Ask HN: What to do as a back-end dev and with many app ideas but can't do UX?
As a backend deveveloper, I often have many webapp ideas, but I can't do design/UX to save my life, so I never finish things because I get discouraged of how bad it looks in the beginning.Does this happen to anyone else? This is so frustrating and discouraging. I often get unmotivated to finish things because of this issue. How do you guys deal with it?I'm talking strictly about side/weekend...

I see a lot of people from other industries, say designers or sales people, who can set for themselves actionable and measurable goals such as "Make one illustration a day", "Make a logo a day" or "Sell X units of Y product a day", "Make X ammount of dollars seeling product Z by date X", etc.How do you, as a developer, set measurable goals for yourself, being it at work or in your side hobbie?

Lately I've realized that I consume way too much. Be it Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, HackerNews, Youtube, etc. Even though I have a job and I deliver value to society on a dialy basis, I feel like I could contribute more.Another thing that is holding me back I think is the fear of commitement. I'm trying to set up vagrant on my windows machine, but I can never installed it properly, there's always some error when installing a box (for example, the trusty64 hashicorp). It always says "it can't find this box", no matter which box I use

That's cool. Are you running ubuntu with unity or any other DE environment?

I program mostly in Ruby and Rails but I know that people have a hard time setting rails and ruby to properly develop rails applications in windows.On the other hand, I find it slightly annoying to have to switch between my Ubuntu installation and my Windows installation to do different things and I'd like to centralize everything in one OS. What is your strategy for this?
