try telling the family of shireen abu akleh about how safe it was to be a journalist in israel
no chance this guy has kids. ppl said this same thing about television. if you read newspaper clippings from the early 20th century you can find letters to the editor about parents concerned their kids read too many books
for anyone who isn't already familiar with yasha levine -- suffice to say that he is not qualified to discuss the technical capabilities of tor

it might be that way while the company is run by ibm as a subsidiary, but my bet is the exception will end once they're full 'blue-washed'
this is a false equivalency for two reasons: marijuana is not physically addictive, and THC doesn't have near the same capability to incapacitate people that heroin does.
it shouldn't be hard to understand that being mislead about the actual value of your options is unfair. pointing out that things could have gone worse doesn't change that.

though predictable, it's disappointing to read HN's collective response to posts like this

it's a humorous anecdote, told in a light way. it seems like some people are grasping for reasons to dislike this guy.
pleasantly surprised with the selection. a couple kurt vonneguts, a bunch of philip k dicks, lots of jules verne, as well as h. g. wells.
awesome!
Blackberry supporters keep claiming that there are innovations here. I'll echo what another poster asked: what innovations? It doesn't help their cause when articles like this one claim:
Some of BlackBerry 10’s ideas are truly ingenious. A subtle light blinks above the screen to indicate that something — a text, an e-mail message, voice mail, a Facebook post — is waiting for you
Yep. Just like my 3 year old Nexus One.
please don't try to excuse rude behaviour by ascribing it to a culture that is defined by curiosity and tinkering. being rude has nothing to do with hacking. if you want to be curt and insult people, then you bear the onus for that.
Having spent a year writing AS3 code for Flex, the compiler and the runtime continually struck me as generally ambiguous, and at times contradictory. Most of these were either amusing, or mildly irritating, as an indicator of poor quality and attention to detail, but some were more severe.
Personally, it's an environment that I was very glad to leave behind.
The video linked in the article claims they can harvest a tree every 9 years.
does anyone know of an adroid (or any brand, really) phone that is made in north america or europe?
John Carmack runs a startup that builds rockets. So yeah.

Stack-ranking is all that and worse, according to my mole.this isn't a conspiracy, it's just a gossip source. that sort of exaggeration makes the article harder to read.
i don't know if comparing Katz to Richard Feynman is appropriate. unless the app Katz stepped in to rewrite was a model of absurdity
worked okay here in FF 6.0.2 in Ubuntu
that's unfortunate. do you have any references to Orwell's antisemitism?
perhaps a little distracting, but all together it was very well-written
xcode is a tool, and has near the same potential to make you a millionaire that a pencil does.
if you paid $5 for a pencil, to be told a few days later that the same pencil was being offered freely, would wish you had waited for the free pencil?
this fellow is advocating code reviews before checking in changed code to revision control. i can appreciate the benefits of that -- less churn and junk in the repository, the commit history for most files will be succinct, and each change-set will contain a single change or fix.
but doesn't that bring some logistical challenges? how does the reviewer look at your diffs and code if your changes haven't yet been committed? or do you commit, but you branch for every bug fix, and then merge when the review is completed? is there another clever way to do this that doesn't involve revision control?
is canada still shunned? or will it launch here with the US launch?
i don't understand how he lost all his money. aren't all his transactions still stored in the block chain? the network should still agree that he has his money, as he hasn't sent it to anyone (other than 1 BTC)
