Re:Nintendo announces Switch OLED Model on Tuesday July 06, 2021 @10:00PM (#27756575)
I hardly used them for a year, then I bought a new game and invited friends to play and now the buttons take multiple presses to register and the sticks drift.

No it's not latency, the controllers just don't work. The sticks drift and the buttons sometimes take multiple presses.
Sorry, just finally went back to research this lore. Are you sure you're right? It seems he went to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire https://www.popmartian.com/popnut/mcelwaine/7th-coming/obit....

If I'm playing Zelda or something, it's bearable because it's not too time sensitive and no one else is depending on me. If I'm playing Smash Bros then I just can't hit any combos and if I'm playing Overcooked then we are all letting each other down because we're running past and into each other.

The Switch controllers are so disappointing I doubt I'll ever buy another Nintendo product. Out of 4 Joycons and 3 Pro controllers, 1 pro controller is still fully functional.

They're ok for solo gaming, but anything multiplayer or especially cooperative is impossible.

Are you talking about Washington University in Saint Louis?
I live in a city with 95% adult vaccination (at least one dose) and the government has just announced that they are exploring how to open schools at an indeterminate date in the future.

If we can’t just go back to normal now, then why don’t we just give up?

Ask HN: Are there any industry best-practices for running user supplied code?

Our application needs to run plugins written by users. My general impression is "just use AWS Lambda", but I haven't found any articles by anyone authoritative who shares this opinion. Articles I've found by anyone not using Lambda describe a nest of VMs and containers that approximate Lambda with greater complexity, cost, and room to mess up.There's also the option to only run user code on user...

I don't think that's really relevant. In no world are people without medical treatment going to be considered, and no one is going to go through that just to win a medal.
If this is an issue for all MTF weightlifters, would it be reasonable to disqualify someone only if they had previously competed at the same level as a male?
Re:Ask HN: Are Dishwashing Machines Bullshit? on Tuesday June 22, 2021 @04:24AM (#27589270)
Maybe different parts of the country? I’d never seen one until I left the US.
Re:Ask HN: Are Dishwashing Machines Bullshit? on Tuesday June 22, 2021 @01:03AM (#27588166)
No idea about the knives, but a huge non-US innovation is a drying rack. Wash the dishes, let them dry, put them away when you have time. If I had to dry them with a rag, I think my opinion would be different.

Ask HN: Are Dishwashing Machines Bullshit?

When I was a kid, we had a dishwashing machine. It wasn't good enough that you could just put the dishes in after eating, you had to pre-clean them. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it was at least 30 minutes. As an adult, I've never owned one, and since becoming responsible enough to clean my dishes frequently, I've never seen the point in owning a dishwasher. I don't think I'm...

That’s basically my life and it’s fantastic. I work 12 timezones away from my colleagues. Get real work done while they are asleep, stay up for occasional meetings, scheduled in advance. I usually take two tickets at once, so if I get stuck and need help, I can switch to the other ticket until someone who can help me is awake.
It’s not a “should” it’s just what happens.
See my reply above. I didn’t think this idea would be controversial. Working conditions should improve when the workers have other options.
I mean that teachers would have a credible threat of leaving and hopefully administrations and school boards would respond to the threat by improving conditions.
If your salary is high enough that you can save some money then you aren’t required to put up with bullshit in order to keep eating food.
I went cold turkey from Reddit recently after realizing my frequent usage was impacting my life and relationships. Was harder and easier than I expected. I kept catching myself opening it in a new tab unconsciously. I learned to stop myself before I’d read a single link, or I’d get sucked in.

Deleted my 10+ year accounts a few weeks ago.

Hardly use it now, and have been able to use it more responsibly.

The best/worst is when you've run out of ideas that make sense, so you start trying ideas that don't make sense and one of them works.

Ask HN: Is an objective and profitable review site possible?

My father is an expert in an industry that 95% of Americans consume from, but know very little about. He currently runs a fairly popular blog where he gives advice and answers questions. I've discussed ways he could monetize it, but he says that he enjoys helping people and if he were to accept sponsorships or affiliate programs he would stop being objective and wouldn't want to do the work...

Re:Myths in cycling: wider tires are slower on Monday June 14, 2021 @11:06PM (#27510839)
Is that different from a "hybrid" bike?
Is this what Gamecube used?
If they ask what you are earning, is there harm in just bumping it by 20%?
Like in Neal Stephenson's Diamond Age. Poorly paid actors in boxes acting as voice assistants.
Related question: is it legal to rehost another site’s links ?

My idea is basically a Reddit-but…

So it would work great with the same exact content as Reddit itself.

How long did you try it for and how much did you experiment with screen size, placement, and count?

I won't pretend it's for everyone, but it did take some time for me to get used to. I didn't have the option of buying multiple good monitors at the time, so I was forced to adapt, but now I prefer it.
