Re:How to run a city builder on 16 MHz on Saturday October 24, 2026 @02:09PM (#50223678)
Interesting trivia: Do you know that VAX 780 from 1978 is still supported by CURRENT(2026!) version of NetBSD? :D

First modern 32 bit CPU with MMU.

Re:Quake – 30th Anniversary Update on Friday August 07, 2026 @09:08AM (#49209838)
Back then most common CPUs were 386 and 486DX - in real life they can't decode 44khz stereo mp3 file in realtime[1].

Only later Pentium 233mmx could handle mp3 decode in background + game (UT or Q3 Arena lets say).

[1]. Yes it is possible to play mp3 at 386SX 33mhz using magic with mplayer or mpg123(?) or (forgot the name) but it needs to be downgraded to 11khz, mono and other tricks.

Re:Ask HN: Are You Happy? on Thursday February 15, 2024 @09:30PM (#39392398)
No. Unemployed, single, depressed. With job and women life was so simple.

Therapy and antidepressants does not help.

Ask HN: 36 months of unemployment and depression. How to go back?

Hi. I was fired around 36 months ago from my beloved job. I always made the maximum possible evaluations, and I was pooe but highly motivated programmer.Due to the stress I'm afraid to seek the job as a python backend developer, as I truly believe that I lack modern skills and previous employment was too focused on telecom things. What skills should I learn? Should I learn and then apply or...

why your login is green mate?
Total apocalipse is not possible (Earth is so large that it's impossible nuke EVERYTHING and EVERYWHERE.

But if this is just experiment "what if" those are thing that I would suggest to do:

- Forget about computers and programming and gadgets

- DO NOT STAY IN BUNKER, INSTEAD FIND FRIENDS!

- Focus on FARMING as team

- Scavending for potatoes, grain etc - for seeds!

- FARMING

- FARMING

- FARMING

- FARMING

- FARMING

- HARVEST

- FOOD = LIFE

What you really need is:

- water (well or river)

- water filter (from sand, rocks, and wood ash) for human consumtion.

- fire (easy - a lot of lighters laying around, if not use your glasses!)

- fuck cars and fuel - you are not going anywhere as you need to do FARMING

- CORN, POTATOES, WHEAT production (parts that we dont eat are perfect food for sheeps or goats!)

- SHEEPS, GOATS production (milk and meat!)

- SHELTER: there must be plenty empty houses in this scenario (everyone died!).

- Do forming for few years. Then you grow and grow. You could sell food in futre and rebuild society, maybe as agroculture baron. :)

OPTIONAL: [you dont need electricity as farmer!]

- electricy from solar panels ("borrow" them) or from wind (you can use any electrical engine for it! For example from washing machine :). This stuff is hard but doable.

Higher comp. always.
Vast majority of them once per year.
>Also, important: did you clearly indicate you wanted/expected one beforehand?

yup

Ask HN: I did not get pay rise – as only person in team. Should I quit?

Hi.I'm sole developer working in some niche industry in team with 9 engineers.Today our CEO announced that 80% of people in our company (thousands) received pay rise(due the inflation etc.).It is first time in 4 years that I did not get any pay rise.Just month ago I asked(via email) for feedback from my boss and he praised my skills, ambitions and working speed.Reason that I did not get pay...

I'm doing the same. In some companies you can't just get ssh to outside world, or download some stuff from github... So I stick to defaults and I try to do development on single machine.
>everyone I know is working 2-3 hours

I'm from central Europe as well.

You live in bubble. That's it.

Same here mate :)

That's the way towards homelessness.
Re:How to Live a Happy Life (2016) on Monday April 04, 2022 @08:17AM (#30905759)
>How do you define happiness in the first place?

By measuring level of dopamines, and other neurotransmitters in brain when person claims to be happy. Easy and precise.

Re:Cython is 20 on Monday April 04, 2022 @07:52AM (#30905569)
We had to parse dozeon of 20GB files daily with super complex structure and not in linear structure. With Cython (finally we migrated to Pypy) we gained around 20-60x speedup.
Re:Post-SSRI sexual dysfunction on Thursday October 28, 2021 @04:47PM (#29031741)
Don't worry too much, you are not alone mate, and it's perfectly normal to ADORE sex!

That why it is at the same level as breathing, eating and shitting in:

ps. Having sex in rubber with prostitute is safer in terms of HPV/HSF infection then with average female in UK without any protection (especially with Y gen) :) So I would not worry about it THAT much.

Re:Open IP over VHF/UHF Part 5 on Thursday October 28, 2021 @04:25AM (#29023689)
Why can't we just use TCP over AX.25?

This "problem" (TCP over HF/VHF) has been solved around 1979(sic!).

This is interesting. May I ask how do you do it from software poinr of view? As for CPU and memory for sure it is possible, but I'm more interested about how do you connect into exechange/broker?

Contiki, SLIP, PPP, or maybe some ethernet expansion ?

Re:Is going to the office a broken way of working? on Monday October 11, 2021 @05:35PM (#28833385)
Amen! You are not alone. :)
Re:Offline First on Wednesday September 29, 2021 @03:27AM (#28691149)
Amen brother! Nothing worse then some JS based APP using 2G/3G in Africa. Its not about speed but latency and packet drops :/ No one optimizes for this stuff. Makes the internet unusable even if you have nice bursts of 100kb-2mb/s sometimes.
Re:FreeBSD 11.4 End-of-Life on Sunday September 19, 2021 @01:20PM (#28586068)
There is no catch. I'm using it for a while without much problems.
Re:Time Card and PTP on a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 on Friday September 03, 2021 @10:46AM (#28404911)
Or you could just have your own atomic clock. It is not uncommon, and not complicated as you might think[1].

Other methods for obtaining times are:

- GPS: Satellite receiver for the Global Positioning System

- GNS: Combined GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/BeiDou satellite receiver (L1 frequency band), can also be used for mobile applications

- GNS-UC: GPS and Galileo Satellite Receiver with Up Converter for Meinberg GPS Antenna/Converter

- PZF: DCF77 correlation receiver for middle europe

- MSF: Long wave receiver for Great Britain

- WWVB: Long wave receiver for the US time signal

- TCR: Time code receiver for IRIG A/B, AFNOR or IEEE1344 codes

- MRS: (GPS, PPS, 10MHz, NTP): Multi Reference Source - several reference source

Every telecom too. LTE and 5G requires PTP in general.

They do not target x86
Re:286 vs. 386SX on Thursday August 19, 2021 @05:04PM (#28239352)
Woth to know that NetBSD(up to 4.0 ?) and Linux up to kernel 2.4(?) can work on 386SX with 4 MB of RAM.

It's intresting that for some reason before ~2002 it was possible to run Linux(up to 2.0?) and NetBSD (for sure 1.6.1) at just 2MB of RAM.

For some reason most modern operating systems requires 4MB of ram - even if kernel size is far less (like 700kb), as there is SOMETHING hardcoded in the kernel to prevent boot under 4MB of RAM. I think this could be due the "large memory pages" switch from 4kb to 4MB - but I never found anyone knowledge enough to confirm it :(

Anyone?

Re:America’s losing battle against diabetes on Friday August 13, 2021 @12:25PM (#28170988)
>Easiest solution to diabetes: Sugar tax.

Wrong. You should BAN High-fructose corn syrup. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-fructose_corn_syrup

It is way more harmful than natural sugar.

It is not banned yet because:

- It is made from corn, and corn is heavily substituted by US government.

- It is super cheap (high volume of corn available)

- It is not only slightly sweet but also prevents spoilage (that's why they add it to US "bread" !)

- It is good anti-oxidizer

- It is good and cheap liaison
