Re:BloomTech, previously Lambda School, cuts half of staff on Friday December 02, 2022 @01:31PM (#33834644)
That's a fair point. From what I've seen it really comes down to the hours you put in outside of class and your own side projects. Being able to speak the language, walk through the stack you used and why, issues you ran into and how you overcame them.
Re:BloomTech, previously Lambda School, cuts half of staff on Friday December 02, 2022 @12:31AM (#33827184)
I've been on the fence on going to a bootcamp for years, since the dev bootcamp days because I don't feel I could complete a CS degree given all that math. I've also been in various FAANG companies the past 5 years and while not in a dev/swe role I have picked up some things as I go. The front end and user interfaces is something I've been interested for a while so I think I may pivot to front end dev or some kind of automation engineer for UI testing. Are there any release engineers here?
So then don't comply, get fired. #StrengthInNumbers
Re:Adding a hinge to a Game Boy that God never intended on Tuesday November 15, 2022 @03:02PM (#33614241)
If I may ask... what specialization are you in? and is it the same thing you started off in? I've been thinking of pivoting and have narrowed it down to 1-3 niches, but also don't have a degree but currently working in a FAANG company.
As someone that used to work on the Play Store team many many moons ago... a lot of that was outsourced to overseas which resulted in much slower response time. Here stateside we had a lot of metrics in place to fast response. Typically your app would get reviewed the same day. Not sure what it's like now but the managers were incompetent back then even so.
Re:$600M Binance Hack on Thursday October 06, 2022 @09:20PM (#33116324)
I left binance and staked my crypto instead. Binance customer service does not exist and their website and app are broken.
As someone interested in Front End, and to some extent also Backend so in that regard, full stack, please do start a wiki.
Re:Apple's iPhone 14 Pro Max has best display in the world on Thursday September 29, 2022 @07:58PM (#33029010)
I took a look at the article and didn't see 'repairability' or 'replacement' as a benchmark. Shrugs
No real surprise here.
As a former eng at Tesla, I don't consider Tesla a luxury vehicle--as the title would imply.
those pandemic loans certainly helped too.
Re:AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) on Wednesday September 07, 2022 @04:52PM (#32756666)
Once my OG AirPods crap out, I'll be going wired most likely. Already have ChiFi IEM's that blow the AirPods out of the water.
Re:YKK zippers: Why so many designers use them (2012) on Thursday September 01, 2022 @12:25AM (#32671971)
I prefer the button like on levis, but maybe that's just me.
Negative reps (lowering dumbbell) is often overlooked in weight lifting. I see people trying to lift fast but have bad form. Negatives are where real strength and muscle is built. See: Dorian Yates.
Re:Wet/Dry Vacuum Buying Guide (2019) on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @02:37PM (#32416563)
Since I already had a ryobi drill, I bought a ryobi battery powered vacuum that uses the same batteries. It's not going to be stronger than the ridgid or shopvacs but it definitely gets the job done for cleaning my car.
thanks for the tl;dr. I hate clickbait
Re:US Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force on Wednesday August 03, 2022 @12:28PM (#32333805)
It kind of goes both ways, politicians "allowing" themselves to be lobbied by big telecom.
Re:Coding as a greybeard on Tuesday August 02, 2022 @12:38PM (#32320961)
I guess I should consider myself lucky that if I shave my facial hair (in 30's) I knock off about 15 years. Just getting a haircut alone I always get told I have a youthful looking face. All my colleagues have always guessed I was younger than them.

For aging, I have heard great things about creatine supplementation for cognitive benefits (lots of research backs this supplement and it's relatively safe)

Are they* deliberately trying to sabotage themselves over at $NFLX ?
Re:Instagram has become qvc 2.0 on Wednesday July 20, 2022 @01:47PM (#32169527)
For me my instagram went from being a place to share photos/videos with other creatives to my friends and family sending memes and videos they find funny. It's actually allowed me to remain connected to old coworkers from as far back as 7-8 years ago.
Re:QA workers at Blizzard Albany are unionizing on Wednesday July 20, 2022 @01:40PM (#32169417)
This is more true for game testers/QA (notorious for low pay and turnover) than software QA in other industries. SDET's are developers that focus on testing and get paid on par with devs.
Re:Admit It, Squirrels Are Just Tree Rats on Tuesday July 12, 2022 @05:33PM (#32075973)
Squirrels are a pain just as rats are but in another way. They're all around the apartments I live in and constantly get into our plants and destroy them. I spray cayenne pepper and other deterrents once in a while but they don't always work unless you keep at it multiple times a day.
Re:Ask HN: Where are all the senior front end engineers? on Wednesday July 06, 2022 @05:05PM (#32006826)
I've been tinkering with the idea of switching to FE, preferably, full stack second.
Time is the best cure.

Find ways to stay distracted. How you make it through these times is what will build you stronger mentally and physically. Maybe do some traveling, take up a hobby. For example, a lot of people that take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or a martial art say it changed their life positively mentally and physically via losing a ton of weight. Me personally, I'd take this time to go off the grid a bit, go hiking, camping of some sort and clear out my mind.

Ridiculous. Pay property taxes and still told what to do with YOUR property? The code also says "to prevent amassing vehicles" but this is just ONE vehicle. I'm also pretty sure that there is a much bigger and more productive way to preserve neighborhood aesthetics like you know... those tents, fecal matter and needles on the streets of San Francisco?
Re:Ask HN: Where should I consider moving? on Tuesday June 28, 2022 @01:43PM (#31910696)
It's difficult to say right now considering a pending recession. Whenever that may happen. Soon?
Re:People are using TikTok as their primary search engine on Wednesday June 22, 2022 @04:08PM (#31841227)
IMO, reddit > tiktok for search engine purposes.
Re:I fucking hate Jira on Monday June 20, 2022 @04:04PM (#31815105)
Thankfully my company built its own internal tool similar to Jira. Unfortunately this is not the case for other companies or smaller companies since it can be cost-prohibitive.
Re:Ask HN: Tesla owners – what's your feedback on Thursday June 09, 2022 @07:20PM (#31688207)
Nope. Fun to drive sure... but overrated and quality has gone down. Those panel gaps, yikes. Source: Former engineer for Tesla.
Re:Elon Musk tells Tesla staff: return to office or leave on Wednesday June 01, 2022 @12:23PM (#31584222)
It would be hilarious if employees took him up on his offer and left.
