"The Snell Helmet Standard is Meaningless"

Worth pointing out that HPE also acquired Aruba Networks and Juniper Networks – not sure how both those networking portfolios look like post-acquisition.
Oil burning was a common problem for early S2000s (specifically AP1 motors) and AFAIK (having been an owner for 10+ years and read nearly every s2ki/s2kca forum post over the last 20 years), the problem was never truly solved in a documented, reproducible way.

Replacing the valve stems, seals, changing oil brands/weights, etc. have all been a bit unscientific and for me, the only thing that’s “worked” was not overfilling (as anxious owners tend to do), checking early and often, and ensuring I read the dipstick correctly (the trick on this motor is to read both sides of the dipstick).

Unfortunately, Honda always held firm on the "1 litre per 1000 miles is considered normal” and the problem went away with the F22C/AP2 motor. I've learned to live with it for an otherwise extremely reliable ownership experience.

To quote the late, great Anthony Bourdain – it's about "the notion of universal awesomeness."

The likes of Waffle House (and In N Out Burger – another Bourdain favorite) are not supposed to be "the best diner" or "the best burger" – but there is something magical about them that many of us can't quite put our finger on (and many don't understand at all).

In terms of keeping it simple, but having a responsive design that covers mobile/tablet/desktop -- do these count?

Solid doc! I think I found it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=236AWbnDtBc

I also really loved this article on the food-side of Punjabi-Mexican culture:

California’s Lost (and Found) Punjabi-Mexican Cuisine https://www.eater.com/2019/4/23/18305011/punjabi-mexican-mig...

You can search the NSF.org certifications here, specifically NSF/ANSI 53 and NSF/ANSI 58:

https://info.nsf.org/Certified/DWTU/Listings.asp?ProductFunc...

https://www.nsf.org/news/pfoa-pfos-reduction-claims-requirem...

P.S. Note the "facility" where these products are manufactured are also listed. One might also want to note that [replacement] filters may also have different country origins.

Loved this story. Is this a peek of your site on the Wayback Machine? The late 90s and early 2000s were such a magical time for the early web!

I run an indoor sensor from a different company and it definitely allows me to measure whenever the neighbors are doing yardwork, or there's a fire down the street, etc.

My sensor is indoor, but I am curious about picking up an outdoor sensor to see if I can find any long-term correlation between a train passing and increase in emissions.

When life imitates art; highly recommend "The Hunt for Red October" (adapted from Tom Clancy's 1984 novel) about the Soviet Unions' secret development of a new type of submarine that proves to be undetectable to passive sonar.
Re:Ask HN: Why do sites insist on local language? on Thursday January 26, 2023 @09:55PM (#34541919)
We run a high-traffic (millions per day) website and found that for certain cohorts, we saw up to 25% of users in Canada and Australia identifying themselves a "en-us" (English United States) from their default browser language... The number is shockingly high.
Re:Ask HN: What's a good home router? on Wednesday January 11, 2023 @03:11PM (#34343932)
In a sea of recommendations for Mikrotik, TP-Link, UniFi, etc. -- all routers I was looking at getting myself -- I'm hesitant to share the blissful state of https://firewalla.com

I had crossed the bridge of being tired of configuring OpenWRT, DD-WRT, Tomato, etc. over the years. I just wanted something that worked reliably and was intuitive to both setup and manage.

With the Firewalla Purple and their iOS app, I've never seen such good UI/UX in a networking product, and it's been a great experience (I recommend the Purple or the Gold).

Even the late Anythony Bourdain could espouse on the greatness of an "objectively terrible" Wafflehouse meal.

There's a time and place for everything, and even the snobbiest of us food snobs can appreciate the time and place for the likes of Little Ceasars, Costco Pizza, Wafflehouse, et al.

Yes! Shoutout to Phong.com. They had a ton of crazy Photoshop and web design tutorials and were pushing the boundaries of design on the web in the early, pre/post-CSS days -- inevitably kicking off my career in web and tech.

Anyone remember using emp.gif (empty.gif) to help align table-based layouts with images?

P.S. I still think this "eplastic" tutorial is one of the prettiest things I've seen: https://archive.phong.com/tutorials/eplastic

Some blood is sweeter than others.

-Bram Stoker, or someone.

I've seen the commercial traps that run off propane tanks (and the mechanics only last 1-2 years until they breakdown) – they seem far too wasteful.

This idea seems ingenious, especially the part about using seltzer water for the CO2 (which will last 3-4 hours).

Thanks for sharing!

Watched his cacio pepe. He doubled down on reminding to always use dry pasta. Not bad. Subscribed.

This is called the "Leidenfrost effect." The other possible health downside to doing this in a stainless steel pan, as referenced elsewhere in these comments, is the overheating of certain cooking oils beyond their smokepoint and into temperatures that turn them potentially bad for your health.

For the data-visualization curious, here's a fun map:

Clicking on your location/vicinity shows a tooltip with your "Bortle Dark Sky Scale" number, which can be referenced here:

Apparently I've lived in a class 6 or 7 my whole life, and only recall seeing shooting stars camping out in the Sierras, e.g. Yosemite, which is still only a class 2!
