Re:You Are Going to Die on Monday January 21, 2013 @11:59PM (#5095618)
We certainly start to come to grips with our own mortality as we age. At 28, I'm having thoughts and concerns about illnesses I never thought I would, even though I'm certainly more aware of what I put into my body than I was just years ago.

I remember a conversation with my mom a few years back, where she started with something like "If I had died a few years ago." That was unfathomable to me because the thought of losing my parents is something I've always wrestled with and my mom is still very much youthful and carefree despite her advancing age.

Its a great piece that highlights the fact that at sometime we can and do come to terms with the fact that we won't be here forever. It's a sobering thought, but one that gives us perspective on life about the things that matter. In addition, realizing that we are mortal makes us want to leave behind a legacy, whether its a family, a product, or a book, we all want to be remembered for something.

I think we all come to this realization at different points in our lives.

Definitely an inspirational post for those of us just starting out.
Re:Show HN: "Programming is for Anyone" on Monday December 05, 2011 @11:46AM (#3315306)
This is pretty awesome so far. Many introductory programming texts do not show the user practical things they can do with programming, or if they do make an attempt, they tend to gloss over the details involved.

Ask HN: Does anyone need a website built?

Hey HN,I'm a student in dire straits. I was recently accepted into college for a computer systems technology program, after being told I was on a waiting list and my chances of being accepted were slim to none. The problem with that is that I have not been working for the past few months since I just moved to Western Canada and my tuition fee is due in a couple of weeks.I have already applied...

Yes, I tend to get discouraged at the photoshop hurdle.
Re:DHH: Un-Manage Your Employees on Tuesday January 25, 2011 @09:14AM (#2139067)
I agree, good managers are supposed to manage people, not tasks.
This is great news! In most cases the materials on offer were sparse, but an initiative like this will make it really useful both for autodidacts and instructors looking for materials.
Re:The Cover-Up Culture on Monday January 10, 2011 @12:27PM (#2089062)
I work for a government department that condones the "cover-up" culture. We maintain a website and monitor web analytics, yet we never report on areas where the site is doing poorly or could use some improvement. We report on the metrics that do not really measure ROI.

As a result, the website never improves or really evolves with the current trends in web development. It really makes me wonder about the usefulness of having a website if the cover-up culture is valued more than accurate reporting, even if that reporting isn't always the story that upper-management would like to hear.

Re:Doing Your Best and Tips on Continuous Improvement on Tuesday January 04, 2011 @10:54AM (#2067358)
This is a very sound advice, probably the best in terms of where to spend your money. Don't get a cheap laptop, lousy pen or bad-looking notebook. If you follow this rule, you will be always using the best tools.

Good article, but the best tools to get started are the tools that you have at hand regardless of cost.
