Re:Stop sending emails for real time requests on Wednesday January 08, 2014 @05:33AM (#7022743)
I prefer to use email for most communications as it makes it a whole lot easier to pull up past conversations. If I'd had communication in the form of calls, texts, IM's (probably on multiple clients) as well as email, it'd probably be more difficult to pull up any information that I may need later on.

Using email alone allows me to search for specific conversations, and not have the trouble of losing or having great difficulty finding conversations.

I do occasionally use Skype and IRC, but I know which people I communicate with on these platforms, and keep on top of documenting anything I may later need to refer to.

I agree that if you need something urgently, then a call can be great. However, for general communication, I see no issue with using email.

I think it'd be a more interesting topic to discuss how to efficiently use subject headings, as I've often had important emails slip under the radar, and less important emails demand some form of urgency that isn't existent.

Re:VPN.sh - £1/year VPN in 21 worldwide locations on Sunday December 29, 2013 @04:51PM (#6981576)
This is currently in review - however generally this is seen as a "no-no" if the passwords are also stored in plaintext - which they are not. Hope this helps a little, and the fact that it's in review may give some confidence that it's actually being looked in to.

No worries :) feel free to share it around, as it's likely to disappear before 2014 starts!

Offer is still running - further information on the specific offer than just the WHT link can be found here: http://pwyw.vpn.sh

Nice find on the WHT link though :D

Re:VPN.sh are offering a VPN for £2/year. Yes, £2 yearly D: on Wednesday October 30, 2013 @10:06AM (#6640584)
Nope, follow the original link and click checkout upon the "Yearly" selection. It'll automatically add the promotion code on the next page, dropping the price down to £2/year :)

I'd guess it'd be an idea to never publish yours or a family members name, address or any other personal information to any website or sign up form. Ever.

Then use some form of anonymous payment for anything you buy.

Ensure all of your browsing is done through Tor and/or a VPN.

Don't cache anything, just in case you get raided.

Also, always use a PC in the dark. It works. Trust me.

Ah, so I see. It's good to know you got it working though!
Re:Instant PHP and CSS search on Friday March 01, 2013 @08:45PM (#5308090)
I assume by the "back button" you are referring to the text saying "Voke" on each page?

I wouldn't have clicked it until looking for a back button. Might be worth leaving it as text, and maybe placing a back button to the left of it? Personally I think something similar to the back button in Windows Phone would look nice. Something like the button here: http://i.msdn.microsoft.com/dynimg/IC505392.png

I like how it underlines whether it's CSS or PHP too :P, and the link to the source at the bottom. Very handy little tool. Did it take long to make?

Really like this. Simpler than searching PHP documentation if only needing to know something quickly. Nice idea :)
Re:Ask HN: Reliable vps? on Thursday January 17, 2013 @09:40PM (#5076736)
Who have you tried? I've been with many providers who advertise at Low End Box and most have been fine.

Edis, BuyVM, Hostigation, Prometeus and RamNode are some of the most respected and reliable providers there.

Re:Ask HN: Reliable vps? on Thursday January 17, 2013 @09:34PM (#5076724)
Any of the following will be suitable:

http://www.hostigation.com http://www.buyvm.com http://www.ramnode.com http://www.prometeus.net http://www.edis.at http://www.severdragon.com http://www.ipxcore.com http://www.bluevm.com

All of the above offer VPS's for really low prices.. Most of those have packages for under $3 per month.

Check out LowEndBox (http://www.lowendbox.com) and LowEndTalk (http://www.lowendtalk.com) for more cheap VPS services as most of the main cheap VPS providers can be found on there :).

Re:Ask HN: Is app.net worth it? on Tuesday January 01, 2013 @12:41AM (#4991965)
Looks like it will be ridiculously dead. Would you REALLY do this just because of advertising on Twitter? Who even needs social networking..
