Re:Is there life after FAANG? on Saturday January 11, 2025 @03:03PM (#42668541)
Have you told your manager you hate what you're doing and want to quit? People are people sometimes and want to help. What's the sense in quitting before you try to fix anything?
Re:The end of the pandemic is near on Wednesday May 26, 2021 @11:24AM (#27291739)
Herd immunity is easier when 1/3 of the herd died from the disease. But they also did figure out quarantines eventually. "Quarantine" comes from the 40 day waiting period imposed on ships as a result of the black plague.
Re:Product placements may soon be added to classic films on Wednesday May 26, 2021 @11:21AM (#27291693)
Movie studios are conspiring to remove any last bit of guilt I had about pirating.
Re:HIV mRNA Vaccines-Progress and Future Paths on Tuesday May 25, 2021 @05:05AM (#27274583)
With global HIV deaths in hundreds of thousands each year, but less evenly distributed and more stigmatized, will this vaccine be given emergency authorization as well, or is it likely to go through the full 10 year process?
I tried that with my 10 year old and it wasn’t very fun or instructive. It teaches them about loops and functions, but it’s a lot easier to just brute force the mazes and there’s no incentive not to.
I don't even know what I use. It probably changes in different repositories. I've never cared enough to check or set it one way or the other, and definitely don't care enough to have a 20 minute meeting with my team to decide.
Re:Lasting immunity found after recovery from Covid-19 on Wednesday May 12, 2021 @12:28AM (#27126583)
What’s the current understanding of the astronomical infection rate in Manaus, Brazil?

Awhile ago scientists were worried it was due to reinfection.

Re:Workplace Wellbeing Is a Scam? on Tuesday May 11, 2021 @08:52AM (#27117457)
I want to be allowed to do my work and then I want to go home. I can’t be weller than that.
Re:Italian towns will pay you to work remotely on Monday May 10, 2021 @01:18AM (#27102963)
Can you do this right now with the pandemic? I’d absolutely take my family for a summer in Italy.
Dogecoin will lead to a campaign of forced starvation and genocide?
Not completely related, but I also briefly consulted at Monasanto in an entire department that seemed composed of consultants hired to build something from scratch and ignore the normal bureaucracy.

It was fun because we were hired to do things that in house employees had failed to do for whatever reason, so when I built the little dashboard I was hired for, everyone was so amazed. I just completed the job I was given, but to them I was a superstar. Consulting can be fun like that.

Re:How Cities Will Fossilise on Thursday May 06, 2021 @11:59AM (#27065215)
Angkor Wat is not nearly as old as your Indian examples. It's similar age to Notre Dame cathedral. The main temple complex is the best preserved building in the area with some others that I think came later less well preserved. There are many many smaller temples very poorly preserved. As for a "city" of Angkor, it's now Siem Reap and there isn't much of the ancient city within the modern city.
Re:LiveLeak shuts down after 15 years online on Thursday May 06, 2021 @06:23AM (#27061206)
Speaking as someone who’s parents when waited to get divorced until I went to college, I think I would have been less messed up if they’d been honest and mature enough to get divorced when they’d wanted to.
Re:SpaceX's Starlink Failing to Meet Expectations on Thursday May 06, 2021 @02:40AM (#27059881)
Isn't the expectation at this point literally, "better than nothing"?
Re:The most effective malaria vaccine yet discovered on Friday April 23, 2021 @06:01PM (#26919703)
This is something that has confused me for a long time. America definitely has mosquitoes (I’m from Washington, DC). How are there mosquitoes but no malaria?

Truly everything old is new again.
Re:Spotify is killing the open podcast ecosystem (2020) on Tuesday April 20, 2021 @08:39PM (#26883954)
I only use Spotify because the Last Podcast Network went exclusive.
Why would a company ever default if it’s stock price can’t go down. Couldn’t it just sell more stock to cover it’s debts?
Re:The Ambiguous Utopia of Iain M. Banks (2009) on Monday March 29, 2021 @12:13AM (#26617641)
I liked the first one, but couldn't finish The Player of Games. The title was a little too accurate (at least for as far as I got) and imaginary boardgame play-by-plays are not so interesting for me.
XP was notoriously slow to start.
Re:Ask HN: Digital Nomads: What's Your Setup? on Thursday March 25, 2021 @07:17AM (#26578796)
Works well enough that I use it everyday. I think it's less straining because you can move your monitors far away in visual space, so even though you are looking at a screen an inch away, your eyes are focused as if looking at a giant screen much further.
Re:Ask HN: Digital Nomads: What's Your Setup? on Wednesday March 24, 2021 @01:02PM (#26569958)
ImmersedVR and an Oculus Quest 2. Up to five monitors right on your face.
A little extra kick during staging for Rocketlab :)
Re:Why is the DOS path character "\"? (2005) on Saturday February 27, 2021 @10:20AM (#26285365)
But there isn’t another character that anyone calls “hashtag”. It’s like if everyone nontech called “:” a “semicolon” only when it’s preceeded by “http”. There is something else called semicolon and its not the thing in the url.
Re:Why is the DOS path character "\"? (2005) on Saturday February 27, 2021 @03:28AM (#26283493)
That's not the same at all. Hash-tag is just a name for that symbol. It's not the original name, but it is a name. "/" is slash! "\" is a backslash! People who do not type windows paths have probably never actually encountered a backslash in their entire lives, but when they see a url they think that the symbol they see all the time in other contexts (/) suddenly has a different name!
Re:Why is the DOS path character "\"? (2005) on Friday February 26, 2021 @06:16AM (#26273608)
Do you correct people when they say “back slash” when reading out a url? When it’s actually a forward slash?

Is there a name for this phenomenon? Everyone knows it’s a slash except when its used for something computery. Then it somehow becomes a backslash.

What the heck did they do in that session?
Why did that happen?
