"worldwide apex predator" == "good at it (being animals)" ?
if not this person, someone else will. so it just boils down to asking what his personal political views are.
not everyone can be dirk nowitzki :(
> you have to handle them
the definition of "handle" widely varies, to the point of making the exercise near meaningless.
it's unfortunate that rust seems barely more than a compiler. it's... empty. the "ecosystem" feels like a namespace-free dogpile of college spring break experiments. a wasteland of pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha 0.0.0.0.0.1 stuff. it'll be 10 years before it improves to even being underwhelming.
in go, you can download it and have the pieces to actually do useful stuff right away. legit productivity. not to mention putting together graphs or graph-like structures and other similar things aren't the obtuse sphinx riddles they are in rust.
who is "esr" and why do you accuse them of such things?
edit: oh, the The Cathedral and the Bazaar dude. i saw a video about him that seemed to portray him well. but having found his blog... well... i can understand your sentiment.
can go (or rust) compile for targets that don't have a jvm?
when i first saw d (years back), it merely seemed like an attempted c+++.
the syntax seemed extremely similar, as if they took c++ and just tweaked it a bit, rather than working at least somewhat from first principles.
seemed almost comically pointless at the time. no doubt it's evolved since then.
why would someone think it was "compact disc"? even if a hn reader was somehow completely ignorant of continuous delivery, the context and usage should be a guide.
what does "feeling female" mean?
i guess it's always good to have an exit strategy.
i think it's only odd to some because of prescriptive "style guide" insistence over the years. it makes a great deal of sense.
does "they" imply a gender?
this is both reductive and a red herring.
i'm inclined to think there is no such thing as a "free press". i'm also of a mind that even when one presumes such a thing exists, there's no reason to believe that this leads to "truth" or "reliability" in reporting.
i hope there's a third way between corporate news and government news.
i think trump's win had a lot less to do with trump himself than other factors.
do you have "strong political views"?
"efficient" is an overloaded term, and depending on your meaning it's not something everyone's pursuing.
> That seemed pretty absurd
...why?
one-sided reporting as usual.
> something relatively trivial like Twitter has 4000 people
there is more to twitter than the web app you type dozen words into.
i don't much about them (including whether 4000 is accurate), but presumably there's a lot to work on regarding international near-realtime messaging infrastructure, high availability, machine learning, sentiment analysis, smart advertising systems, yadda yadda. 4k does seem like a lot, but i doubt their suits are interested in needlessly hiring people to sit around picking their nose.
> despite the fact that every single game, which made a significant critical/financial impact had a period of crunch
this argument doesn't necessarily disprove the notion. it's plausible to suggest that whatever impact they had was mitigated to some degree.
a coincidence, but whatever.
i think having known bounds would make arrays a non-zero cost abstraction.
perhaps "unobvious" to you, but that's something which is empirically (if subjectively) resolvable, no?
well, you would, you're in games. fairly substantial amount of stockholm syndrome in game programmers, imo. ;-)
bjarne and others in the community have talked about the heavy cost of legacy and compatibility many times. it's okay to like the language but acknowledge that it's not as awesome as it theoretically could be. it's okay to be unhappy with the warts and weirdness -- after all, such things are what the committee needs to be mindful of when progressing the language.
there's no real reason a language can't outright replace c++ without having many (most? all?) of it's idiosyncrasies. rust is a decent attempt, though the memory safety ideology seems too high friction to properly replace c++. there might be others who give it a shot someday.
