Ask HN: What nonprofits do you donate to?

Hi HN! It's time for end-of-year giving, and I'm always looking for charitable causes that will put my money to good use. What nonprofits do you support?Personally, I like GiveDirectly—their work is research-backed and life-changing—and if you're interested in donating to them I'd appreciate if you did so through my weird little romantic art project (100% of your donation goes to GiveDirectly):...

Re:Ask and Show HN: Ever coded for love? Willing to share? on Saturday August 08, 2020 @04:30PM (#24094979)
I’m a quirky person and wanted to propose to my girlfriend in an unconventional way. I’m also a coder with a long history of making weird websites for good causes. So I turned my proposal into a gamified art piece/website: https://helpmepropose.live

It hasn’t gotten as much traction as I’d hoped, but I still had fun making it and spending way too much time on that pixel art that perhaps no one will ever see...

Re:The cost of parsing JSON on Sunday September 22, 2019 @09:28PM (#21045224)
Hey underwater, I just wanted to follow up and say thanks. Without doing any other optimization, it seems that switching the ajax request from JSON to a big TypedArray changed Chrome's parsing time from 18 seconds to instantaneous: https://helpmepropose.live

Thanks again!

That's a good idea, thanks! I'd previously thought typed arrays had to be initialized with data that's already in memory, but it looks like I was wrong there. This page is giving some hints that it can be done: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/XMLHttpRequ...
Re:The cost of parsing JSON on Wednesday September 18, 2019 @07:48PM (#21011769)
I was hoping this blog post would be about the Chrome team speeding up JSON parsing. On a website I made[1] with a ~1MB JSON ajax payload, Chrome takes about 18 seconds to parse the JSON, while Safari parses it pretty much instantaneously.

EDIT: Does anyone know if there's something I could do differently to speed this up in Chrome?

Re:Show HN: A Crowdsourced Marriage Proposal on Saturday June 22, 2019 @10:00AM (#20249579)
Hi HN! I thought this would be a fun and creative take on a marriage proposal. Would love to hear what you think!
Re:Steal Million Dollar Homepage Pixels on Monday June 17, 2019 @01:10PM (#20205082)
Interesting and fun project! Also kind of surprised to see this on HN as I recently launched a vaguely similar project (1$ = 1 pixel in a website image), but raising money for charity and designed around a marriage proposal instead of mere advertising.
Re:Show HN: Help me propose to my girlfriend on Wednesday June 12, 2019 @09:09AM (#20164144)
Hey HN! I'm excited to share this website with you all. It's very important to me (obviously), and anything you could do to share it with friends/family/whoever would really mean a lot. (If it doesn't pick up steam then it goes from being a romantic gesture to just being sad.)

Feedback and questions are more than welcome. <3

HelpMePropose – An Art Project for Love

Hi HN! I've spent the past few months putting together a weird sort of charity/art project. My first submission to HN seems to have been marked as spam, so I'm hoping this one goes through. Here's the project: https://helpmepropose.liveFeedback welcome. Happy to answer any questions!
