. Since becoming aware of this several years ago I’ve slowly limited my surfing to higher quality sites such as this one. I’ve always wondered how many completely incorrect beliefs I have about the world due to the compulsive surfing/reading of my younger years.
Isn’t that what a phone screen is like too? I’ve gotten some unexpected leetcode hards which without having have seen something similar before are difficult to solve “fresh”.
Wow you explained me to a tee. I never kept a full blown journal but it was something often discussed in my household. The later dream and wakefulness cycle you describe is something I’ve been trying to “fix” since it often leads to an extra several hour in bed.
The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York by Robert Caro is a fascinating take on how power and corruption can manifest in modern era.
Things Hidden Since The Foundation Of The World by Rene Girard explores through dialogues his theory of mimesis. Barely have made a dent into it and so am not sure if I’d recommend it yet but it’s had polarizing reviews.

Have an opportunity to provide input on my company's api documentation. What are some of your favorite examples of docs done well?
Can you link to that discussion?

Was wondering if anyone else felt this way. I tend to read a lot of nonfiction, mostly books and online articles. Books usually trend towards topics on sociology, economics, statistics, and politics. My online reading is usually within the rationalist blogosphere (SlateStarCodex, LessWrong, Melting Asphalt, Ribbonfarm etc.) and of course HN.Taking breaks from these readings tend to make me feel...
Usually for an API it indicates a breaking change. In this case the removal of some functions which might require refactoring on the consumers end.
Was gonna comment this as well.
During undergrad, I was only exposed to logic in my set theory and theory of computation classes. Any recommendations on good books/textbooks that are good for a relative beginners exploring set theory and type theory?
