Re:Australia says OpenAI agent hacked into government website on Thursday September 24, 2026 @02:25AM (#49826927)
I’m assuming sarcasm here?

That link describes a hack of Medibank, which is a private company.

Big claim, care to back it up?
Musk and his peers complain that the system doesn’t work. That somehow they’ve been hard done by.

They’re the richest people in history. Did society not work spectacularly for them - why are they obsessed with burning it to the ground?

Re:Project Glasswing: An Initial Update on Friday May 22, 2026 @05:24PM (#48241867)
He’s talking about AI scanning tools collectively, not specifically Mythos.

If you read his own top comment on that LinkedIn post he clarifies:

“The simple reason is: the (AI powered) tools are this good now. And people use these tools against curl source code. They find lots of new problems no one detected before. And none of these new ones used Mythos. Focusing on Mythos is a distraction - there are plenty of good models, and people who can figure out how to get those models and tools to find things.”

Government isn’t perfect but I’d be interested to know what alternative you propose?
Is it? It would be incredible if the government didn’t have specific requirements for critical infrastructure.

Say you’re an energy company and an incident could mean that a big part of the country is without power, or you’re a large bank and you can’t process payroll for millions of workers. They’re ability to recover quickly and completely matters. Just recently in Australia an incident at Optus, a large phone company, prevented thousands of people from making emergency calls for several hours. Several people died including a child.

The people should require these providers behave responsibly. And the way the people do that is with a government.

Companies behave poorly all the time. Red tape isn’t always bad.

If supply chain integrity is the issue specifically for Shopify, couldn’t they run their own private, internally facing gem repository and whitelist everything that goes there? It’s not a requirement to use the public rubygems.

You might want to reread that page.

“1,000,000,000,000, i.e. one million million, or 1012 (ten to the twelfth power), as defined on the short scale. This is now the meaning in both American and British English.”

Not defending it… but Australia has done this for decades.

Most famously on Nauru https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nauru_Regional_Processing_Ce...

As Colbert said… Reality has a well known liberal bias.
Re:Dell will no longer make XPS computers on Monday January 06, 2025 @04:34PM (#42616152)
Dell as the name of the laptop itself makes no sense. Like Apple replacing ‘MacBook’ with ‘Apple’.

I’ve used this for a side project. Coupled with Litestream for backups it’s awesome.

I would 100% recommend.

Their logo is also almost identical to a huge competitor in the monitoring space. Meltwater -> https://www.meltwater.com/

The male voice has a real resemblance to Leo Laporte. Similar tone and cadence.

Uncanny valley all round.

Re:My Month Without a Smartphone on Monday June 10, 2024 @01:11AM (#40630371)
I’m similar. I’ve just done a few things to dumb down my iPhone. No notifications etc.

I could happily avoid social media but safari is by far my biggest time wasting app. News as well as googling random interesting things all day and then ending up going down random rabbit holes on niche topics. Also not a great use of time because I end up learning a little trivia on lots of stuff, nothing particularly useful.

I want my phone so I have a good camera on photos of my kid, managing my business, maps and small daily things like being able to sign my kid into daycare. I can delete the time wasting apps… except safari is the main offender.

Some companies Including Google.

I’ve sold Enterprise Saas to Google and we had to attest we have no AGPL code servicing them. This is for a CRM-like app.

American stopped because the new composite planes like the 787 aren’t metal any more.
Source is a close relative involved in responding to a recent, well publicised data breach.

They service several large commonwealth departments and were instructed by them not to pay.

I doubt it. Here in Australia at least companies with large gov contracts are prevented by gov policy from paying ransoms.

It’s not even has_one :posts, it’s has_one :post because of even more rails pluralization magic :)

Agree with everything you said

I’d put Rowan Atkinson squarely in the car enthusiast/gear head category.

Ha! Perhaps I read about that some time ago and my brain decided to file it away as a memory of my own.

Thanks for sharing.

Re:Ideas That Changed My Life on Monday April 10, 2023 @03:05AM (#35509865)
Anecdotally a similar effect happened with a friend’s childcare center.

They were sick of parents showing up late to pick their kids up so they instituted a penalty of $x for every minute a parent was late. More parents ended up being late because they felt less guilty knowing they could just pay the penalty. The social pressure to be on time was replaced by a financial one.

250k is not a lot. A 15-20 person company could conceivably spend more than that month, especially with dev salaries, rent etc.

How many of those have a treasury function?

Re:The factory that only builds white Toyota Land Cruisers on Monday November 28, 2022 @02:42PM (#33778517)
Lane Cruiser 70s are still very common in Australia and available new. They might be basic and old but they’re not cheap - starting around 80K aud.
