Great feedback, thank you! I have not invested much energy in new player onboarding since I have been the least experienced player using it so far, but assisted play for the first game is a lot more elegant than the rules modal I pop right now.

Text selection and dragging bug is annoying, I'll fix that.

Show HN: Patterns with Friends – free multiplayer tile game (no sign-up, no ads)

https://patternswithfriends.com

A couple weeks ago we were on vacation with friends, and after the kids were asleep we played games -- mostly Qwirkle, which I had never played and am terrible at. I don't care about being terrible at games, so I made a web version to keep playing after vacation: build lines of tiles that share a color or a shape, 2-4 players (or add bots).I wanted it to be low friction, so there are no...

This looks great. The decisions feature, and the focus on good async, reminds me of Stride (Atlassian's failed chat product).

Chat is such a social product, even inside a company, as many here have addressed. That said, irc, hipchat, campfire, matrix, slack, zulio, lync, wave, and a hundred others have had their moments of success, and I could see this being on the more successful side.

Definitely interested in that!

Yes! I always thought that was a very clever project, and was sad when it ceased development. Very excited to try this out, and glad to have stayed on Debian all these years.

Immediate purchase. My urban planning dwarf fortress dream.
Would love to see that--haven't found a great LLM interface for obsidian yet.

Same -- I still think of Scalzi as a new(ish) SF writer since he started publishing after I was an adult SF reader. Woof, time marches on!

They added jumps about 6 months ago: https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/pull/8875

I haven't experienced data loss, but I agree that's a blocker for regular use.

Ordered. Can you recommend a stand that has worked well? Love the vision.
Re:Claude 3 model family on Monday March 04, 2024 @04:27PM (#39596363)
Seems to get it right on my first try. Interesting unreliability.

User: Sally (a girl) has 3 brothers. Each brother has 2 sisters. How many sisters does Sally have?

Claude: To solve this, let's break it down step-by-step:

We know that Sally has 3 brothers. Each of Sally's brothers has 2 sisters. This might make you think that there are 6 sisters in total (3 brothers × 2 sisters each). However, this is not the case. The sisters that each brother has are the same - they are Sally and one other sister. The question is asking how many sisters Sally herself has, not the total number of sisters in the family. Since Sally is a girl, she cannot be her own sister. Therefore, the number of sisters Sally has is equal to the number of sisters each of her brothers has minus herself. So, if each brother has 2 sisters, and one of those sisters is Sally, then Sally must have 2 - 1 = 1 sister. Therefore, Sally has 1 sister.

This is covered by the cross-platform scenario. It's not super elegant, although I'd say it's easier than typing 100+ random characters (and also trusting that the locked down device doesn't have any key logging?). Lots of providers have their own FAQ, but here's one: https://www.corbado.com/passkeys/faq#:~:text=Passkeys%20have....

You may want to look at courtlistener.org as inspiration--similar set of problems, but in a different space obviously.
Just another endorsement for screen.studio--it's extremely handy for me feature announcements, demos, and FAQs.
This is great! I've been thinking about building something similar for sleep training with my toddler--need something that works in a dark room by feel and has variable intervals. Love it.

In the terminal, I use aerc, which added jmap support recently. Currently only available on master, but a new release should be out soon: https://git.sr.ht/~rjarry/aerc/commit/be0bfc1ae28b49be654662...

I'll make the obvious point that these interviews were not good predictors of success at the companies.

In general, I've found in 15 years of interviews that interviews are not highly correlated with the work at any given company. I wish we would move beyond cargo cult interview styles and base interviews (and screening, for that matter) on the actual work and culture of each company.

I believe we have found the economist.

What's the electrical failure rate of every appliance in your home, and the associated risk of death by electrocution? If you don't know offhand, it might be that you are implicitly relying on UL standards to keep you safe and whole.

Consumers don't have perfect information, so the risk is asymmetric. If you assume the market will sort out risk and quality so we don't need standards and enforcement thereof, I don't believe your model is aligned with reality.

Feel free to cite studies supporting your claims (genuinely, not sarcasm, but making positive claims about factual matters can and should be supported by evidence).
This is a fantastic service, and could definitely be commercialized for divorce attorneys. And made freely available to DV survivors.
Re:FastGPT: A fast, full search, AI answering engine on Friday April 28, 2023 @03:03PM (#35745661)
You're GPT famous now. The response as of Apr 28, 2023:

Oral argument indicates property rights likely to prevail in that home equity theft case.

The Supreme Court seemed sympathetic to the homeowner Geraldine Tyler in her dispute over Hennepin County seizing her home. The case is the last oral argument of the Supreme Court's term.

Impressive! I asked, "How did oral argument go in that home equity theft case?" The case, Tyler, was argued in the Supreme Court yesterday.

Re:Mortgage Rate jump up, slowing down the buyer market on Thursday April 20, 2023 @03:45PM (#35645251)
I don't think the OP was counting on prices to drop; rather, they were waiting for others to be priced out (hence higher supply for them). It's still debatable whether folks will sell in this kind of market, but at least for this buyer higher rates mean less competition on the buyer side.
Re:Price Increases for Developer Tools on Thursday April 20, 2023 @09:45AM (#35639800)
Dev tools are such an interesting product space. On the one hand, you have a group willing to pay for good tools because they're earning a living using them. On the other hand, it's a population almost uniquely able to and interested in making their own tools.

Just this week I saw yet another new diff/merge tool: https://juxtacode.app/

Seems like a tough market to keep moving up in.
