Like the car you want to buy. Suddenly you start seeing it everywhere. Hopefully that's what it is.

I have encountered ads on YouTube that closely match what I think I am only asking on ChatGPT.For example, just today I asked ChatGPT if I am speaking too much and an hr or so later I see a sponsored video on YouTube about exposing your weakness by speaking too much.Is there a direct link between the two, am I hallucinating or it's a divine intervention?I am on FF on Linux and I have ChatGPT...

Don't be misled by my having an a/c here. I am yet another accidental generalist. Survived 20+ years in tech doing a little bit of everything.

Loved everything except the controls. I must be the only one who found it impossible to navigate.
Thanks, I'll get one in the next upgrade.

I've upgraded to a 27" monitor but I still struggle switching between windows. Tmux helps but only when I am inside the terminal. When I work with 3 or more windows for a single task e.g. a terminal, a web page, and a database viewer, the juggling resumes. Is there a more organized way of doing it? Do I need a still larger monitor?
This advice is solid gold. I declined many interviews when I was at the top of my game for silly-in-hindsight reasons such as I have just joined, I am happy here etc. Have always regretted it ever since.
Thanks! I have one for the time being and I wish you good luck with your work. Best
In early 40's with outdated skills, I am in the same boat except a physical disability. While development roles have gone out of reach now, I have been able to find QA, documentation, support, generalist roles at a non-profit, academia, and an early stage startup in that order. Some employers looking for my outdated skills (Perl scripting) also showed interest, so you might want to explore that. LinkedIn etc never worked for me. My resume generated a lot more interest via HN's monthly threads. Good luck!
Yes, the intuition was key for me. So many of the problems could be solved with the simple box model.
Statistics by Freedman, Pisani and Purves. Don't know if I got better but loved the real world examples and cartoons. Does not have too many pre-requisites. Each section presents a tiny concept which is followed by plenty of exercises that have answers at the end. The furthest I got in a book in recent days, Math or not.
> I wonder if getting life goals done could be as simple as carving out large blocks of time where you aren't allowed to work on them.
Does 'them' in the end mean 'life goals'?
It is heartening to see folks concerned about being lightweight. I keep running out of space on my 32GB Debian 9 VM because every time I cargo build or npm install I feel like I am downloading all of the internet and generating more of it locally. And then docker build creates a few "diff-only" container images that need another 32GB of attached storage of their own.

BTW what's wrong with this? Honest question!
I think he also has a way of writing that makes him look like he doesn't know how to. Will look forward to that post. For now I'll just go back to the second or maybe third reading of his post.
> have long-term, sustainable arrangements with only one or two clients, and they don’t run ads or accept any new clients. This can be the holy grail!
Great writing and plenty of consulting advice in the article. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Your reply was helpful in giving the background although the background itself wasn't so helpful. Just to be sure, is the sole purpose of these articles to suggest why (and not how) to improve productivity? I think I am looking for the secret to 10x productivity which is still hidden somewhere inside those articles. Or is it?
As this seems to be about productivity from a respected person, I want to make sure I get the important ideas and I have tried. Is there a context in which this article must be read? Is it a commentary to another? Neither its introduction nor its conclusion seems to capture all of its ideas it is about. I know it is not meant to be readable but I'll appreciate any help.
Would you like to edit for formatting, just in case the searchers miss it.
And I outside the terminal!
Am I the only one who is having to work hard to understand the article?

Hi HN, I have been sloooooow to pick up new tech skills (ML/KJ/IH) by allocating an hour or two daily for reading books and solving problems. Often that hour gets missed or the interest wanes after a few days. On the other hand I have had occasional successes in moving a routine coding task forward by staying put for a full day or two. But the latter was possible because it was part of my day...
