Re:Trump expresses doubts about security of all computers on Sunday January 01, 2017 @09:51AM (#13295887)
He was communicating out of band to unknown parties that his communications are being monitored.
Re:How to ask good questions on Saturday December 31, 2016 @06:53PM (#13293862)
"If you haven't already, would you mind reading about HN's approach to comments and site guidelines?"

This question does:

   - Identify terms you don’t understand
   - Ask questions where the answer is a fact
does not:

   - Do some research // profile flag user accessed faq
   - Decide who to ask // ^
Happy New Year, HN!

Problem for you but imho one of the key motivations for getting rid of cash.

Our civil liberties are increasingly dependent on the "good will" of governments. Globally they play-act their conflicts, but every single one of them agrees that their citizens need to be monitored 24/7.

Digital cash in combination with IoT monitoring of infrastructure such as utility metrics, and your friendly big-brother in your mobile device likely will make it extremely difficult for a bartering economy/black-market to emerge as well.

A global Permanent Establishment™ is being constructed right in front of us but alas we're all distracted by phony spats between geopolitical actors who are all (and their families as you can see) stakeholders in this Permanent Establishment™.

I was just musing earlier today on what if IEC, IEEE, IETF, ACM, leading schools, etc., came out and drew the red lines of what engineers are willing and are unwilling to do. That's all it takes.
Re:What Is Abstract Algebra? [video] on Wednesday December 28, 2016 @06:28PM (#13274586)
I guess this is a whimsical aside/

I looked that up and got this sample of that book: http://www.cs.cornell.edu/courses/CS5860/2011fa/documents/Gr...

Looking up Stepanov's book, landed on his slide deck about the book.

Interestingly enough, both are about the remainder algorithm, and Gries' mentions a "large program" of "3000 lines", which reminded me of the other comment and the 3000000 to 30000 figure.

It's a great question. Reminds me of Uber and its new policy of monitoring location of customers few minutes after drop off "to improve service".

It is also true that if Alexa was listening in on conversations so as to have "social conversation context" for "improved processing of commands" ... well.

I can not agree with applicability of that aphorism in this case.

We have had a very vocal feedback loop of raising issues ("stupidity", "misunderstandings", "neglect") with OP conference as one type of such feedback.

Nothing has been corrected. Do you happen to know of another aphorism that covers the "willful stupidity", "willful neglect" etc. and what it all means (as I certainly don't desire hitting London.)

Obviously those with their hands on the production pipeline of tech disagree with the feedback. Is that really a controversial observation? Really?

> Its like the technologist handed STASI their wet dream while trying to improve the world...

The error here is assuming that for all technologists "[handing] STASI their wet dream" and "trying to improve the world" are mutually exclusive. I am beginning to think they knew[/know] exactly what they were[/are] doing.

That is true and that makes GM just another intelligence asset then (like the rest of the entertainment business).

some poor schmuck new to FP will come around, read that and scratch head saying "isn't that iterating?"

Roy Cohn the humanitarian. Funny. That should tell you all you need to know about the Mr. Singer and the New Yorker.
