Re:The Power to Judge Startup Ideas on Saturday September 07, 2019 @10:54AM (#20904088)
After reading the mixpanel part, I can’t understand why Dropbox got funding given Box existed. Or why Azure, when their was aws.Why Lyft when there was Uber?
Re:Olive: A free non-linear video editor on Wednesday May 22, 2019 @03:30PM (#19984618)
I’m curious, why are these tools called “nonlinear“?
Yes, I think it makes sense. I even think internship shouldn’t be a student only program.
I grew up in China and have lived in the U.S. for 10 years. One of the reasons that I moved to the U.S. was because of the fear for censorship. It’s been getting worse since 2005. I don’t think the country is heading towards the right direction and I think it is repeating some of the mistakes it had made before in history.
Making phones is different from helping censorship.

Although admittedly, their phone operation is also controversial by letting works work extensively.

I don’t understand your logic.

A company making toothbrush is different from a company helps censorship.

The point is what a company does, not where it operates.

if this is true, google has lost its soul! So disappointed...

I will have to switch to duck duck go

contents on instagram are toxic.
Re:China’s secret goal is to crush Silicon Valley on Tuesday May 22, 2018 @07:00PM (#17130165)
Don’t think a place that has a blocked internet can ever achieve that. Silicon Valley is built by liberals.
Re:Ask HN: Quit job to avoid burnout? on Friday March 16, 2018 @11:19AM (#16601240)
I’m in a similar situation and considering quitting. I also have had a mvp built for a saas idea but I don’t know if that can give me financial independence. Maybe 6 months later, after spending too much savings, I will need to look for a new job again.

I’m being approached by a startup also. What they promised (the work I will be doing) seems to be nice. But I am hesitating. Don’t want to be burnt out again.

VCs seem to care a Stanford/google background more than anything else. They should be punished by watching “moneyball” non-stop for a week.
Re:Ask HN: Why is Python so popular for ML/DS? on Monday January 22, 2018 @05:10PM (#16208457)
To be honest, I don’t understand its popularity.

For example, I was trying to understand a batch normalization function defined as

def batchnorm_forward(x, gamma, beta, eps):

I can’t tell if gamma/beta are scalar or vector?

Re:Head of china internet censorship fall on Sunday November 26, 2017 @02:41PM (#15782578)
Don’t think he fell because of performing censorship. Someone will replace him, and the censorship will continue. Nothing to celebrate here.
Today, Asians are required to achieve higher grades to be accepted to colleges. How is this different?
Re:Ask HN: Why did Google turn me down? on Monday August 14, 2017 @06:10PM (#15013476)
don't get attached to this type of things. sometimes they reject people, because certain team doesn't have budget anymore, i.e. not your fault. sometimes, this is just pure luck. tech interview is kinda broken. I know capable people being rejected by google, I also know incompetent people got accepted by google and Facebook. As an example, my friend got to know a fellow engineer during google's orientation. That engineer told my friend that he/she heard that google usually won't fire engineers due to performance issues. So he/she had decided to fool around. that's how fucked up the interview process is. people with passion and real experiences get filtered out. people who prepare the interviews as exams get accepted.

the right strategy is applying for many companies all at once. overlap your preparation effort. don't just try and count on one company.

As a Chinese, I feel offended when I saw the Chinese text sample you used to demonstrate text rendering reads "Do not eat dogs.", whereas the English counterpart is "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

Yes, there are sub-cultures in China that would accept dog eating, but I hate it and don't support it. And the majority of the people don't support it. There are activists in China fighting for the criminalization of dog eating.

Assuming you don't read Chinese and you copied and pasted the text from somewhere else. A suggested replacement is "一只敏捷的狐狸跳过一只懒狗。", which is the direct translation of "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

However, a pangram is impossible to find in Chinese, given its alphabet size.

Ask HN: Should hw startup raise money from family and friends?

I'm exploring some startup idea with some friends.to be honest, I'm not that into this idea.a prototype is being worked on, and functional, but not polished.the original idea was joining some incubator and looking for angel investment. however there were some setbacks.now, the other two team members felt the difficulty of raising money, so they kinda have made up their mind to quit job at a...

all I want to see is a picture and yet, they don't show you any.

this is the fourth time I got tricked by similar articles on this topic.
