Re:Ask HN: Do you invest in the stock market? on Thursday March 29, 2012 @09:01AM (#3770869)
Yes, I dipped my toe in recently. Because the market has been a bull over the last few months, I have made money. Yet, I worry that my success gives me false confidence in I know what I'm doing. I also devote time to just watching the numbers. And, like watching twitter, I recognize it's not very healthy or constructive.

My approach is closest to technical analysis, swing trading, and the CANSLIM method: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CANSLIM

Does anyone else question Zynga's growth model? http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2012/03/21/welcome-to-...
Re:Notifications are Evil on Monday February 20, 2012 @12:39PM (#3613102)
For iPhone users, all app notifications can be changed, except sadly for the App Store. For me, the only pesky red badge that remains on my screen is that of the App Store. And the fact that a few of my apps need to be updated is something I don't want to be notified about.

Personally, I think the pendulum will eventually swing back as users get tired and frustrated with all these services vying for their attention.

Re:Clear: doing for To Do lists what Dropbox did for file syncing on Wednesday February 15, 2012 @10:23AM (#3594531)
Some are calling this the future of interfaces. As a designer, I'm curious as to how you would prototype these interactions. Are there tools out there that could do this? Seems to me you need to have out of this world design and development skills to bring this from idea to app.

Has anyone read anything on Zach Klein's cabin in NY? Very curious how he went about designing and building it. http://beaverbrook.com/
Re:How to Build a Portrait with Dice (using Photoshop) on Saturday November 19, 2011 @10:42AM (#3255462)
I used a similar visual concept to produce the following: http://www.behance.net/gallery/Impossible-Triangle/1968627

However, I chose to manually use random numbers so it wasn't exactly quick. I wonder if there's a way I could have hooked Photoshop up to do that.

Poignant. Though it's hard to finish reading some of the longer messages before the stream moves down.
Re:Tired of Being Tired on Sunday October 16, 2011 @09:40AM (#3117301)
"Be less busy. Seriously, we’re too busy these days. Cut back on commitments, put space between things, allow yourself to have a slower pace. Your energy levels will thank you."

I think the key here is not to fill the "space" with directionless Internet/Twitter/Hacker News perusing. Easier said than done.

Itinerant writer talks of living, and dreaming, on $20,000 a year

Sure the economy sucks. But, personally, I'm tired of people complaining about a world they can't control. "We don’t choose the generation we live in." Kudos to the author for following through despite the challenges.

I was just going to comment on that exact quote. Sounds like a rallying cry for the Coddled Generation.

If anything, excellent use of Steve's turtleneck as background texture inspiration.
Re:Why the #AskObama tweet was garbled on screen on Thursday July 07, 2011 @09:48PM (#2741015)
An error like this should not detract from the value Mass Relevance delivers. Clearly an event like this or similar events like the Oscars in which they take part are better, more engaging because of their involvement.

Ask HN: Methods of Self-Discovery

Simply put, I'm eager to learn more about myself. And I'd rather not wait around or aimlessly look. For example, I've recently read a bunch on the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator as well as discussions on introversion. These topics have definitely impacted my approach towards life and work. Are there are any other ideas/frameworks that may clue me in on how to best understand myself? With regards to...

Hmm, I appreciate this list, however Leo has also written about being "goal-free." http://zenhabits.net/no-goal/ Seems a bit conflicting.
Re:How I Use Twitter on Wednesday June 01, 2011 @08:24PM (#2610026)
Early in a Twitter users life, you realize you can't read everything. That's fine. But what's harder to overcome, is not opening up the stream as a means of distraction. Humans' basic foraging tendency makes it so enjoyable to find that little piece of interesting information. Except you do that too often, and you don't actually get anything done.

Ask HN: Free tools for small, remote teams

Recently, I entered into a partnership with a developer in Europe to build a web/mobile application. I'm curious as to what are the best tools available to collaborate and communicate. Currently, we are simply chatting using Gtalk, but there is a need to share code/files. As this is a side project, free is best. Thanks!

Do you mind sharing who you outsourced development to and how you went about finding a developer?

Apple Hopes to Re-enter the Living Room

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/02/apple-hopes-to-re-enter-the-living-room/?hpw

At D8, Steve said the biggest problem with the TV market is dealing with the fragmentation of cable providers across the country. He also said users have too many boxes and interfaces to deal with. I wonder if this supposed re-imagined Apple TV addresses this.
