I wonder why the heck were they provided / uploaded then. Perhaps just a fast and loose play-out on their part. What I don't understand is how come engineers / scientists working on these are okay with this kind of attitude.

I understand the sentiment behind this argument, but please stop making the argument for freedom to do computing on own devices by making a comparison between desktop PC and pocket computers (mobile devices).
I believe that the bad-faith actors are just gonna force same state of things on desktop PCs as well moving forward, instead of enabling freedom of compute on mobile devices.
