Yeah, it works globally (with varying geologic layer quality). Its heavily inspired by PeakFinder (incredible app), so yeah it names peaks and you can point the reticle at a peak in AR mode and it'll tell you what the peak is made of!
please keep listing these examples out it's genuinely helpful to hear what rings poorly to people. I've been focused on the app build in my spare time and don't have a ton of experience with marketing so the copy is def a relative afterthought and leans sloppy for sure.
the AR stuff leans heavily on ARkit and ARCore APIs but I think similar things are possible with web apis.
oh man a screenshot of the live view on the Canyon would make my day!! please send one over (shane @t flyovercountry.app). Fingers crossed it works for you!
They're in there already (as of a month or so ago)! I'm really excited about AR in Flyover. Especially interested to hear your feedback on the new version having used it for so long!
Shameless other project plug: if you have a flight coming up and are a window seat fan please try out
https://flyovercountry.app ! it has a similar augmented reality view so you can figure out what you're seeing out the airplane window (and a bunch of other fun features)
it's more that the rocks underlying the river are that old! I wonder how I can make this distinction more clear.
Somebody else is working on exactly that! check out Backseat Geologist
there are so many cool glacial stories (and more!) in the midwest! I'm trying to sort out how to better tell them in the app based on the available data.
been thinking of trying a web version! the AR stuff might be tough (I'm relying on ARcore/ARKit a lot) but I think all the pieces are there to make it possible. Good call on the image fallback! The 3d demos are probably heavier than they should be for a landing page hero...
hadn't seen ASTER data before this! looks like some really cool data! I'll look into adding it for sure
oh interesting yeah I was trying to keep the time direction consistent with the squiggle graphic in the main sheet, but I can see how it would read backwards! Maybe I should flip them in both spots.
send some screenshots my way when you try it outside!
wow this is so delightful to read!! glad you two are enjoying it!
oof sorry, thanks for reporting! I've got a limited set of phones to test on so this is super helpful. What is your device/android version?

I've been working on a fun little app that paints geologic maps over landscapes using augmented reality. You can use it to identify what the mapped rocks are, read descriptions about them, and view the earth as it looked when they formed by turning back the continent positions. It spun out of some augmented reality work I was doing on my other side project app - Flyover Country, which tells you...

Just released a ground-up rebuild of our long abandoned app Flyover Country. Its whole thing is to tell you fun things about what you're flying over. I'm particularly excited about the new augmented reality mode that overlays maps and points of interest on your camera view as you point your phone out the window. The 3d window view mode is also pretty neat! It's free and works offline, just load...
No gravity modeled here! Closest to simulating physics it gets is showing orbits.
You're probably right about swinging by a planetarium!

I've been hacking on a universe simulator, modeled on the path that the amazing SpaceEngine worked out over a decade ago, but without its Windows platform restriction. It takes real scientific data where we have it and augments it with procedural generation. So you can fly to e.g. the Whirlpool Galaxy, see a real image of it, but then fly into a 3d model that's created based on the image...
I'll miss their medium-tall size if they're truly gone! Kind of the holy grail for tall skinny people. Anyone have recommendations of brands with similar fits?
Yeah I've been this and it's great. saves me probably tens of hours of wasted time per week and I can still get DMs and see what my friends send me.
I've found the same. And thinking it through, I can't come up with a mechanism for how a few more CO2 molecules bopping around in a sea of nitrogen and oxygen changes anything about how my lungs exchange the CO2 in my body with air around me. These counts are ppm, nothing!
So much of this now and so much more coming.
Three times, while photographing these little critters, I've had them jump straight onto the camera lens. A startling experience!
Not true, they're just defective and degraded quickly, resulting in the odd color.
