VSCode with the platformIO plugin is pretty good
If you read his old blog posts from about 10 years ago he didn't reiterate anything. If you then read the comments on those posts you'll understand why he now does!
Re:64-Bit Bank Balances ‘Ought to Be Enough for Anybody’? on Tuesday September 19, 2023 @08:31AM (#37568997)
why add the complexity of bcd when you can just put in it units (e.g. cents) where there's no decimal point?
'The figures do not specify how people died, or whether the death was related to the care they were expecting from the NHS. The data also does not contain ages or medical conditions' This is a mischievous use of statistics

If an eighty year-old dies from a heart condition while waiting for an appointment at their local hearing clinic, they make this list

All this data really tells us is that the NHS is underfunded and badly managed, leading to backlogs and delays in treatment

Which is already obvious to everyone

Re:London house prices are having a relatively bad December on Monday December 12, 2016 @08:35AM (#13157906)
House prices in london have always been expensive. That 200k house in Earls Court adjusted for inflation would be £410k now.

But back in 1990 interest rates were a whopping 14% - that means that a 25 year mortage would have cost the equivelent of £4935 each month.

Today that house is worth 1.5 million. The same 25 year mortgage at today's interest rates would be £5158 a month.

So really house prices haven't changed that much, it's just that the money is going to different places.

It can simplify templates; allowing you to treat free functions and class methods the same way.

sounds very expensive, surely there must be a more efficient way?

How do you has words so that polynomial hashes to the same value as pollinomial?
The introduction of the smartphone has changed children for the worse. The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

Can someone explain how this link has made it to number one on the front page, when it seems from the comments that no one understands what the page is saying?

Re:Richest 1% to own more than rest of world, Oxfam says on Monday January 19, 2015 @11:19AM (#8912507)
I think this comes with lots of difficulties.

For example should you be evicted from your family farm that you've worked on your whole life when your 80 year old mother dies just because you haven't saved up enough money to buy it on the event of her death.

What if you are a subsistence farmer in Cambodia in the same situation - should you lose your family land to the state on the event of the death of your parents?

Re:Why a Dead Alkaline Battery Bounces [video] on Friday September 05, 2014 @07:21AM (#8273272)
It's probably not banned because someone who could take over a plane with a lithium battery could take over a plane without a lithium battery.
Re:Genderize.io determines the gender of a first name on Thursday August 08, 2013 @12:24PM (#6179917)
I haven't tried the api yet, but the example on the home page says that "Lois" is a female name - when in fact, in the 1930s it was quite a popular male name with about 70 boys born each year named lois. Checkout http://www.namemeababy.com to see the full stats.

Thanks for the feedback, the lack of Bort is due to (for privacy reasons) not having any names in the database for which fewer than 5 children have been given that name in any one year.
Re:Ask HN: What board game do you like? on Wednesday June 05, 2013 @09:55AM (#5825548)
For software developers, the ultimate game has to be roborally

You play cards to program your robot and drive it round a course.

Re:Have you settled on a Google Reader replacement? on Tuesday June 04, 2013 @11:26AM (#5819953)
The reason I use google reader is because it is best supported by iphone apps for offline reading. Does anyone know of any iphone apps that will allow me to read my rss feeds while underground?
Re:Introducing Feed Wrangler – Google Reader replacement on Tuesday April 30, 2013 @11:07AM (#5632590)
Not even a demo or a video, why is this better than any of the many free Google Reader replacements?

Re:Ask HN: Would a service like this make sense? on Thursday May 24, 2012 @09:15AM (#4018203)
I've always wanted a browser plugin like this that will flag if the website I'm currently on has comments on hn/reddit etc.
In all honesty, I'd just go ahead and do it yourself. It's easy mindless work. Put a movie on the tv, sit back with your laptop and just go at it. You'll get more done by the end of the film than you'd think.
I think it looks great!

In order for other people to start using it, it needs to look like it's being used. I think that you should create about a 100 users and add a few hundred products and comments. It'll take you a few hours of work, but it'll make the site appear to be much more successful, thus bringing in more users.

Ask HN: What do I need to do to complete my web app

My background is as a server side programmer, and am very new to web programming.I am just completing my first web app and am almost ready to launch it up onto the web. Is there a list of things I need to make sure I have before releasing? By this I mean things that you would not always think of such a robots.txt file, a favicon etc.

( Read More... | no comments | on HN )
A library that would allow you to share templates between the server and the client. The library would allow you to include a template file and render it on the client. It would allow you to also include the same file and render it on the server.
But that only helps the first person called John or Paul who signs up with you. I guess you have to weigh up helping the odd few first people who join your site, or disallowing names that don't look like usernames.
