agree, unfortunately in practice it's more common to throw the api behind k8s with containers

Re:AWS Lambda Web Functions on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:11AM (#50072969)
Strong disagree, we use lambda/sfn/other services to process hundreds of millions of pages of data annually and it scales beautifully while being mostly hands-free and easy to maintain with a small team.

ah if there's one thing I miss about Seattle it's living near the locks / discovery park, such a magical area!

Re:Dots: Always-on agents on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @01:29PM (#49897024)
Does this basically do what Instinct does? (viral text-only agent w/$10B valuation in short notice)

Also why do we need another name for agents? It's getting to be too much...

why not mantle? - I was confused why mantle exists over normal bedrock

I feel the same way about ember.js :]
ahh yes, fresh off reading "Html For Dummies" I made my first tripod.com site

MySpace was the last fun social network, bummer you missed it!
Re:Miami, Your Waymo Ride Is Ready on Thursday January 22, 2026 @12:34PM (#46722432)
My first and only Waymo ride was super sketch. Car slowed down to ~5mph in a 35mph zone and stayed that way for 5+ minutes as other cars were swerving around us. Felt like it was going to come to a complete stop in the middle of the road, I prefer real humans.
Having worked in the space I have real doubts about that. Right now Claude and other top models already do a decent job at e.g. "generate OCR from this document". But as mentioned there are serious failure modes, it's non-deterministic, and especially cost-prohibitive at scale.
Re:Gemini 3 Flash: frontier intelligence built for speed on Wednesday December 17, 2025 @01:57PM (#46303876)
this. I don't know any non-tech people who use anything other than chatgpt. On a similar note, I've wondered why Amazon doesn't make a chatgpt-like app with their latest Alexa+ makeover, seems like a missed opportunity. The Alexa app has a feature to talk to the LLM in chat mode, but the overall app is geared towards managing devices.
Re:Waymo begins freeway rides for the public on Thursday November 13, 2025 @09:37PM (#45923244)
Pretty sure but yeah it's possible, either way the traffic was moving fast and we slowed down to the point where it felt unsafe.
Re:Waymo begins freeway rides for the public on Wednesday November 12, 2025 @12:29PM (#45902967)
I had my first waymo ride in Austin recently and it suddenly slowed down to 20mph in 40mph zone for 5+ mins before returning to normal speed. Cars were passing around us and it felt like the car was glitching out, which felt very sketchy.

very nice! curious if you could comment on the tech stack, did you use swift or react native or something else?
Re:Open Social on Friday September 26, 2025 @08:16PM (#45392332)
Each one had a different minor evolution in *product - a cleaner interface, a virtual pager with 180 chars, professional grade photo filters, disappearing messages, a song stitched with a video. If I had to guess what (if any) next big social app was going to be like, I would guess it would be purely driven by a product feature and not a protocol.

Yeah I was thinking, what problem does this solve?
Re:Are We Decentralized Yet? on Saturday August 30, 2025 @10:46PM (#45079907)
spot on, same reason irc never spread to the masses
Looks nice! I like how simple/clean it is. I spent 3+ months building a contenteditable component from scratch for https://sqwok.im, learned a lot and was fun but oh my did it get challenging, especially with cross-browser issues.
Re:Litestar Is Worth a Look on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @11:00PM (#44820130)
Same, I've built all my recent api's in Starlette alone and I find it excellent. It's clean, concise, well documented, and you can extend it as needed, supporting small -> very large projects.
that was a great read, thanks! - agentic noob
Re:Svelte 5 is not JavaScript on Tuesday February 18, 2025 @12:58PM (#43092925)
Agree, overall ember has felt stable and only improved with age, unfortunately becoming increasingly niche.

At my company I mentioned using it in passing to our cto as we were discussing a project to move our core web app from angular to react, and he laughed saying "maybe if this was 10 years ago!".

Re:Modern JavaScript for Django Developers on Wednesday January 15, 2025 @01:36PM (#42715084)
DRF has been around a long time at this point, and that's been a common stack (albeit with other frontend frameworks 10 years ago).

In recent times I'm a fan of Starlette, which is what the popular FastAPI lib is built on top of, and created by same author as DRF.

Not true, you can find unsalted organic peanut butter w/o any other ingredients at WholeFoods and elsewhere.
About six months ago I was auditing my bank statements and realized I've been paying Adobe ~$40 for the past 5-6 years or so, almost $3,000 for software I very seldom used if at all in recent times. Closed my account, downloaded gimp, and won't be using Adobe in the future.
