Yep, the police are public servants. When you're on the clock, you work for the people.

What kind of tools / treatments have you used / learned afterwards to deal with your ADHD like symtoms?
Re:Ask HN: Front-End Bait and Switch? on Wednesday August 07, 2024 @04:10PM (#41184887)
So have you been laid off or fired several times in the past few years? Do they tell you its because you can't do frontend or is it for performance issues? I feel like there's some key information missing here.
I see the opposite as someone born and living in San Francisco. Growing up in the city, we had arcades, bowling alleys, mini golf, Lan Party Cafe's, etc.

Then the city got more and more expensive, and businesses couldn't afford the rent / leases in the city anymore.

Affordable recreation isn't available in SF and that leads me to just stay at home as an adult instead of going out and doing something that doesn't involve drinking.

Churches don't pay taxes. They collect money from attendee's to pay for the real estate they occupy.

Any other gathering / community has to deal with these real world problems before they can attract people.

In my college years, there were clubs or fraternities, and they could use classrooms or student unions as low cost resources to gather in person and foster community. I think that's a barrier as an adult.

Yep. Also besides Lan parties, we had the N64, which allowed 4 peoplo play together. GoldenEye and various Mario games were a blast. the next generation had Halo and linking Xbox's together. Now a days I don't think kids or teens are having that same kind of fun we did back in the day.

I know ECC is a special type of ram, but how does it help a NAS/Raid setup?

I'm interested in knowing more about how you guys implemented the operator model and decided on those tools. Was there a book or anything that was helpful in all of this?
I don't think they believe its a hoax. A lot of it is also hoping someone else will solve the problem for them. Or because climate change hasn't dramatically changed their normal lives yet that forces them for action. People are not really good at preventing problems, hence why history tends to repeat itself.

Re:Ask HN: How did you get into DevOps / Infra / SRE? on Friday July 14, 2023 @02:16PM (#36727838)
The hardest thing about developing linux skills is having consistent exposure. At a work setting its a lot easier because you are hosting applications that people will use. So people will notice if the application stops working, and its someone job to figure out why. The application might have crashed, the disk might be full, the network might be down. As you troubleshoot issues you gain experience and you remember more. The closest thing to at home is running something like a plex server or even your own ftp/dropbox clone. Something where other people will use it, which ofrces you to make sure its always running, needs to be updated because of OS updates or app updates, and possibly needing to expand it.
Re:Ask HN: How did you get into DevOps / Infra / SRE? on Friday July 14, 2023 @10:44AM (#36724724)
As someone in DevOps, the cool thing about the field is that people come from different skillsets. You can be a developer that works at a startup that needed to learn how to support your applications and become proficient in infrastructure and SRE. You can come from IT/Sys Admin and get teamed up with developers providing them Ci/CD pipelines and platforms. You can come from the Cloud world and expand your cloud skills into DevOps. Like being a developer, at the end of the day its solving problems and painpoints. Being on-call and waking up at 3AM because of an application going down, you learn and are motivated very quickly in figuring out how not to have that happen ever again.
> Fundamentally low-income people are just being spoken for. On this site it's high-income people who claim to know what low-income people think

That line is spot on. Your comment on the data in the original comment felt like it was trying to paint that low income people don't want police. I think if we take a step back, we both agree that the data itself might not be an actual representation of how people in their area/district/transportation system actually feel.

I do think Bart, San Francisco, and of the like are going to now need to think of how to make people want to use and be active in the systems they created. They use to have the privledge of people being forced to use what was provided and didn't care about the quality or level of service it needed to have. But now people have a choice. AThey don't need to ride bart to go to work and feel uneasy around unsafe people. They don't need to go shopping in downtown SF because they can just amazon everything they need and don't need to interact with shady people outside the west field mall. People are speaking with their actions and hopefully governence are paying attention to why.

Your comment is really misguided. Anyone in lower income does not have time to attend meetings or pay attention to local politics. Think about it this way, crime does not happen in affluent areas because they will more often generate much more attention to police their neighborhood for safety. Lower income areas are ALWAYS where the crime is because the population there does not have the time or resources to form a safe community, nor do they even believe they will be listened to because they are always neglected by government action.

A few years back the city of San Francisco was trying to buy a local hotel in Japantown to use as a lower income housing / shelter. They tried to sneak fast track the process but were still required to have community meetings. I was in these meetings as its my neighborhood and ALL the people who were PRO on this project were OLDER people who were retired or in good places in their lives and wanted to interject their good feelings on a neighborhood they DONT EVEN LIVE IN. All the people against the project were all people who LIVE in or work in the area. It was just incredibly infuriating hearing these people who had no business being there but wanted to give their woke justice opinion.

They have no reason to pay them. Hell I think Reddit could find a cheaper way of using ChatGPT and making their own inhouse mods then pay existing mods who go on strike.
Re:Ask HN: I'm being pushed out of my job on Tuesday June 20, 2023 @08:54PM (#36412938)
You're in a lose lose situation imo. You have no allies, especially if your manager isn't backing you up or seeing the same problems you are seeing. Regardless of how you feel about your contributions to the company or its future success, at the end of the day you are just a cog in the wheel and will always be viewered as replaceable. But something you didn' tmention is, what is your goal here, do you want to stay at all costs, or try to find justice? I don't think you'll get justice, but I do see a way for you to just bow down your head and stick to your own tasks, make sure you don't make any more mistakes, and ride out your stock options before you leave. If you want something more, you'd need to play the politics game and find allies in power who will protect you and defend you.
I don't know about categories, but I would love it if posts were tagged somehow so I can filter away all the crypto stuff that gets posted.
Re:Ask HN: How should we compensate forum moderators? on Friday June 16, 2023 @03:54PM (#36362894)
What are we brain storming though? How to build a platform / site to pay moderators? But even before that, why would a regular user go to that site in the first place vs somewhere like Reddit/Facebook Groups/where-ever?
Re:Ask HN: How should we compensate forum moderators? on Friday June 16, 2023 @02:59PM (#36362001)
Are your questions meant to be a brainstorming on how an ideal site compensates Moderators or something else? A site like Reddit is depended on users visiting and generating content (discussions). Moderators are just middlemen that facilitate those discussions. a site like Reddit probably doesn't value the idea of moderators very much because anyone can become a moderator. Moderators aren't influencers, so they don't move communities. The value of a community are of the people that participate in that space and the biggest draw of reddit is that its easy to participate in multiple communities at the same time.
I don't think your lack of success is because of the remote aspect. An interview is meant to see if your skill set can match with what the company is looking for and values. I don't know the React market and whether companies are getting flooded with candidates and can just swipe away people like tinder, but to me, your lack of success is either you are competiting against too many people, or they don't value your React knowledge / experience enough or don't think they can train you to get up to speed on how their tech stack works.
Re:Ask HN: How should we compensate forum moderators? on Friday June 16, 2023 @02:34PM (#36361543)
I wasn't aware that modwerators were compensated. I thought it was a service they provided to their communities.
Don't build, talk to people. Find people who would actually pay money for your potential idea/product/tool. I remember a interview with Twillio's CEO where he described how he came up with the idea of an API for text messages, he was meeting with a developer over a different product, and pitched the idea, and at first that developer didn't seem interested, but 5 minutes later that developer started asking more questions where the idea of texting api was taking roots.

HN is definitely a good place to get brutal feedback on ideas.

Re:Found my business idea already out there on Thursday June 15, 2023 @10:42PM (#36350396)
You should stop building immediately. Find someone who would pay for your service right now (pre-ordering your product) OR find someone using your competitors service and find out if they like it, or need something better, build that better product and see if it coverts the competition.
Can you speak more on how you balance your persoanlities? How do you balance speaking from a pessimistic perfpective while also being encouraging and supportive?
This is the exact conversation I had with my friend, just not the same numbers haha. To be fair to your friend and mine, I don't think its impossible for them for their outcome to come true. Whether its delusions or not, there is a belief they have that its possible what they're thinking can come true. So what kind of "support" is best here? We can be dismissive, and I don't think they'd feel good about that. We can be rational and debative, but that doesn't feel good to be "attacked" in some ways. But at the same time agreeing and staying silent also doesn't feel genuine to myself.

Ask HN: How to be supportive to people willing to take risks?

I know people who are starting a start up or on a related area, investing in stocks/companies. Usually they are very enthusiastic and optimistic about what they're doing. I'm unfortunately a lot more risk adverse and cynical about certain ideas / "opportunities" and am willing to debate and challenge beliefs, but I realize that a lot of people just want the support and echo chamber...

I'm confused, if someone is already using something like GKE or EKS, what do you do? Presuming people are using cloud build/code pipeline with their setups.
