Unrelated but can I ask how Lwn is funded?
Isn't the high cost a natural barrier?

Hello HN. I thought it would be cool to have something like Github Copilot that works in any application. So I made this thing where you can select the text you're typing (in any application) and press a shortcut key (Ctrl + . by default, not configurable yet) to include the selection into a prompt, send to an LLM (right now it's only OpenAI), and possibly insert the response back into the...

Re:Google is shutting down Stadia on Friday September 30, 2022 @05:05AM (#33032640)
Just curious, what happens to the engineers when a project is cancelled at Google? Mass exodus to other projects? Do they get notice? Are they left with weeks of nothing to do while they search for other teams to join?

People are ego driven but they're also profit driven. Industry and academia are paying attention to security now so that's where hackers are going. Capital eats everything.

Existing energy industry is too entrenched in current technology to innovate? Widely publicized nuclear energy disasters prevents popular support? I don't know but this guy seems pretty smart

Should iMessage do what Facebook messenger does and request receiver permission before letting a new contact message them?

I don't get it? What's the significance of this? I thought the left one is bam/pow and the right one is a blob?

We watch anime so we know what we're talking about.

That makes sense the market is more competitive in USA so they provide better service to the customers.

Re:We moderns are status-drunk on Tuesday June 29, 2021 @03:14AM (#27672815)
People were always status drunk. Maybe we didn't always have the language to talk about it? Isn't status a modern psychology/sociology term?

Rome fell because their economy depended on expansion of the empire and managing a huge empire is hard when you don't have Internet. God bless the Internet.

> They're not building fusion reactors super fast, they're not building things we don't have super fast. They're building things that we were building a hundred years ago…super fast.

It was the Chinese that built the railways here and they were building it the opposite of "super fast".

> I'm in favor of everyone having train stations and freeway systems, it's all good. But the American freeway system got built out starting in the 1930s; it's been a long time since that kind of thing has amazed us.

This is the reason we can't have nice things isn't it. What a waste of time I want 10 minutes of my life back.

Replace public education with this.
Re:The Most Dangerous Censorship on Tuesday June 22, 2021 @08:11PM (#27599084)
Hong Kong got more coverage than Minneapolis protests as well. It was only after Hong Kong protests were proudly displaying their racism to Black people that we stopped covering them. Which is hilarious to say the least. But I guess you have a point because Minneapolis is a smaller city.

Sorry Snowden your suffering is insignificant because you're just one guy. :(
Re:The Most Dangerous Censorship on Tuesday June 22, 2021 @03:43PM (#27596237)
Free Snowden. Free Hong Kong. Why do we care more about Hong Kong than Snowden? Snowden needs to work on his marketing.

Re:Unveiling our new Quantum AI campus on Wednesday May 19, 2021 @03:35PM (#27213382)
I think the point is it lowers security by a factor of 2 in the exponent. Going from 2^64 to 2^63 lowers the amount of time to bruteforce a key by half.
