Ask HN: Is academia dead regarding LLMs?

I find it astounding that the only entities apparently engaging in effective research on LLMs are tech firms such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Meta. While access to GPU resources and data certainly plays a significant role, it is strange to me that universities and public research institutions seem to lack both despite having large budgets. Why aren't students conducting research on GPU...

I work at a German company, we give very specific verbal feedback after every interview (I did it many times). Just because lawyers recommend against it does not mean you cannot do it.
I don't think so. For me, workplace is a lot about face to face communication. Oculus with its big black helmet does not exactly foster that. I hope we don't in the future sit all at home in our Oculus VR.

I have tried an Oculus and think it is awesome for gaming, and probably some special work environments, e.g. car designers. But as a general purpose workplace or for programming, I don't think it fits.

I don't think it is overreach even if it is a rather strong market regulation. The EU has the responsibility to tear down economic borders inside the EU. Just like you don't have to pay import tax when buying stuff from another EU country, you should not have to pay roaming charges. Obviously the better solution would be the free market takes care of that by itself. It didn't. And there are no signs of it happening. So the EU regulation is a pragmatic solution.

[citation needed] is shorthand for "Bold claim. I disagree & very much doubt you can back your claim up.". Which I think is ok. Problems arise if it is used for "I disagree & I like to look smart". That is why I would prefer people use the long form, not cryptic shorthand.
He does not say split equally with the idea guy. Idea guy gets one fifth.

Agreed. However I would take any general advice with a grain of salt. Every business situation is different.

I love this list. If you follow James Altucher for some time, this is basically all his experience very much condensed.

As with all advice, it certainly does not apply 100% all the time for your context. But this is some sound advice from someone who has a bit of experience building business, both successful and failing.

What works best for me: Work closely with super-motivated people who inspire you. Procrastination goes down to zero. Interestingly, the effect lasts even after your project with these people is finished.

Good luck!

I would argue criticism is communicated differently across generations, not being less accepted.

There is a difference between a) "I don't like $x about your idea." b) "I like $y about your idea. I think you could make it even better if you do $x differently. For example like this: ..."

In my experience, older generations tend to do a) more, while younger ones do (and expect) b) more. Not a bad development IMO.
