Re:Let's stop counting centuries on Friday July 05, 2024 @06:45PM (#40886719)
Thankfully, most of us quit writing centuries in Roman numerals, it's about time we quit centuries as well :) Sadly, however, the regnal numbers continue to persist
Re:Is TypeScript actually worth It? on Friday January 13, 2023 @04:42AM (#34365718)
TypeScript feels like it's trying hard to become Java Enterprise level of complexity :)
Not for being Russians, but for active participation in censorship by tweaking their news aggregation to show only hand picked government approved sources

Re:Where is Ruby Headed in 2021? on Friday November 19, 2021 @05:43AM (#29275851)
The first time, a while ago, when I tried Ruby, coming from Java, it was pure joy of freedom :) I really liked the duck typing approach and the dynamic feel of the language. It's rather sad to see static "Java" creeping into it.
Re:Ask HN: Would you build a new search engine today? on Friday November 12, 2021 @02:43PM (#29203692)
I don't, but I really appreciate those brave souls who try. A new, refreshing, honest search, like once Google was, is long overdue.

> the rest of the gender system makes no sense, like a car is "she" but the plane is "he" -- so no one bothers with it

It's actually pretty straightforward. Generally, nouns ending with an "a" are feminine, with an "o" are neuter, the rest are masculine.

Re:Leaving Google on Saturday October 23, 2021 @12:49AM (#28965818)
When you live long enough it becomes evident that scale in tech is a pandemic. At a certain point greed inevitably takes over. I believe there's some kind of a threshold beyond which a company has no choice, but to turn evil.

This is what overengineering looks like
Re:Mozilla to put ads in Firefox address bar suggestions on Thursday October 07, 2021 @05:00AM (#28783853)
Yep, it's the dark pattern wording which really disappoints, the kind Mozilla is supposed to fight against. Like a good old friend that betrays you.

Re:Ask HN: Which Berkeley Courses Should I Archive? on Tuesday March 14, 2017 @02:14PM (#13869975)
Not CS related, but I've found these courses to be of great value:

- Sociology 150A (Robb Willer) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edfKMAePWfE

- Geography C110 (Richard Walker) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYR5PdPZ_w0&list=PL4rxxS6x1H...

- Physics 10: Physics for Future Presidents (Richard Muller) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ysbZ_j2xi0

There's also an audio course on Buddhist Psychology by Eleanor Rosch, if you're interested. Now seems to be available only on iTunes.

Re:Hacker Retreat Berlin on Thursday September 26, 2013 @02:15PM (#6452564)
Konstantin Haase of Sinatra/Ruby fame is based in Berlin and I would recommend him for a mentor.

If you see two spaces, you can almost bet that the author is an American and over 40 years old :)
He's one of the gentlest people I know. If Woz is up in arms, something is really going on.

Re:Sweden Twitter Experiment Goes Painfully Awry on Tuesday June 12, 2012 @02:29PM (#4101961)
I don't see what's the big fuss here. Maybe a few edgy comments, but nothing "painfully awry". I would say kudos to the organizers for their trust in their fellow citizens to speak out freely without censorship.

Btw, her profile [1] on the project's page is up and straight about her agenda (and her character, as well): "I’m gonna tweet about my thoughts and being me, about having children and living my life and what not."

There may be a day when we become so politically-correct about everything that we can't speak out minds anymore.

I would say that it's exclusively an American problem :) I get rather annoyed stumbling on the creationist articles. It's like reading on flat earth in 2012. What's even more entertaining is that people try to explain it in A.C.C. and D.L.P.F.C. terms. Just "get your shit together", folks :)

It'd be nice to have a [PDF] tag in the link.
Re:Hacker News Redesign on Saturday April 21, 2012 @10:09AM (#3871787)
I like the current HN design. It's simple and elegant to my taste. I'm not a fan of eye candy (for the sake of it). Minimalist approach of HN is why I like it and what distinguishes it from others. In short, it's the focus on content, rather than design elements.

But there are a few things I would change:

* Replace the triangle image with a caret. * Remove the points to avoid the popularity bias. * Remove the comments count to avoid the flamebait alarm. * Move the search on the top. * Tone down the color.

I'm most likely in the minority here, but here's my take on it: http://i.imgur.com/3iadZ.png

There's another site called "Exit Mundi" that has a lot of doomsday scenarios. In particular, the grey goo problem: http://www.exitmundi.nl/graygoo.htm
