I guess I meant like IndexedDB or alternatives, a database solution for an offline browser or Electron based application. Not sure what options there are these days or best practices.
Re:Ask HN: How do you use Notion? on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @01:05PM (#31755965)
Just started using, feels amazing and really snappy to use (I've seen many complaints in the other direction). Started organizing all my projects and persona things into kanbans, added some tables for subscriptions and other things I rarely keep track of. Loving it so far, especially how many features are for free.
Re:Peloton cuts back on Apple Watch support on Thursday April 15, 2021 @01:23PM (#26823470)
Why doesn't Apple just buy Peloton and add it to the vast network of Apple products that they can slowly kill and release a better version like they did with Beats?
Re:Unusual Stock Trading by Whales in US Congress on Thursday April 15, 2021 @01:19PM (#26823412)
Pelosi makes millions during the 'deadliest pandemic in history' and no one turns an eye. Problem is this will fade away like every single other important topic of these ruling elites, who don't give a single f*k about you or me or any social issues.

They are plainly there to shove through their friends interests, profit off of insider information, and get out without going to jail. Every single one of them.

Hopefully a modern solution to DNS comes knocking sometime soon.
Re:Pylon – Your new favorite discussion platform on Sunday January 10, 2021 @10:38PM (#25724123)
Quite unfortunate, I haven't seen this before but I will be giving it a look.

Our original name 2 years ago was Nexus, but we couldn't get any domain we liked regardless of contacting squatters for years. Oh well.

Re:Pylon – Your new favorite discussion platform on Sunday January 10, 2021 @10:37PM (#25724117)
Hey HN, I have been working on this for years and the final product is finally done.

We did a tiny bit of work to rush it out the door in the wake of 'alternative social network' hype, sure. However, we are extremely proud of what we have created, and do truly believe that our system could foster a better environment for thoughtful discussion going forward.

Our team is monitoring this thread and would love to hear any feedback possible.

With love, H

My mother and grandmother both had it.

My mother worked out on the Peloton every single day, didn't miss one workout, and said that she was fine. She experienced mild symptoms and loss of smell and fevers, but other than that she was fine.

My grandmother was rushed to the hospital because she is in the prime age range and has just about every single previous condition you could imagine for someone pushing 90. She was diagnosed with Covid and Pneumonia, felt like shit for a while, and was release and is now fine.

I am not saying the virus is not real or isn't serious, but at some point we need to stop only looking at number of confirmed cases, and start digging a little deeper before we start spreading all of this rash fear.

Pure lunacy, hope this turns out to be a joke.
Re:1700 Google Employees helping Gov coronavirus website on Friday March 13, 2020 @03:44PM (#22570292)
They are developing an online system to determine whether or not a person who "thinks" they are affected should go get a test done and where they can get it done.
Really love how people are on Twitter and other outlets blaming this action on Trump already when it literally has absolutely nothing to do with him and he has opposed almost all action the Fed has taken so far. Social media and the hive mind read the title and not the information mentality is really getting tiring for me..
Re:U.S. will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days on Thursday March 12, 2020 @10:54AM (#22557483)
Be careful here with an opinion like that, it doesn't fare well most of the time unfortunately.
I really love how an opposing opinion to "the appeal to authority fallacy" has somehow turned into "denying/ignoring the science!", can people not be allowed to dissect and create an opposing opinion or conclusion of the facts that are presented by these figures?
It is interesting that this sentiment keeps popping up regarding the US handling of the situation. The US was fast and early to react, especially compared to the US handling of the swine flu... and people seem to just completely ignore that fact or throw it out the window completely.
I wasn't referring directly to this article with the "fearmongering" opinion. However, in regards to Lipsitch's analysis he uses a lot of "may be, we don't know, etc.." speculation that seems to hint that even the experts don't quite have the full grasp of the situation yet either.

I am all for safety and notifying the public of immediate threats, and taking the correct precautions. But, at this point it seems increasingly that these predictions and analysis are being too quickly released with not enough information so you get great amounts of speculation which therein fuels panic.

That people love to fearmonger for views and ratings, also they want someone to blame that has absolutely nothing to do with the outbreak.

Personally I think this entire thing is blown extremely out of proportion by the media (at least in the US, where we are rated #1 at preventing things like this). Compare it at the same time to swine flu and the results are extremely interesting.

Re:$194 for hand sanitizer? You must be joking on Thursday March 05, 2020 @11:36AM (#22495084)
Go on Amazon, literally half of their listings for sanitizer are "currently unavailable".
Re:The web as a GUI toolkit on Thursday February 13, 2020 @04:45PM (#22321730)
I would look into CRA (https://github.com/facebook/create-react-app). It handles all the Babel/Transpiling/Webpack mumbo-jumbo for you so you can focus on writing code.

Although I would eventually recommend learning how to utilize Babel & Webpack yourself because knowing why and how it works is useful.

I use Azure at work, honestly the Kuberentes/Docker support is pretty awesome. Not to mention the fact that they only run garbage collection after 28 days so if you accidentally destroy a production bucket with user images in it, support can easily get it back to you. (Yes this happened before)

How in any way could me saying that he used buzzwords and quick insults, which he did, with me having "blind devotion" to poll numbers and hatred for him.

I don't hate anyone, and as far as the devotion to poll numbers. I am one of the people that heavily doubts poll numbers, and I am skeptical of these results as well, but I also personally believe that the statement the poll is making is true.

I would be glad to debate the merits, results, methodology, sample size, or any other variable with you if you want.

Re:New High of 90% of Americans Satisfied with Personal Life on Friday February 07, 2020 @02:32PM (#22269853)
This is a really good point that I also think has something to do with "would you rather gain 50 dollars or avoid losing 50 dollars, most people would avoid the loss".

If you are not "losing" anything in daily life, but also not gaining much, you may be inclined to feel better or a least more optimistic.

Re:New High of 90% of Americans Satisfied with Personal Life on Friday February 07, 2020 @02:31PM (#22269832)
Anecdotal at best.. your experience meeting maybe upwards of 50 people across the midwest cannot possibly be taken with the same consideration as a major polling outlet with 2500x the reach.
Re:New High of 90% of Americans Satisfied with Personal Life on Friday February 07, 2020 @02:24PM (#22269729)
Because median household income is on the rise, jobless rates in females are on decline, 8+ million Americans off food stamp dependence, and consumer confidence is at an 18 year high.

People outside of Silicon Valley and Seattle really need to understand that this number is so high not only because of them (like me and you in this case, having great jobs and being single) but also because the average American worker in Buhl, Idaho is seeing their wages increase and their quality of life get better.

THANK YOU.

I had no idea this existed, I will be looking into this.

Been on Firefox since Quantum came out and I have to say I don't miss Chrome one bit. The only honest to god thing that I wish Firefox had was the rounded edges of the top bar design like Chrome..

Devtools are great, performance is great, battery life on MacBook 16in is great, Nightly is awesome (has its ups and downs).

I honestly only ever use Chrome to double-check if my CSS styling is cross-browser. Although I have been using Edge a lot more for this use case, because I can't stand Google.

Re:MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise (2019) on Friday February 07, 2020 @10:40AM (#22266982)
I have a 16 inch, the keyboard is amazing, the display is beautiful, and I have had no thermal problems running multiple VMs, and heavy web development workflows.

Not sure what people are going crazy about regarding the keyboard, it is one of the most amazing ones on a laptop I have used.

Really wish they went with 8 seconds instead of 6 for the videos.

I mean 1 byte = 8 bits after all.

Missed opportunity.
