it's like a theme park, the feels - not a museum
Re:56k.rip – the 1996 dial-up internet experience on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @10:24PM (#49916945)
Its less like a museum, and more like a theme park. It's fun
fair call. i took the scripted regulars out completely. everyone typing in there now is a real person. the older lines at the top are real people too, just from earlier
Outage fixed :)
This is fixed now
Turn your speakers on, the sounds in there :)
different goal. infinite mac is a museum, this is closer to a theme park.
A zero-account browser chat room mimicking mid-90s online services.

The state runs on Upstash Redis and is shared across three different frontends (React/Vite deployed on Vercel):

* The standalone chat interface (https://lolchat.rip)

* A Windows 95 simulator (https://56k.rip)

* A Mac System 7 simulator (https://dialup.rip)

Users dialing in from the Mac desktop and users on the Win95 machine end up in the exact same rooms talking to each other.

Re:1996 PC dial-up and early web simulator on Thursday September 17, 2026 @08:23AM (#49739754)
https://56k.rip simulates a 1996 PC dial-up desktop using procedural Web Audio for the modem handshake sounds.

It links to a Mac OS counterpart (https://dialup.rip) and a large procedurally generated webring (https://webring.rip).

Free, client-side, with zero tracking.

Fixed!
I built this. One button, one random site - personal pages, oddities, single-purpose things. Every entry has a blurb I wrote by hand.

No tracking, no third-party scripts.

Currently Math.random(). random.org’s API would give true randomness sourced from atmospheric noise.

Might add it in a future release.

Classical Wilhelm-Baynes translation, three coin method, 64 hexagrams. No signup, no ads, free to use.

It also has an optional AI interpretation layer - but the classical text is always shown first, fully intact. Built it because I wanted something that treated the tradition seriously.

Carl Jung wrote the foreword to this exact translation and credited the I Ching with shaping his theory of synchronicity.
