Re:JavaScript engines zoo – Compare every JavaScript engine on Thursday January 08, 2026 @03:15AM (#46538606)
> Bun.js uses the JavaScriptCore engine, which tends to start and perform a little faster than more traditional choices like V8.

Little faster? Like I said, that's not a *main* benefit as it's not why Bun can be 5 to 10x faster than Node.js

A significant part of Google’s business (Ads, YouTube, Workspace) runs inside a browser, so if the web is slow, Google loses money
Bun is faster because it implements pretty much everything natively and just exposes them in JS, not because it uses JSCore

I believe long term, V8 will become the undisputed champ again as Google has a lot more incentive than Apple to make the fastest engine, but this is just a wild guess of mine, and I'm biased being a Node.js Collaborator

I've been hearing for a while that JSCore has a more elegant internal architecture than V8, and seeing the V8 team make big architectural changes as we speak seems to support it [1], but like I said, hopefully they will pay off long term

You can see when JIT is disabled, the upcoming Static Hermes (Hermes V1) engine from Meta, built specifically for React Native, outperforms both V8 and JSCore on Apple Silicon

It'll be interesting to see how much it will affect React Native apps as it gets more and more optimized for this use case

Re:Kagi Search API on Tuesday December 03, 2024 @09:18AM (#42306270)
I wonder how it compares to Brave Search API:

https://brave.com/search/api/

Brave has complete search independence and has been doing this for a while, but I hear Kagi has great results, but at the same time I'm perfectly happy with Brave

Would be cool to hear from people who've tried both

Re:Fly.io outage (restoration in progress) on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @07:12AM (#42244995)
DigitalOcean has been doing this for years, and their value proposition is unmatched IMO

For $5 you get:

Latest gen CPUs and RAM

HTTPS

DDoS protection

Cloudflare CDN

Autoscale

Competent support

I'd say the best part is the predictable monthly prices

And while most people probably don't care, they are an established public company, so there is more chance they will exist in 10 years

Re:Two Upstart Search Engines Are Teaming Up to Take on Google on Wednesday November 13, 2024 @04:57AM (#42124593)
Brave Search ONLY uses their own index and the results are really good! I highly recommend it.

Why do you think they are BS? You say it raised legitimate questions about their non-profit status and lack of non-profit related activity.
Re:Teen GTA VI hacker sentenced to life in a secure hospital on Thursday December 21, 2023 @03:21PM (#38726319)
"Kurtaj leaked 90 videos of GTA VI gameplay footage last September while out on bail for hacking Nvidia and British telecom provider BT / EE. Although he stayed at a hotel under police protection during this time, Kurtaj still managed to carry out an attack on Rockstar Games by using the room’s included Amazon Fire Stick and a “newly purchased smart phone, keyboard and mouse,” according to a separate BBC report. Kurtaj was arrested for the final time following the incident."
Re:Ship Shape on Monday November 13, 2023 @10:02AM (#38250936)
Agreed, it really works too well for how simple it is!

We implemented it in ES6 as part of a uni project if anyone's interested: https://github.com/gurgunday/onedollar-unistroke-es6

Re:DDoS Protection – free robust defense for your apps on Thursday September 28, 2023 @09:07AM (#37689100)
It was initially announced as a paid feature — in fact, the docs still have a pricing section: https://docs.digitalocean.com/products/networking/ddos/detai...

Now, seems like they've decided to make it completely free and on by default

Good news for customers

This is opt-in, and a rather hard-to-mistakenly-enable kind of opt-in that I personally think is consistent with their great™ privacy by default stance

Brave offers a simple deal: if you believe or have audited their technical claims, you give them fully anonymized snippets of URLs and web pages, and they improve their search index for everyone

UPDATE: They thankfully resolved our issue. We are grateful for Edwin's help.

I will make another post detailing what I've learned during this time.

Support for Solana and Ethereum NFTs are being added.

Thanks for the answer — appreciated. We are currently looking at alternatives.

Tell HN: Considering legal action against Stripe

Like many others, they just permanently damaged our platform by closing our account without notice. It's plain sad considering how much we've worked on it — for more than 2 years as a team of 2 college students.Despite seeing these kinds of posts on HN every week, we mistakingly thought taking extra care of our account and forming our company under Stripe Atlas would at least help us survive...
