Because they are? Google and Bing are the same product - search engines. Just like Ford and Ferrari both sell cars, whether you think one is "better" or not.

If you're gonna give them credit for stuff like that, then you need to at least give credit to the United States as far back as the Pilgrims in the 1600s.

Ask HN: Why would I use Openrouter over something like DeepInfra directly?

As far as I understand it, OpenRouter is just routing to providers such as DeepInfra, Baseten, Fireworks, Together, etc, who already provide access to many open-weight models. If my goal is to just use open-weight models and maybe add an extra key for OpenAI or Anthropic when necessary, why wouldn't I just use one of these? What's the point of the 5 percent markup?

I'm disappointed that forty two labs isn't selling the answer to life, the universe and everything.
Yes but at the very least they are an insurance against the big companies deciding to Enshittify their product.

For example if (when) open ai decides to 10x their price once every one is sufficiently hooked these open weight models will still be here.

Re:The Dunning-Kruger Effect Is Probably Not Real on Monday August 03, 2026 @05:27PM (#49161656)
It's called "engineer's disease" which is pretty appropriate for this community:

wouldn't the analogy be Wagyu farmers?
Rent control is just one of many factors that affect an incentive to build. For example (and these are hypothetical numbers just to show the point), if rent control made developers 10 percent less likely to build but easing building restrictions made them 50 percent more likely, it would result in a net gain for building overall.
If anything, being against monopolies is actually pro small business because monopolies make it harder for small businesses to compete
I'm not sure what point you're making, but if anything, that makes this MORE impressive not less, if they can do great work with little resources.
Re:What xAI's Grok Build CLI Actually Sends to xAI on Saturday July 11, 2026 @11:34PM (#48878038)
Friendly reminder: since Musk now owns Cursor, there are a bunch of really good open-source alternatives you can use.
They all moved to Substack.
Sounds like a great opportunity to build a markplace of these entities, where sellers can sell them to buyers and the marketplace automates as much of the paperwork as possible.
Theres several open source options you can use.

The highest github stars one is called `zed` another one i've heard about is `Cline`

theirs also a few that yc backed ones:

`Void`

`Continue`

`PearAI`

For what its worth the non yc ones have way more github stars but im sure the yc ones are good too. I think `Continue` is the biggest yc one.

The value is not in the literal buildings, the value is in the people, the managers, engineers, etc and the owners who know how to run it.

The people who are hired and organized by the korean comapny. This is litterlly the logic that collapsed venezuela's oil industry after it was seized by the state.
