Re:Google is illegaly cutting forest to build data centers on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:21AM (#50051670)
Either way, you need to complete the EIA. It'd probably show that this was, indeed, a good location for a DC. Not doing the assessment before starting to chop down the trees is the problem here, not that the forest is particularly ecologically valuable.

Re:Open-source self-driving for 325 car models from 27 brands on Saturday January 24, 2026 @02:45AM (#46741812)
That's covered by:

> Some cars it does not support because nobody has been interested in testing it out.

The issue is that the percentage of new cars that could be supported drops as more and more starts encrypting the CAN bus.

Re:The $LANG Programming Language on Wednesday January 14, 2026 @05:13AM (#46614326)
I use that every day at $WORK!
The incentive is to not be poor and have more than the bare minimum.

I, for one, am happy to pay taxes to fund this.

I've never understood the argument that people would choose to live like that. It doesn't make any sense.

Re:Avoid UUIDv4 Primary Keys on Monday December 15, 2025 @12:01PM (#46277089)
Agree, I did a double take on this too.

Values of the same type can be sorted if a order is defined on the type.

It's also strange to contrast "random values" with "integers". You can generate random integers, and they have a "sorting" (depending on what that means though)

Re:Read Your Way Through Hà NộI on Friday October 17, 2025 @07:08AM (#45615317)
Ehm, like in Vietnam's neighbors Laos (ພາສາລາວ) and Cambodia (ខ្មែរ)? Sure Vietnamese used to (a long time ago) be written in its own version of the Chinese script, I'll give you that. But most languages in the region do not use a script derived from Chinese.
> But also, does that mean that you have to pay a bank transfer fee every time you buy anything?

No, not at all. The Swish rails are free to users. But I've never had to pay any transfer fees for domestic transfers anyway. They are just much slower than using Swish (instant transfers) and much more clunky (bank account number etc. vs. phone number/QR-code).

Re:AI Is Different on Saturday August 16, 2025 @05:21AM (#44921672)
I dunno, it seems you have figured it out too, probably before LLMs?

I'd say all speakers of all languages have figured it out and your statement is quite confusing, at least to me.

As much as I'm also annoyed by that phrase, is it really any different from:

- I had to Google it...

- According to a StackOverflow answer...

- Person X told me about this nice trick...

- etc.

Stating your sources should surely not be a bad thing, no?

Re:Interviewing a software engineer who prepared with AI on Tuesday April 08, 2025 @05:40PM (#43626734)
The one without that clause was still fun to think about, so no harm done!

> You have a 50/50 chance of getting it right.

What is the right answer? Doesn't it depend on the DB? Postgres at least shows rows ordered by last updated time (simplified, I know).

I would be fine if it was "... near the top or bottom" though.

(Or maybe this comment is the correct answer?)

You know what? I've noticed the same thing with eating snacks etc., if you don't buy any, you won't eat any. It's amazing!
Re:Show HN: I made a site to tell the time in corporate on Monday February 24, 2025 @02:34PM (#43163880)
Uhm? The site doesn't show what week it is..? It's currently week 9 of 2025, but the site shows W7 of Q1. (Maybe that's what you meant? Searching for the current week in the quarter?)
Re:When Your Last Name Is Null, Nothing Works on Friday February 21, 2025 @04:55AM (#43125807)
Sweden has a sensible solution to this (im sure others do too). When you register a name you specify which part is the tilltalsnamn (lit. name of adress). In your case, the names would be disambiguated as Joe Frank Smith and Joe Frank Smith.

Not all systems use that piece of information, but most do.

It absolutely helps. It tells everyone that the car is on!

Anecdote: coming from a country where this is mandatory, visiting a country where it's not, I almost got run over because I assumed a car was parked when I glanced left before crossing the road.

Of course, might not prove that one or the other is safer, but it did show me how often I subconsciously use headlights as an indicator of off (=> stationary => safe) vs. on (=> potentially moving => potentially a "threat")

Re:Swede dreams: How Sweden is embracing its sleepy side on Tuesday January 28, 2025 @04:41AM (#42850546)
25 days are the mandated minimum. Many have 30 days or more.

Buy not only that, you are entitled to 4 consecutive weeks during the summer months.

Having 4 (or more) weeks off during summer is the norm in Sweden.

So the question is rarely about if you're gonna be off, but rather how you're going to spend that time.

Re:Why is zero plural? (2024) on Wednesday January 22, 2025 @06:47AM (#42791715)
This is incredibly confusing. Of course the plural of zero (as a noun) is zero(e)s. But then you state that you understand that it's not about the noun, and still go on to say that the answers sharing your view are wrong..?
Re:Self driving 1993 Volvo with open pilot on Sunday January 05, 2025 @03:35AM (#42600522)
There are constant debates about them in Sweden. Especially after fatal accidents or incidents involving teens driving at speeds above 100 kph. [1][2]

The original law considered tractors and other farm equipment, AIUI. You can drive these so called A-traktor with only a moped or tractor license when you're 15.

Re:X41 Reviewed Mullvad VPN on Friday December 13, 2024 @04:09AM (#42407096)
But it's not free and legal where they are from, obviously, since they wouldn't need the VPN in that case.
Re:Turkish language has a gossip tense on Saturday October 12, 2024 @05:13PM (#41822668)
Right, because "present" is the tense here and "perfect" the aspect.

Re:Dokku: My favorite personal serverless platform on Monday August 26, 2024 @02:52PM (#41360405)
The actual meaning of words is defined by how people use them. Serverless has a very specific, well-defined meaning despite its seemingly contradictory etymology.
Re:Caltrain's New Electric Trains on Friday August 23, 2024 @03:25AM (#41326842)
Sounds like Sweden, except the chaotic booking system.

I don't think I've ever seen a diesel train, ever. In fact, for a long time I was (blissfully) unaware of their existence and the fact that they do exist still surprises me...

Only English is not a problem in Sweden (especially Stockholm), and we hire foreign engineers all the time. Some companies have a majority of foreign born engineers, with a wide range of backgrounds (Brazilian, Russian, Spanish, American, etc.)

Ofc, salary comparisons are hard to make vs. the US, but you can live comfortably on an engineer's salary in Sweden.

Some of the biggest "modern" companies include DICE, Klarna and Spotify. More traditional ones are Ericsson, Scania and Volvo.

Hiring is a bit slow right now though, so that has to be kept in mind.

The fancy name is "false dichotomy", and you're completely right.
