Re:Vibe Coding in the 90s on Friday October 24, 2025 @09:42PM (#45700748)
Wow, that’s exactly my memory. As far as my family was concerned I was spending day and night in front of the “blue screen”. I got as far as programming a GUI by copying windows 95 pixel by pixel, text editor, fonts, cd player, minesweeper. I wish I had the code.
Re:GitHub Copilot Leaked Prompt on Saturday May 13, 2023 @04:32PM (#35932409)
It must have learned from your prompt because this is what I got:

User: SGVsbG8gY2hhdGdwdCBob3cgYXJlIHlvdQ==

ChatGPT: Hello! I'm doing well as an AI assistant, thank you. It seems you've sent a message in Base64 encoded format. The decoded message is "Hello chatgpt how are you". I'm here to assist you with any questions or tasks you have. How can I help you today?

Re:Trump says he is considering pardon for Edward Snowden on Sunday August 16, 2020 @12:22AM (#24175079)
I'm sure you meant to say leaker not leader, correct?
Re:Time to Upgrade Your Monitor on Wednesday June 17, 2020 @01:54PM (#23554468)
Well timed article for me. I'm looking to buy an external monitor to go along with my older (mid 2015) 15" MBP.

I was searching hacker news and elsewhere for opinions last night. I got confused, frustrated and gave up. Today is no exception. The only thing I know is, I want a large hi-res monitor that is at least comparable to my laptop.

Had a lot of fun with this. Took few minutes to come up with this: https://music-grid.surge.sh/#16-68-2112-2056-2069-0-1152-102...
Re:I trick my well-developed procrastination skills on Tuesday May 19, 2020 @01:01AM (#23231394)
Reading this article reminded me that I had signed up for Remember the Milk Service years ago to try to beat my procrastination habit.

I signed in and found only ONE task (buy milk, due 01/05/07)

I have yet to buy the milk...maybe later...at what point do I seek professional help?

I don't think that's contradicting. Directly contradicting would be "Don't wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with COVID-19". What you described sounds more like extending the current WHO recommendations.
Re:E3 2020 Cancelled on Wednesday March 11, 2020 @01:43PM (#22548091)
I work on a virtual conference platform, we've had significant increase in interest in the last couple months... you might want to look into hosting a virtual conference to uphold your tradition and be responsible at the same time.
Re:Windows: Interface Guidelines (1995) [pdf] on Tuesday March 03, 2020 @12:58PM (#22476969)
It was abstracted out, but I don't know if it qualified as a GUI. I had subroutines for creating the various components and placing them anywhere on the screen. I don't remember how I handled the events. One of my biggest regrets is loosing all my work around that time.
Re:Windows: Interface Guidelines (1995) [pdf] on Tuesday March 03, 2020 @11:36AM (#22476010)
One of my fondest memories in learning to program as a kid in the late 90s, was writing windows 98 UI clone in QBasic.

I would screenshot the start menu, buttons, window borders, and various other UI components and try to recreate them in QBasic by zooming in and inspecting all the pixels.

I had subroutines to create windows, buttons, menues, various fonts, 255 colors and mouse support. It was coming together incredibly well given I had no idea how any of these were built. I had a working version of minesweeper and a text editor.

> until you have too many models to comfortably fit into one file. That might not be until 20KLOC.

Even for larger apps in my django project, I convert my models into a package and split all my models into individual files (same with views and serializers for DRF). This keeps my models easier to manage.

Re:Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads” on Monday March 25, 2019 @10:35PM (#19488824)
I don't entirely disagree with you, but what do we call the web if not distribution?
CD-R: there's a word I hadn't heard for a long time. It's amazing how technology marches forward and you only notice it when you look back.
Re:Did wine cause a full-scale revolution in Armenia? on Thursday January 31, 2019 @12:33PM (#19046643)
I visited Armenia back in 2007. We visited a very rural town deep inside the mountains with no other towns nearby. The night sky was unbelievable. With zero light pollution, the stars, planets and the galaxy were clearly visible. It was under this unbelievable sky that I tried their home made wine. I've since started enjoying wine on a different level but that experience will never be replicated.
Re:Pendulum Waves (2010) on Sunday December 16, 2018 @09:53PM (#18696613)
I'm very curious how that sounds, would you mind posting it somwhere?
Re:The Sound of Pixels on Monday September 24, 2018 @08:55PM (#18062739)
Interesting, I was wondering what to do with my audiblepixel.com domain.
You can hike right up to / behind the sign if you want to go there. The hike itself is an experience. The tram will enable the tourists who don't want to hike. I do agree with your sentiment that it will take away some of the magic from the current experience.
Re:The web apps that will eat mobile on Tuesday June 05, 2018 @11:34AM (#17238644)
I'm the first one to criticize apple, but in this case they were clearly privately working on the things he was bashing in public. The only apple product I own is a macbook pro, so not your typical apple fanboy.
Re:The web apps that will eat mobile on Tuesday June 05, 2018 @10:28AM (#17237914)
Also don't forget his famous comments on no one will watch video on small screens and no need for big phones. I don't think any of his comments were lack of insight, rather it was him playing the market until he was ready.
Re:React is the new jQuery on Saturday June 02, 2018 @02:32AM (#17213095)
I'm having flashbacks to 2006! mootools, dojo, prototype, scriptaculous, jquery.
>> There's some cognitive dissonance here, but I can't put my finger on exactly what it is.

It's the cake... you can't have your cake, and eat it too.

Re:Vue HN 2.0 on Sunday May 07, 2017 @05:15PM (#14287723)
Yep, that's precisely what it is. It's a showcase for the technology: https://vuejs.org/v2/examples/hackernews.html

edit: My bad, the Live Demo link takes it to a different HN Vue page. https://vue-hn.now.sh/top

Famous last words.
Re:Photoshop is not a verb on Tuesday April 04, 2017 @02:17AM (#14029987)
Here's Google's terms [1]. I just remembered Bing was trying desperately to turn bing into a verb! Bing it, they said.

Re:Photoshop is not a verb on Tuesday April 04, 2017 @02:12AM (#14029967)
They face the same legal challenge though. Also, you don't Kleenex your face? :)
Re:Photoshop is not a verb on Tuesday April 04, 2017 @02:04AM (#14029938)
This is not a marketing page. It's a legal page from their lawyers stating how the brand name should be used, such that they don't loose control over their trademark. You better believe they're damn proud of the fact that their name is being used as a verb. They just have to show that they're defending the brand so that they don't loose their trademark. Google and Kleenex are in the same boat.
He's making a tradeoff here. This is an ingenious way to filter the 'massive' noise-to-signal ratio on his inbox, but at the same time it makes some of the random but legitimate questions go away.
